Looking for a good P4 boat.

A good buddy is looking to run in P4 in Fla. He seems sold on a canopy 30. But , as he will most likely move up in a few years, I feel he will be stuck with this boat for big money. AS the new generation of svl's are coming out the older ones are worth less and less. My thoughts would be a decent open boat with a wider resale market. Or at the very least he'll be able to take the kids out. What is out there for 27-30' range, turn key , ready to run or near ready race boat. extreme, pantera, phantom, etc. Any older A boats or F1's looking for a home for short $. He wouldn't post this but I'm certain he is reading.

88bullet 05-08-2014 07:08 PM

i heard my old 6 pack race boat can be bought and is in new jersey. pm me if you want his contact info

F1-00 Racing 05-08-2014 11:57 PM

In powerboat swap shop on fb there is a 29 fountain with a 500EFI(formerly known as Xtras in opa prior did race F1) that was converted to a sit down with a back seat, if its who I think it is that your talking about B with me gutting mine, I am sure the parts are there to make him race ready and would be more than willing to help him with the setup, hes only an hour south of me and basically where i will be doing the final testing of the red rocket before I have to figure out how to catch your mangy butt

bwd 05-09-2014 04:22 AM

All I can hope for is he is reading and doing a bit more do diligence. Red wagon you mean. lol . Btw, it should be too hard to catch me as I'm only going 85. I should talk to Smitty and see if he'll bump the class to 90. Just kidding Johnny. don't get your panties in a bunch. :-)

GoFastSonic 05-09-2014 08:16 AM

I think even with the couple new SVL,s coming out that as a class were going to try and keep things as equal as possiable at least in OPA Cant speak for other Orgs.
After racing a numer of years in 5 im looking forward to SVL cant wait to see the TUGIT guys in my rear view mirror

Warm Regards

So does this Lavey actually hold a Kilo record ? with a stock engine ? Was that with the nxt or a bravo ?

The bravo set up was/is the fastest.

I disagree. You don't need the fastest hull out there to run in a bracket class. It has to be steady and strong, good giddyup doesn't hurt either. Personally, while I agree having a lid is safer than being open, I would rather be in a open in p4. Being at the bottom of the food chain on the course ( slowest ) I would rather have the 360 degree if vis to see boats lapping me. AS most will agree in a lid, vis is very limited and cameras can be pricey and far from perfect. Also, all of the most successful p4 boats are open. Some with a fair amount of age too. Aerotech, Extreme, Phantom, Scarab. come to mind.

I guess I shouldve said it would probably be a better 4 boat than a SVL. I have raced against that thing and or watched it run several times, and its a handfull. So maybe a bit better at class 4 speeds as opposed to trying to go 100 to keep up with the doc. I firmly believe the best class 4 boat is a 34' Phantom with 500's in it !!!

I agree with the last part of that. I doubt very much that a svl would make a good class 4 or p3 boat. I have run in both classes and the only time I ever got passed by a svl was if I was laying up when everyone else broke. The fact is when it gets rough the large twin engine boats walk away from the svl with a steady speed through out the course.

DiamondPerformance 05-11-2014 07:15 AM

I have 15 hrs in the boat and it runs nice and straight. The factory did move the strakes around back when it was racing. NXT drive/prop did not help with control.

bwd 05-11-2014 04:02 PM

BTW, this is the aggravating thing about racing these days, so as there is no confusion, I was asking about a good open p4 boat( 80mph bracket, 30' and under ) in sbi. Class 4 in opa is 85 0ver 30. P3 in sbi is 90 or 95 ( depending who whines the most to get what they want) over 30'.

Bilgerat 05-11-2014 11:33 PM

yeah guess i missed the initial point of the first post p4 in sbi. When I ran p4 in sbi it was still open to twin engine boats. and for that the Saber here local would be a good bet. However that same boat or one like it with a single would also be a good choice for single engine class 4 sbi rules.

Nice boat, Pantera 28 too.

MissGeicoRacing 05-12-2014 07:48 AM

30 Sutphen with twins, it would make a nice P4 and still take the kids out with the 5 man bolster.

Too funny! Really bro? read post # 18.. And yes p4 did use to allow twin engines over 30 feet but not for a few years.

