SBI P-Class debochel

I heard from a very good sourse that a P5 racer was complaining that a 80+mph Bat Boat and a twin engine super fast 38' Fountain ran in SBI's P5 class in New Orleans! This racer in his 2000 Warlock with a 502 mag said these boats hung back until the last lap and blew by him at 80+mph speeds thus taking the win he deserved at the SBI Worlds!

It's nice to know SBI is NOT enforcing the rules and class they stole from APBA-Offshore!
Mike

raynman 11-10-2002 07:39 AM

Mike,

As I recall the Kilo record for APBA E class was about 75 mph.
That Warlock would have been an E class boat and may also
have been capable of exceeding 69 mph. P class in either
organization will never be fair until the rules are enforced.
Meanwhile the guys who run in the proper class take it on the
chin. When a boat "averages" close to the top speed of their class
it has to be capable of substantially higher speeds.

LubeJobs42 11-10-2002 12:00 PM

I am shocked the rules are not being upheld. This is so unlike Carbonell to favor a racer. Was there a protest filed and an inspection requested? I am interested to see if this is going anywhere since us Supercat light guys still have our issue with SBI which is about to come to a head.

raynman 11-10-2002 12:28 PM

And as always the guys who travel hundreds of miles, pay their fees and expenses, and enter the proper class are the ones who get screwed.

Just Browsing 11-11-2002 12:34 AM

You heard wrong!

First, the Bat Boat in question is definitely NOT an 80 mph + boat. It is powered by a 315 hp Volvo, which is identical to the Bat Boat which set the Kilo record in Cleveland (perfectly calm water) at a speed of 71.358 mph. Check the APBA website under kilo records for confirmation.

Secondly, I drove that boat on Thursday, and we let every lap, so we did not have to pass anyone. There were, however, two boats that "broke out" of the 60 - 69 mph AVERAGE LAP SPEED (different from APBA rules, per John Carbonell himself), but it was determined that there was some confusion as to whether or not it was individual lap speed, or average speed for the entire race. Can you guess which 2 boats were confused on this issue?

Although our results (P5-2 Bat Boat) are not yet posted on the SBI website, due to an oversight, as I am told, when they are, you will see that our fastest lap for the 2 races was 67 mph average speed.

We were in the correct class, given that SBI uses average lap speed, and NOT top speed. Pump It, is the Warlock that you are referring to, and they told me today that the fastest they saw on their GPS (we don't even use a speedo) was 71 mph.

We won the National Championship playing by the rules that were laid out by SBI. I'm not say that I agree with them necessarily, and I definitely think a couple of boats should have moved up to P4 at least, but that is not for me to say.

Please get your facts straight before you accuse someone of cheating, especially when the information is second or third hand!

Pete B 11-11-2002 12:22 PM

hey bobby shouldnt your sbi title be 2002 world champion??
how did you uys do at the second race??

Just Browsing 11-11-2002 12:44 PM

Hey Pete:

Not for the Divisional Classes. Apparently there is no National Points race for the P classes, so the SBI Worlds race determines the National Championship for the divisionals.

We came in 2nd on Sunday, finishing 7 seconds behind "For $um Reason". We led the 1st two laps, but they ran us down, passed us, then set their speed just about 1/2 mph faster than we were able to go. The lap times were way down, so I suspect that the mileage was off on the course vs. what SBI plugged into the computer. Anyway, we simply couldn't catch them, as they can go 80+ mph. We knew they had come in 3rd on Thursday, so we just followed them for the final few laps and were able to win the Championship with 504 points for 1st on Thursday, and 454 points for second on Sunday. I think P5 was the biggest class there, with 7 boats answering roll call on Thursday, and 6 on Sunday. (Boss moved up to P3 where there was only 1 other boat).

Pete B 11-11-2002 01:18 PM

what was the water conditions like??

Pete B 11-11-2002 01:18 PM

are you ready for some frequent flier miles in KW?? it can be real big there!!

Just Browsing 11-11-2002 01:34 PM

Choppy -- maybe 2 - 3 footers at one end

Yes, I'm ready. I'd prefer big water to the smooth. I was hoping that the wind would kick up some nice water like it did on Wednesday when the first race was postponed. . . that way we wouldn't have to worry about the sandbaggers -- just real racing.

I'll be bringing a large bottle of Advil to Key West, after all I have heard about it, the water must be big all the time down there.

Interestingly enough at the SBI driver's meeting Sunday morning, people were expressing concern over boat wakes created by a Coast Guard patrol boat, and the helicopter pilot apoligized for the trouble that the hovering copters were causing the smaller boats with their prop wash.

BJM 11-11-2002 02:57 PM

Bobby

Advil won't help. Bring PERCOSET!----and bring some for me.

Just Browsing 11-11-2002 03:36 PM

Gulp!

Stop that kind of talk, or you'll scare me out of coming down there!

Offshore Addiction 11-12-2002 06:47 AM

how did the pump it boat do sunday?

Just Browsing 11-12-2002 08:39 AM

3rd place

I think they were 4th on Thursday, and 3rd on Sunday, giving them 3rd place for the overall National Championship.

Met Joey D. after the race on Sunday -- he is a great guy, and from what I understand, supported SBI all year long. He should be congratulated!

Fever Mike:

Fair enough, you did say that you "heard it".

I just get frustrated when I hear someone complain that they would have won it all, if it weren't for us "taking the win [they] deserved", when we simply beat them straight up.

