Re: Boat racing or GPS speed watching
nobody gets any better sandbagging, you only get faster and better running as hard as you can,as far as the GPS,you can always run by avererage lap speed, those are our only two choices!
It seems to me they are in the process of getting boats where they need to be anyway, one course may leave your lap speeds down, and another course will bring it up,thats for them to sort out,but if you find yourself "sandbagging",then you need to move up,it will only make you better! besides, racing is supposed to be fun, isn't that what P-classes are for? |

I can remember a Suthpen with a blower motor running P4 and a 29 Fountain with a blower motor running P4 before the GPS's. Overall they work and I'd rather race with them than without. BH

Re: Boat racing or GPS speed watching
What would be the problem with having only one GPS on board. The sealed one placed there by the sanctioning body. If you're running in the right class you would never have any concern about breaking out and therefore not need a GPS.I've posted this idea several times and haven't received any support or critiscm. How would you navigate? I think we're still required to have a compass. Peconic did reply once that GPS's can be made similiar to a watch and therefore the crew could still monitor their speed. How helpful would a watch size GPS be at race speeds? If you're legal why does anyone need a large display GPS, in some cases one for the driver and one for the throttleman?

Re: Boat racing or GPS speed watching
Raynman, Thats a good idea! My guess is people would still bring hand held GPS units on before the race started. If everyone was as honest as you they wouldnt need tec. inspectors at races.

Re: Boat racing or GPS speed watching
You should realize by now that every group is listening to what the racers want. If you all want to run without onboard GPS units, just say so in a unified voice and I'm sure a simple rule like that, which makes sense would be easily adopted.
Just speak up with a unified voice. |
Re: Boat racing or GPS speed watching
If its not broken don't fix it...Every race the teams are getting closer and closer, the teams that are braking out are being moved up a class and racing in the correct classes. It will takes alittle time but slowly it is shaping up,the average lap speeds do work like Al said if you don't sandbag it will make for better racing all the way around. The classes are the tightest I think they have ever been, and some good racing. With alittle time it will only get better, and better the P class is growing everyday and only going to get bigger.

Re: Boat racing or GPS speed watching
This is just somthing i have been watching since marathon and i could be
all wrong, but i dont think apba would DQ anyone in the P classes this year no matter what speed they run.I know for a fact Wild Ride run a illegal prop in marathon but that was ok as longe as they didnt break out in P4.I also have it in film of them passing Herbet by at least 5mph,but still didnt break out, then again if yor running a 90 mph boat in a 80 mph class i guess it OK with apba. Now let get to lap speed,I may have my issues with big John but i feel nobody know more about how to time speed in a race.SBI says 8 to 10 mph between lap speed and top speed and according to Franky they have tested this out over and over.Sarasota was a fairly flat race so lets use 8 mph as the diff.I had Gambler set up to run 79.5 flat out,no rev.limiter no govener of any kind.MY team is in there 4th year so i think the know how to get around a course. There top lap speed is 68.8 there gps says 77.?,add 9mphto there lap speed and you get 77.8 wich tells me SBI isnt far off on there estimated speeds.Nlets go to the top 3 boats in P4 who all have gps speeds over 79 mph but not over 79.9 so there legal. Now look at there lap speeds and you get 75.5 even 76 now using 8mph instead of 9 that my team had figuring that being factory 1 an 2 boats are stepped bottums including Super V light they should make a little better time. Now if you add 8mph to 76 lap speed you should get 84 gps speed.4mph diff.gets you DQ.Now why is it SBI says 8 to 10 but these boats can do it in 4 or less and not break out.APBA THIS STINKS.And Jim if you had returnd my phone call i wouldnt have had to print this. Re: Boat racing or GPS speed watching
Mel, Anyone is welcome to get in our boat and use whatever prop they want and try to break 80, we tried all last year and couldn't. Our boat consistantly runs 78.4-78.7. Why do you think we got our asses kicked in F1 last year. Hell, in Savannah we ran 75 in the Kilo and beat The Kilo winner Velocity on race day. Give us a little credit here.I personally think our 79.6 was a spike because we never saw it. Its a 29 Warlock with a tired 500 EFI. I can tell you this, we let off the pins in turn 2 only and ran that boat as hard as we could. Maybe the course measurement were off and thats where the hi lap speeds came from.
Dave told me himself he was still getting used to the boat, maybe he didn't run it hard enough. Personally,We would never waste time and money to go out and sandbag, thats just no fun. Yes Wild ride might be fast, but he almost lost it in a few turns and is getting used to his boat as well. If you can get our boat to run 80.1, we'll run P3 |
Re: Boat racing or GPS speed watching
how can you have an illegal prop in P-class???...you can't!
if your complaining about the 'rules' in P-class,WOW....just move up to an F class boat....or another SV(C) class. p-class has turned into the pursuit of how to make your boat go slower... |