Think they were just trying to help? I have raced many years with all the Geico guys and have never thought they looked down on anyone?

I'll correct it.

Bilgerat 05-12-2014 11:11 PM

You know Class 4 wasn't so bad when it was twins and singles and svls etc. We raced against all sorts of hulls, and for the most part they were all in there. Love watchin Randy's svl flop around and bark and bite right next to me. Had some good runs against larger twins, and smaller singles, and even an old cat w outboards back in the day. Ahhhh the memories !

MissGeicoRacing 05-13-2014 07:47 AM

BWD, the rules change yearly and I am sorry if I cant keep up with every class, I have never looked down on any race team, I have looked up to many and still do, especially the low budget P class teams because I know first hand how tough it is to go racing on a small budget.

I have a really nice 26 Corsa, that is just a hull I had a nice new aluminum dash made for it and started to try and make an engine hatch, but have since focused efforts onto my Class 7 project. I love the Corsa, Don't know that I could sell it. Well maybe. Need to get one done then refocus on this one.

My guess it was from Hurricane Sandy there was a lot of damage to boats in Long Island.

TBTRAV 05-20-2014 03:01 PM

there are some really nice boats in this thread and appreciate the help because I am also a lurker as I will be throttling for said now boat owner of a very safe canopy boat. I was oblivious of this thread until mid last week and ashamed to even be associated with some of the comments directed towards people who are trying to help.

there has been NO ONE who has helped me out more with my start in racing than Scotty B, from making the calls to get me started in a safe boat, the SVL, to endless hours picking his brain on ideas, to letting us (Maz & I) pit with them several times, press releases etc.. Scotty B, thank you my friend and your team, y'all have shown me nothing but friendship and respect.

correct me if I'm wrong but there is no purse or trophy worth getting tossed from a boat with our team of 4 woman 3girls and 1 boy on the beach with us in the water.. it's a no brainer for a day of FUN!!! I understand it's no guarantee on safety but i'll take it..

correct me if I'm wrong but raising the X dimension and running P3 (although not competitive) is an opportunity to learn the characteristics of our boat as if we were racing SV without paying double the entry fee to race SV?

I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but not the dullest either , and IMO we got the safest and best platform to start our team and have some fun!

whether knowing the specs and rules or not, thanks for the input and ideas folks,Truly sorry some of you got bashed for trying to help in an ever changing world of offshore politics and rules. For the sake of making myself sound like a Moron any further i'll log off OSO and forget my password again, and those that ask for help and advice then abuse the helpers might want to consider doing the same.

sorry again to be indirectly associated with this thread

Sincerely

Travis Lofland

I was merely looking out for a friends interest and wallet. If that's a bad thing, so be it! As far as bad mouthing Scotty B that was not intentional and after realizing that I was wrong I corrected it as good as possible.
As for my friend looking for a boat, I never mentioned a name of any boat or driver and tried to keep it as vague as possible. Travis you know me. not well obviously but we've drank together and hung out. We share the same friends. Do you really think I started this thread to be destructive or mean in someway? And seeing how you are such good friends with Scotty, maybe he has told you I'm an A- hole. In which case the very next time I see him I have no issue walking up to him, whom I have never met and offer my apologies and explain why I said what I said and tried to retract it as best as possible with out erasing the tread. He either accept or not. And btw, At the time of putting this question out there I had no idea that you were going to drive with him as He did not say. He's been wanting to buy a boat for a year now, I figured he would work it out. So in my opinion, you are not associated with this thread at all!!!!!!

I fully understand the defensive position. I was wrong to say what I did and tried to rectify it, but typing doesn't take it back. That last meeting really did hurt. Be well and good luck. B.

To all involved in this thread and helping me find a new to me race boat thank you!!!! BW got me started and I will always be grateful for that! He started this thread to help me find a boat and that was cool of him. Travis is also my friend and has been helping me find a boat and build our team. Scotty b has always been cool to be around and has never been "too cool". So this thread is over because all you guys are good people and were just trying to help my family and i out. THANK YOU!
