Default SBI Back With A Vengeance

That's a great banner. Congrats to JC and crew, a class organization that allows us to do what we love with minimal B.S.

Show up, Be safe, Party and Race.
See you in Miami.

this is from the Key West Citizen

Tourism funds for powerboat races go to local promoters

BY MANDY BOLEN
Citizen Staff Writer

KEY WEST — A group of local powerboat race enthusiasts and supporters will produce this year's race in November using $80,000 from the Monroe County Tourist Development Council.

Key West tourism officials heard Wednesday presentations from two groups interested in producing the race and in receiving the $80,000 under a TDC contract.

The Conch Republic Key West World Championship group, which consists of businessman Bill Spottswood, race producer John Carbonell and race enthusiast Randy Moore, told members of the Key West District Advisory Committee that a successful race is as important to them as it is to DAC members.
"If we don't put on a good event, I have no place to hide," Spottswood said.

Michelle May-Schmidt of APBA Offshore emphasized in her organization's request for the $80,000 the importance of the American Power Boat Association and its sanctioning power to ensure a successful and well-attended race week.

"There is no substitute for APBA and I think we all learned that last year," May-Schmidt said, referring to APBA's refusal to sanction last year's race because of disagreements with the sanctioning body and race promoter Lee Mills.

Initial attempts to combine both groups — APBA Offshore and Conch Republic World Championships — and have them work together for race week Nov. 15 through 21 did not materialize, but Carbonell said he was still negotiating with APBA officials and had not
ruled out the possibility of combining the groups.

The nine DAC members voted unanimously at the end of a four-hour meeting to award the $80,000 to the local group, and set forth requirements that at least 70 boats participate in each of the three races days in the harbor. The minimum length of the boats counted in the 70 is 24 feet long, and national television coverage must be aired within 90 days of the event.

The group also pledged that spectators could view the race for free from areas including Mallory Square.
The DAC members also allocated $10,000 to the Navy's Morale, Welfare and Recreation department to be spent on promoting a Blue Angels airshow to be held at Boca Chica Nov. 6 and 7, which will be free to the public.

Hey Frank,
How about it? Slow, honest and steady. It looks like we are about to make a whole lot of new friends.

Where is "Team Koolhand" staying in Orange Beach? SQ
