Qatar 95 takes the win! 96 out again.... Here's a report from Alan Campbell:
They started all eleven boats, most finished and there was actually some exciting racing. Qatar 95 won with Victory 1 and 7 rounding out the top three. Jotun put on a good show before they lost a prop. They started third, were fifth after the first turn and worked their way up to second behind Qatar 95. They were gaining on them and about 8 seconds behind, when they went out with about 5 laps to go. It would have made an incredible finish if they had closed and were trying to pass on the last couple of laps. When Jotun went out it made a normal finish with no contests toward the end. Steve Curtis was fourth when they went out somewhere in the first half of the race and never threatened for the lead this time.
I did see Tom Abrams and spoke with him a bit. Also spoke to Billy Moore who is flying back with us tomorrow night. . I found Jon and thanked him again. He was a little bummed out about their finish but I told him they put on a great show while they were running. The crew really enjoyed the whole experience; the race, the dry pits and meeting some of the driving crew. We had lunch in the Jotun hospitality tent . Good seats and the announcer was actually better this time. The Maritimo boat spun out just at the end of the S turns and sustained some fiberglass damage. We saw the spin and saw the boat afterward on the trailer. Fortunately they kept it right side up. With just that rudder in the water they may be more susceptible to spinning. That was the only accident of the day. Water was about the same as last week but they decided not to do the long laps to save some wear and tear on the boats. Still 21 laps and it took about one hour. Weather was excellent.
