25, looks like your group had a great trip. Georgian Bay really is one of the best boating locales on Earth isn't it? The weather has been just amazing the last few weeks too. I'm sitting at the cottage right now enjoying another sunny 80* day :)
Thanks for posting the pics. |

Great pictures of what I feel is the one of the most scenic areas on the planet. Our family spends its summers at our lodge on Manitoulin Island (Kagawong, North Channel, just west of your route). We've been going for 50 years, now 4 generations.
Take in the Benjamins and the Channel for one of your trips- wonderful people up there! Jim |
There is a reason that some of us call Georgian Bay "god's country". I think you just got a small taste of why. :)

great pictures, thanks for sharing. That was quite a trip you took, I can't imagine the fuel $$. I just looked at the map and followed the route you must have taken. Where did you launch. Did you leave Tobermory and head across the bay back to Parry, when the trip was over. How many miles across the bay is that. Did you stay at Marinas every night, some of the places looked fairly remote. Is the Georgian Bay part of Lake Huron. You are lucky to be able to get such a large group together for a long trip like that.
I just re-read my post, so sorry for all the questions but I have always wanted to spend time doing that type of trip so my head is just full of things to ask you :D |
MsP, yes G Bay is part of Huron. Its oft referred to as the sixth great lake. The west side is rugged and for the most part wide open. The east side is home to the 30,000 islands. Both beautiful in their own way. Its 20 something miles across and very deep in the middle. Huge wave with a north/north west wind in the lower east half, the same with south easterlies if your in the north side. I have seen honest 10's rolling south for mile after mile.
It is by far, one of the most amazing places to boat on earth. There are towns with marinas that serve the cruising public as well as thousands of very private anchorages. You need to have all necessary charts. Mistakes there will cost you large. Granite always wins. ask Bob the builder :). |
Some info on Georgian Bay from Encyclopedia Brittanica:
"bay, northeastern arm of Lake Huron, south-central Ontario, Canada. It is sheltered from the lake by Manitoulin Island and the Bruce (or Saugeen) Peninsula. The bay is 120 miles (190 km) long and 50 miles (80 km) wide, and the depth (generally 100–300 feet [30–90 m]) reaches a maximum of 540 feet (165 m) near the Main Channel, which leads to Lake Huron. " Airpacker, don't forget that southern Georgian Bay has the longest freshwater beach in the world. Truly an amazing body of water. |
Is this the area that has what they call Flower Pot Bay? Ive always wanted to boat there. A freind of mine purchased a helo shot of his boat in there. It was amazing to see 30ft pillars of stone surounding his boat.
|
The Flower Pot Islands are just north of Tobermory ony a few miles out in the bay towards Manatoulin. Its 20 minutes by boat (depending how fast your vessel is???) and yes the pillars were carved out by nature and stand erect all along the shoreline of the island(s)
You may stop and hike for the day if you wish to stop and the one and only docking facility but need permission to enter and must sign in. There is NO overnight camping and of course you are responsible for all your waste containers garbage etc as the Parks Commission counts everything!Oh...and no flower picking allowed either :) They are a marvel to see as not many of these structrues exist anywhere else. |
Awesome pics thanks for sharing. I haven't been up there in 20 yrs and my Dad has been wanting to do the trip for the past 4 yrs. I think next summer we will have to do it. How long did the trip take you?
|
Thanks for the pics. They bring back a lot of good memories. I have boated in Michigan my whole life and finally did a North Channel trip 2 years ago with 2 other boats. It was by far the best boating I have ever experienced. If anyone has ever thought about doing a trip in this area, take the time and do it. You will not regret it and will always want to go back.
|
Thanks for the info you guys. Red Tail did you tow you boat or go up the coast of Lake Huron. I would rather tow to one of the towns on the lower part of the bay, but none of the roads on the west side of Ontario look like a major highway. Does anyone know what 21 is like, it's the main road that hugs the shore. If we were to tow any suggestions on where would be the best place in the lower part of the bay to launch our 43' Black Thunder. If we were to come by boat from the lower part of Lake Huron are there any cut through to the bay before you hit Tobermory, it does not look like but my map is not that detailed. Maybe an international OSO trip should be planned for next summer.:D |
Where are the 1,000 islands?
|
We have done it from lake St Clair it was some of the best boating I have ever done. Once you get to to Tobermory you need to pay close attention to the charts. We went 5 boats and went into some cove that were awsome BUT did go over huge rocks that we just below the boat. Nothing like seeing black bear on the side of the moutains.

We always trailered to Tobermory Ontario (from Western NY). A nice ramp with an easy launch and you were set to explore the peninsula area or head over to the North channel
|
Ms. PatriYacht : We towed up to Detour Village on the eastern tip of the UP and headed into the the North Channel from the west. We made stops in Meldrum Bay (cleared customs ), and Gore Bay, as well as remote anchorages as we went east. Before we headed into the N. Channel, we did a side trip and hit Mackinac Island and the Chain of Lakes for a couple of days. Overall it was great trip.
