Sbi World Championship Boycott

This is a very sad day. I am not posting this thread to start any controversy. This is not a rumor, it's a fact. The entire class of Superboat limited (SBI) other the Bank Beaters decided to not participate in the New Orleans world championship. This is due to the way John Carbonell handled the situation in New York with Bankbeaters cheating. It has been over 7 weeks since the New York race and there is still no final ruling as to the National Championship. Mr. Carbonell has had every oppertunity to reverse his decision to DQ 3 of the boats for minor infractions which should have only been punishable by a minimal fine ($100) not a Disqualification. This was done to assure Doug Kelly of Bank Beaters the National Championship even after being caught cheating. Being a sponsor, I know I feel all the time and money spent by myself and all of the honest teams in the has been a total waste. Everyone races with the hope to be fortunate enough to hold the title of National or World Champion. This was taken from everyone. This is such a shame. I fell terrible for the teams involved Zipp Express, Lube Jobs, Fastboats.com, and Emotion. These guys have worked very hard in vain. If anyone has any questions regarding this they can be posted here and they will be answered or they could be directed directly to the teams listed above.

Not to worry Mike, I have a tractor trailer load of popcorn that just came in from the Bahamas. I can have it brought right to your door. Oh, wait a minute, what's that? Maybe I can't. Something about the port of Miami, a threatening letter, a bill not paid and some boats?:p

Ron P 10-30-2002 09:47 AM

Have fun in Key West.

Sydwayz 10-30-2002 10:06 AM

Anyone see that movie; "Wierd Science," I think, where the house blew up from popcorn and a laser? I think we need another batch.

mr_velocity 10-30-2002 10:11 AM

Wierd Science was the smokin shower scene with Kelly LeBrock. You're thinking of "Real Genius".

Boat Girl 10-30-2002 10:23 AM

Fast Fountain- I would like to ask you something...reverse the situation here, put yourself in John Carbonell's shoes, how would you handle the situation, now remember no bias here, you cant just say you would side with Zipp and Larry and your other friends, really think about the situation, dont forget to take into account being screamed at and being called every four letter word in the book, not to mention the daily phone calls, and the threat of a lawsuit, and dont forget you still have to try and do business and get the Worlds underway...You keep saying that SBI is handeling this so poorly, well how would you handle it...why dont you try being part of a solution rather than the problem...

Fast Shafts 10-30-2002 10:30 AM

sounds like this post deserves Xtra Butter...........:p

SummerObsession 10-30-2002 10:37 AM

You GO boat girl!!
Excellent point.

SLINGSHOT 10-30-2002 10:37 AM

DID THEY FOLLOW THE RULE BOOK? NO I DIDNT THINK THEY DID!, RULES ARE RULES THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE MADE UP AS THEY GO.....THATS WHAT THEY ARE THERE FOR.

this is the same point i brought up regarding other racing issues. we all love the sport no matter which organization. if everyone criticises and no one help solve the problems, then we all lose. solutions and help would be better than criticism.

THIS is how it should have been handled...

Boycotts don't happen without reason. This does not appear to be one sore sport...Many are involved.

Sydwayz 10-30-2002 10:52 AM

Thanks Mr. V!

SLINGSHOT 10-30-2002 10:56 AM

HOW CAN OTHERS HELP....ITS MR CARBONELL'S CALL.....RIGHT?

Pat D. 10-30-2002 10:57 AM

FastFountain.......
That is truly sad news. It's a shame. I feel terrible.

I hadn't heard any of this so appreciate your post even though it might look like your trying to start a controversy.
Your approach to good reporting is not going unnoticed.

I still have to go, even though there will be such a void with those boats missing, (fact, not rumor right?) we'll still try to have a race........
and if you decide to spend a little more money and attend that race, would you look me up in the registration tent any day from 9 to 5? I have something for you

Shane 10-30-2002 11:39 AM

Boat Girl,

I don't usually post telling sanctioning bodies how to handle their business. This is pretty cut and dry. IF Bank Busters WAS ILLIEGAL (as they were apparently found to be) penalize them AS PER THE RULE BOOK! IF there were INFRACTIONS by other teams (as there were apparently found to be), penalize them AS PER THE RULE BOOK! That is why there is a rule book and EVERY RACING MEMBER has one. If selecting a National Champion is too much work when combined with getting the World's organized then Mr. Carbonell needs more staff and needs to pay them. Just like any other business does. If he cannot meet the demands of his customers (The Racers) they will go elsewhere. Unfortunately, right now that would be the port of Miami. There is no second guessing here. SBI has always been known to have its rules written on loose leaf paper. It was that way as far back as I can remember. It has been spoke about here for over a year and if memory serves me correctly, SBI was categorized as being a "more fun place to race". If John C. will not enforce his rules on the spot, or upon reciept of factual information from the testing facility, then he assumes the risk of losing competitors. If he does not enforce the rules as per the rule book, tehn why have any rule book at all?

