Racing down-under!!!

Looks like I'm heading over to the Australia in March to help out the Global Racing team. They bought the first Dirty Duck CatLight MTI and I'm going over to give them a hand on some setup and whatever else they may need.
I'm really excited to see how they race in other countries and try to make some new friends that share the same passion as all of us here in the states. There is also talk of these guys coming over here for a race or two. Should be fun and I'm really looking forward to the experence.

I'll do what I can for updates. I'm going to take my video camera for the helicopter ride over the race on Sunday so I'll try to get some clips on sometime.

Enjoy your stay when you come down! Are you only going to the Victoria races in March or are you going to travel?
Check out Australian Offshore Powerboat Club website ( http://www.aopc.com.au/ ) for some pics of our rides 'Down Under' there's even a member from OSO in a few of those pics in his Eliminator - "Think Fast." (not me!)

Good luck!

I am going to the Geelong, Vic race the 7th & 8th of March. Then I am going up to Arundel by Brisbane until the 13th. I am helping out the Global Racing guys and have been speaking with Mark Gilbert for the past month and he seems like a pretty cool guy. :ernaehrung004: I'm staying with him in Arundel until I come home.
I will have to come find you guys and say hello and check out Bryan's old boat. :boat: I can't wait to be in Australia and do my part in bringing the world of Offshore Racing together.

olmo40 02-24-2009 04:54 PM

The world is a small place ,Arundel is on the Gold Coast and one of the nicest places on earth .

I am there for 3 months till the 14th of June staying with a mate .

Will you be at the Geelong race?

olmo40 02-25-2009 06:13 PM

No wont get to Geelong ,it is a fair way from where i will be on the Gold Coast .Im over as i own part of a business there, not boating related.
We are going to sort my mates Bullet out with a few tricky bits ,plus he owns a 30ft cat ,so i will be boating just for fun .

Ghostrider 02-25-2009 09:48 PM

I think RedBellies racing runs out of the Gold Coast don't they?

olmo40 02-26-2009 01:51 AM

I was looking on the net on those Blade boats,Look pretty cool any feed back??

CrazyBoatTower 03-02-2009 10:37 PM

The big day is tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to the flight, but the rest of the time it should be a great time. I'll do what I can to promote US offshore racing while I'm there.

bryanh 03-03-2009 08:21 AM

Be careful and have fun, when is your scheduled return date?

FunHome 03-03-2009 10:27 AM

Red Bellies ran out of Port Stephens. They aren't running this year though. Last year, they ran a yellow (of course) 32 Victory rig.

The boat you mention sounds like Blade.

olmo40 03-04-2009 05:12 PM

Hey Pete ,

It was the boat in your link above , yes it is a blade ,Im on hoildays and will correct my statement, it wasnt last week but the weekend before ,time sort of slips away .What is a Blade ? It was running in the nerang river on the Gold Coast.

pete60 03-05-2009 06:24 AM

Olmo
Blades are made on the Gold Coast. The boat is based on a 32ft hull developed here a few years ago by Innovation Marine, which originally ran with triple Mercs. The boat has been modified for offshore work. There are now 2 of them racing here.

FunHome 03-05-2009 10:33 AM

I got this from Jeff this morning!!!

Just thought I'd drop a line and let you know I made it to australia today. I'll keep you posted on the events of the week. today we worked on the boat, got the motors in and put the gimbals back together with the new Imco Gimbal rings that were dropped off at the LAX airport for me to bring. Tomorrow we should get the drives on and be on our way to Geelong around 2.

So far they have just flushed straight down the hole, no spinning. They do have 2 flush buttons on the toilets, one that is a half flush and one that's a full one.

CrazyBoatTower 03-07-2009 03:31 PM

So I haven't done a great job of keeping everyone posted so I thought I'd try to get everyone caught up. The boys at Global Racing are top notch and the team is very professional. Mark has been racing for 15 years or so but only has 3 races with the new cat light boat. There is a lot of potential in the boat. With some seat time and a big weekend of testing all the setups that they can put together, they will be very tough to beat. I think the best thing they've got going on is, when they get tired of the 525 class (which they are very competitive in) they can get the 850's like we did and run with the Maritimo boats with 1075's and Lambo's and be competitive in that class. Today is the big race so I'll try to get the results posted tonight. The big downside to racing over here is they only get 1 hour of testing on saturday and it's not even on the full course. It's hard to pick a good setup.

CrazyBoatTower 03-08-2009 08:40 AM

After a day of racing and a few cocktails, I'd have to say racing here is very similar to racing back home. The few differences would have to be, only an hour of testing on Sat., a few less boats in the race, only one race, not three, and the start of the race is a bit different. Other than that it's really the same. Everyone is very friendly and willing to help in any way. The Offshore family is the same, if not stronger here. I was welcomed with open arms and have enjoyed every minute since I've been here. I'd like to thank the Gilbert family for having me and would like to give a big congrats to the Australian powerboat association for putting together a beautiful show. Every racer would appreciate the effort of the organization and the caliber of boats at the race.
With that said, Global racing finished 3rd over all in Class 1. They have not setup a 525 class so they run with the equivalent of unlimited to us. Finishing 3rd overall is a great finish and beating the 3 other 525 boats buy quite a length is very exciting for the team. Global racing was only beat by Maritimo's unbelievable lambo boat and the Acme boat. I've had an awesome time and can't wait to watch another race here in Australia.

Bryan,
The old racing frenzy ran a great race and finished first!!! The old boat looks great and I have pics to prove it. I'll post them when I get home.

mat h 03-16-2009 04:38 AM

Are you coming to Newcastle ?
Very tricky course. Real offshore racing out to sea then back up the river mouth then back out to sea.
Try and pick a set up for that !
Thanks for the kind words re "Racing Frenzy" It's unstoppable in the rough and very fast in the flat.
Bryan has been a great help with set up advice.
Doug designs a great boat
We love it.
Come say high in Newcastle. May 2. Hope to meet you this time.
Cheers
Mat and Simon

CrazyBoatTower 03-24-2009 10:39 AM

I think I'm going back for the Townsville race. I wish I could go to Newcastle but I have to work.

bryanh 03-24-2009 10:47 AM

Here's some pics from Australia. They aren't the best, but you'll get the idea. Oh, and Bryan, there are some pics of your old boat.
