Miss print in the E-Mail from OPA?????

I received an e-mail today with the update on the new rules for P5. Everything looked good, until I read the part about maximum speed 65mph.
I realize this is the "starter" class but was was wrong with 70mph top speed???
I understand having the average lap speed as part of the equation, but whats up with this?????????????
Is there someone out there with a boat that will only go 64mph that's griping???
This is the rule change that makes me UNNNHAPPY!!!

BRUCE SEROFF 01-17-2004 10:24 PM

YOYOYO...Tommy

I read that too . i am assuming

65 mph is max average lap speed. We are trying to keep our rules somewhat in sinc with SBI

TomR 01-17-2004 10:28 PM

I'm assuming you are correct!!!

Ron P 01-18-2004 11:35 AM

Clarification is needed. I just send this stuff out, I don't write the rules.

A call to OPA central will help to clarify things. 732 477 7400.

Qball 01-19-2004 01:10 PM

It is not 65mph "average" lap speed...it is top speed and 60 mph will be average lap speed. Spoke w/smitty yesterday. Tom, I was out there last year and I never broke 65 in a race...I would consider my boat a "starter" boat. Anyway, your pantera does much better than 70 mph top speed.... I thought you guys were moving up a class.... I could be wrong though. Stay warm....buuuuurrrrr.

TomR 01-19-2004 01:29 PM

Qball,
Why do we need to change the class rules?? Our boat is set up to run P5.
Will our boat max out over 70mph in the right conditions, maybe?? But that isn't the point.
The P5 is from 61 to 70mph and the GPS will help enforce that.
We had no intention of moving up, and if they stay with this lastest change, that leaves us out of a class that fits!!! I'm not happy with this at all!!

outer42 01-19-2004 03:16 PM

stay tuned smitty will explain in a little while,it all work out.

AugiePensa 01-19-2004 03:29 PM

Hey Tommy, I'll have Smitty give you a call.

Qball 01-19-2004 03:39 PM

Tom, Smitty can explain the rule changes....I guess they have their reasons......
I have a feeling all will work out...:)
Stay warm....keith

I'm sorry we meant 165. Just a typo. I will clear this up tomorrow, I have a brain fart but have to work out some details. Stay tuned, don't sweat. Smitty

Last season, Tom,Bobby and myself went to every race knowing that we had no chance to win unless 4 other boats broke or flipped. my sonic ran 70 in perfect water conditions. We sold the sonic and bought a pantera so we can be competitive in p5 which p5 has always been 60-69mph for as long as ive been following offshore racing. Why are you guys(OPA) trying to reinvent the wheel????????????????????? If you have a boat that cannot run 69mph, then wake the motor up so it can go 69mph. That's racing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Goodness

You guys do get excited easily, calm down, call me 732 920 3945

AugiePensa 01-21-2004 12:37 PM

John, I think we're running P3 and Smitty's running P2. Does that help you out. Hey Scotty, wazzup!

FRIENDSHIP 1 01-21-2004 12:57 PM

I just got my boat to run 170....Guess I gotta bring the rockets back.....

TomR 01-21-2004 06:45 PM

If these changes happen, what will be the top speed in P4??

Wazzup Racing 01-21-2004 08:06 PM

P-5

I WAS TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO MOVE THE BOATS UP. AND HAD A BIGGER PICTURE IN MIND. IF YOU ARE ALL TOO IMPATIENT, THEN FINE P5 GOES BACK TO 70.

F1-00 Racing 01-21-2004 08:45 PM

Tom,

Hey bud, I think I kinda have an idea of what Smitty is trying to do, but then again the nice warm sun down here might have fryed some of my brain cells. If the class is set up with an avg speed max of 65 and maybe the GPS high speed of like 75 then it is a real simple deal. In order to avg 65 your boat must at least do 75-78 top speed. (the speed in the turns brings the avg speed down remember) In NY last year Jerry and John only avg approx 57 mph for the whole race, and realistically look at Brick what did we all avg 40 mph to make it thru that one. The only place where it might become an issue is Cambridge, but then again just watch the throttle and it'll be fine. Good Luck this year to you guys and hope to see you soon. This only my opinion as to what is going on, come to think about it, I have no idea what Smitty has up his sleeve but I am sure it will benefit you guys.

Trent

BRUCE SEROFF 01-21-2004 08:53 PM

the change was meant as 65 max gps speed in an effort to attract more newcomers. the faster P5 boats would bump up to P4 ... P4 boats would bump up to P3 and P3 boats to P2. I understand OPAs logic, but I dont think it will work in the long run. so, i believe the rules will go back as originally discussed at december's meeting.

SHARKEY-IMAGES 01-21-2004 11:48 PM

Just to eliminate some of the confusion:

Is it a Max Average Speed?

or

Is it a Top Speed that cannot be exceeded?

BRUCE SEROFF 01-22-2004 07:06 AM

Sharkey....The rules will be enforced using max speed via GPS. P5=not to exceed 70 mph. in theory, your avg lap speed in ocean conditions should not exceed 60. In river or bay races, the avg lap speed will be adjusted at the discretion of the officials. Avg lap speed will only be used in the event of GPS failure.

ScottB 01-22-2004 07:32 AM

Whats up Augie and Smitty, I will find out w/in the next few weeks on a new sponsor based in Jersey. If it works out, I will definately be racing NY with you guys and hopefully one other, maybe Point. I thinks you guys need a Fl fix, I've been watching the weather and realizing how great it is not to live there anymore

Hauling Trash 01-22-2004 08:51 AM

Thanks Scott

You coming up for the OPA party ??

Mike

ScottB 01-22-2004 08:55 AM

Would love to, but I am alergic to cold weather

AugiePensa 01-22-2004 11:54 AM

Scotty, that's cold......very cold! We may come down and invade your home Scott, don't answer the door. You NEVER know what Smitty and I may do.....on the spur of the moment! Stay warm, Augie

Your always welcome, I have been here long enough to know where to get good mozzarella, prosciutto, and Salami;)