All that you say is correct. Te screaming, the threats of a law suit as well as 4 letter words all happened. But Why? THE RULES WERE NOT FOLLOWED. ANY RACER REFUSING AN INSPECTION IS IMMEDIATLY DQ'ED. PERIOD. Not weeks later! also DQ'ing every other boat except 1 to keep THE CHEATER as the national points champion. Carbonell should have given out the APPROPRIATE penealtys.

Bank Beaters: Cheated DQ him

Fastboats.com: Didn't sign paperwork pryor to testing. $100 fine 60 second penealty. NOT DQ

Zipp Express: Poor sportsman like conduct. Only after 6 hours of trying to convince Carbonell to accept the protest, 6 hours of trying to get an inspection done on Bank Beater, 6 hours of being ignored by an organisation Dan Fransis has supported for 2 years, spent countless thousands of dollars with, worked very hard to get racers to join the class did Dan loose his temper with Doug Kelly and Carbonell. It never, ever should have gotten to that point. But if Carbonell thinks a DQ is in order there fine.

Emotion: A rookie racer, first race ever, tested his boat the day before the race, before even sure he was going to race due to problems with the boats hull gets DQ"ED for driving his boat in the Hudson without signing in. John should be ashamed of this DQ. If anything a $100 fine and 60 second penalty. It actually should have ben assest at time of paying his entry fee since it happened prior. NOT over 2 weeks later. This is a guy that never raced, never saw a race packet or rules AND it was before he even knew he was going to race.

This was handled very poorly. It was an obvious attempt to keep The convicted Cheater Bank Beaters as the National champion.

How would you have handled it if you were robbed of your money, time, possible race win, possible national title, passion for thesport you love?

Boat Girl, I want you to know I like John, I like SBI. This thing is a real shame. If I was to put myself in Carbonells shoes, I would have taken control of the situation and dealt with the situation as per the rule book.

This forum was designed for the racers and their Sanctioning bodies to discuss their issues. Please refrain from adding your .02 if it does not pertain to you, they are dealing with enough without the added instigating.

REMEMBER: IF YOU ARE NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION, THEN YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

kaama,

it was moved to this forum by OSO. this is where they would like racing topics discussed.

Boycott a race? Sounds like a silly way to deal with it but then again, I raced F2 for several years for the fun of it.
We knew "things" went on with other boats but did we cry & carry on? No, we went racing.

chaser 10-30-2002 02:33 PM

Ron That is real class.
Ron P. Has a lot of class!! It's all low class, just about as low as you can get.

Boycotting Races is silly. Besides, everyone I know is racing the SBI Worlds. Last year in the Keys was great and I hope that this race in N.O. will be a great time! Fast Fountain=ZIP EXPRESS, remember that.

Dredgeking 10-30-2002 08:12 PM

maximus, no it wasn't. just don't stir the pot too fast;)

peace, i was sad when they quit racing in NOLA. i expect copeland to host an excellent event.

Shane 10-31-2002 09:14 AM

Funny, we haven't heard back from Boat Girl...Hmmmmmm....Maybe in 2 weeks.:p

Boat Girl 10-31-2002 11:49 AM

Shane- I am here, sorry I live in sunny Florida and I dont shut myself in with my computer, I have a life...LOL...

Fast Fountain- Thank you for responding...At least I know this is not personal...I think...As for this being and SBI decision, yes it is, and maybe they havent reached one yet because of possible legal proceedings, they would be foolish to comment until any possible legal matters are cleared up...I'm not sure about your time line, but I was there when word of a protest was mentioned to the inspector, that was no more than 20 mins after the finish of the race and he went straight away to the dry pits...When I was leaving the awards ceremony, I noticed the inspection well underway and a couple of team members from other teams climbing on Bank Beaters boat...That should not be allowed either, only the team being inspected and SBI staff should be on the boat, but whatever, and that was maybe only 3-3 1/2 hours after the race was finished...but that is really not the point and our opinions are just that, Just like the APBA boat situation, let the powers that be and the parties involved handle it...

Slingshot- Have read the SBI rulebook...if you would like to read it you can download it from the SBI website, and the part about protests is under General Competition Rules, I believe it is 4.6 on or about page 12...give or take...

Hi Boat girl. Actually the protest was drawn up at about 2:45. It was not accepted. It was actually 7:45 when things got ugly. For 5 hours we tried to get the "Rules" inforced. Only after Dan francis showed his frustration and Doug Kelly left the race site were the EFI boxes confiscated. Unfortunatlly, I will not see you in New Orleans, I won't be there since I won't have anyone to race against in my class. I am very disapointed. The one thing about our class that is so unusual is we are all so close. Even though we are competitors we are all friends. Until the New York race I can't tell you one instance that anyone in our class ever argued with each other. I'm not saying I won't be racing "somewhere" next season but I have a hard time imagining it will be as anything like the class we had the past 2 years.

Agitator 11-01-2002 09:26 AM

What about Key West?

Its to bad when we have to have cheaters, who aren't good enough to win legally, ruin this sport. We also need leadership that will inforce and follow the rules AS PER RULE BOOK. Come on down to Key west instead and you can race against me, I DON'T CHEAT. Ask Rick Felsen about his $500 I partied on. ;)
