I had my parents out to their first ever Offshore Race today. My hometown is Deerfield so I got them VIP passes for the Pier. They said they would come for the early(my) race but then they were bailing.
They were nervous and scared for me, but there to support never the less.
After our race was over I told them I'd come to the beach and see them before they left. I was putting the boat up and would be there right away so they could leave. Next minute I get a call from my MOTHER that Callan had broke and Miccosukee was loosing a hatch. I'm getting play-by-play from a 58 yr. old woman thats never been to a race!!
I get to the Pier and meet my Dad about 1/2 way out. I tell him to get mom and take off. He says "Hell NO, We're not goin' anywhere". My mother wouldn't leave the end of the pier and my Dad continues to tell me the race is the coolest thing he's ever seen. He says they only came to support me and he was sure they would be bored. Now they are booking rooms to be in Key West for 4 of the 9 days.
My point is, if we can win over 2 people in their late 50's with LOTS of other interests(Harleys, classic cars, etc.) I know this sport can GROW. We just need to get more people to come out. The sport speaks for itself in person.
Lets figure this out and set REAL 3-5 yr. goals for marketing and growth. I'll do watever I can.