PUMPIT 11-13-2002 07:28 PM

Hey Everyone: Hats off to One Design in N.O. They ran a great race both days and ran within the rules of the class!!! Hopefully next year we'll have a chance to race you again, in APBA, we'll not run SBI again!!!!!!! We've been burnt in both organizations, but at least APBA will follow the rule book!! Hope you guys are not mad at us we didn't mention you at all aside from the fact in the rule book about being in 3 races to qualify. Congrats, Eddie @ Joey D

Just Browsing 11-13-2002 08:25 PM

Hey Pump It:

No hard feelings at all!

I can understand how frustrating it must be to support an organization all year like you did, and have them pull the rug out from under you (in more ways than one) at the last minute.

If you raced in ANY APBA races this year, I think you can still come to Key West and have another go at it.

You are right about one thing for sure, you can count on the APBA to enforce the rules "by the book". At least that way you know what to expect.

Congratulations on your wins this year, and your 3rd at Nationals. I look forward to seeing you next year!

Bobby & Chris Reindl

Ron P 11-14-2002 10:20 AM

How about a first time racer winning in P4. The rule book says that you need at least two starts during the season to be elligable for the crown. Maybe John should read his own rule book every year or two.

Not enforcing the rules will be the downfall of SBI.

Boat Girl 11-14-2002 10:59 AM

Bobby, you are right on the money, hats off to Pump It...Joey and Eddie I really enjoyed watching you guys run all season...Hope to see you back next year...

As for the first time boats, from what I heard, it was decided to waive the requirements since there was no central division race this year for those boats to qualify...

I really think the P classes are great to watch and very exciting, they put on a great show...Hats off to all of the P teams...My .02, these are the classes that are going to help the sport grow...

TYPHOON 11-14-2002 07:40 PM

Smittymarine 11-15-2002 08:34 PM

No, I just have a few ideas I want to run past some of the guys we have raced with, to try and iron out a few of the wrinkles in the system. Then propose some changes to benefit us all. But not without input from all involved. I dont want anyone to go anywhere just yet. Please all check in at [email protected]

PUMPIT 11-19-2002 04:57 PM

Mag27 11-19-2002 07:57 PM

Pump It I thought you two were in K.W.getting to see how a race should run. I had taulked to Mr. C in Deerfield about our S. E. div.championship that we had won in P4. He told me the trophy would be given at the N.O.awards.He also explaind about having to win N.O.to win the nat. title.I knew with the big merlin and my personel prop we had as good a chance as anybody, and a lot more if the lake was flat. But then Kenny had to get into therappy with his arm and that was the end of our year.Got raind out on the poker run with the new boat, put tell this sat.Dave an I took it up to Boka Grand an back on test run, tops out in high 70s not used to a heavy twin yet. TEAM PUMPIT,

FROM THE ENTIRE CREW OF Xtreme Racing

xtremeracingf1 11-23-2002 02:18 PM

NO THANKS I CANT DEAL WITH MIKE...
THINK WE'LL RUN SBI NEXT YEAR AGAIN...
GREAT BONCE OF GUYS AND MUCH BETTER SITE AND COURSES...
BEING BASED IN FL. IT MUCH BETTER FOR US TO RUN SBI S.E.
JOHNS A GOOD GUY AND TRIES HARD AND MUCH EASIER TO TALK TO THEN MIKE A. IN APBA...

Mag27 11-24-2002 01:51 PM

PUMP IT Got to do the poker run yesterday,mn it was fun BUT it ure aint racing. Formula ran great, did 120 miles hard running,I didnt like pushing that one new engine that hard, but do it with race engines all yhe time and havent had a problem.I was just reading the post above and you might want to think about dealng with old Mike again before you jump. I know I go dq so fast in ST Cloud this year i didnt know what happend. After I told him what to do with apba i thought it might be better to try SBI.And your s.Fl. like we are, with apba we miss miami, frt myers,my own home town, and sarasota to run a bummer like daytona?? I know we can have problems with both org.but think about all extra races in SBI we can ***** about. Some of this is just making FUN but some is the truth.
Think about it. MEL

xtremeracingf1 11-24-2002 08:06 PM

MY PROBLEM WITH MIKE A. IS THAT HE PLAYS BY THE RULES HIS RULES...
HE CHANGES THEM THENEVER HE SEE FIT TO SUIT HIMSELF...
HES SCREW A LOT OF RACERS AND HE IS THE MAIN REASON ALOT OF GOOD TEAMS JUMPED SHIP...
HE KNOW THAT IT TRUE AND HES ADMITTED IT,BUT I DONT THINK HE CAN BE TRUSTED...
I'M NOT SAYING THAT ONE CLUB IS BETTER THEN ANOTHER,THEY BOTH HAVE THERE PROBLEM BUT LIKE I SAID EARLIER SBI SUITS YOU NEED NOW AND LESS PROBLEMS...
I THINK THEY FORGET WITH OUT THE RACER THERE IS NO APBA OR SBI... WE DESERVE MORE RESPECT AND FAIR TREATMENT...
THE PROBLEM IS THAT MIKE IS TRING TO MAKE A BUSSINESS OUT OF IT. THATS HOW THE PROBLEMS START THEN HE DIDNT PAY A FEW OF THE CITY THAT WE RACED IN AND TRIED RULING WITH AN IRON FIST...
