Scott, Tomlinson win class in Keys powerboat races
Associated Press
MARATHON, Fla. - Racers David Scott and John Tomlinson easily won the Superboat Unlimited class in the Fountain Powerboats Marathon Super Boat Grand Prix in the Florida Keys on Sunday.
Piloting Bacardi Silver, Scott, of Edwardsville, Ill., and Tomlinson, of Miami, jumped way out in front of the fleet at the start of the event that required powerboat racers to navigate under both old and new Seven Mile Bridges.
Their 100.4 mph average speed was the fastest of the 32-boat fleet.
Television and film actress Alisa Reyes hitched a ride in Bacardi, after her own production class race boat suffered a mechanical failure during a practice round Saturday.
"At one point we were going 150 mph," Reyes said. "It seemed pretty tight going under the bridges."
Firewater, crewed by Rich Wyatt of Pittsburgh and Herb Stotler of Fort Lauderdale, placed first in Superboat Vee class.
"Our strategy was to run hard the whole race," said Stotler. "We had to do that to beat the guy that was racing against us."

Thanks to everyone involved for another safe race in Marathon. Looking forward to the "unified" race in Sarasota. It's definitely a step in the right direction and I applaud everyone at APBA Offshore and Superboat Intn'l for working through the details in order that this 4th of July offshore race can take place.
