SOUTH HAVEN
Black River boat explosion hospitalizes 4
Several people hurled into river by force of blast; 3 boats catch fire

By JIM DALGLEISH
H-P City Editor
SOUTH HAVEN — An explosion on a boat moored in South Haven on Sunday sent four people to hospitals and caused an estimated $500,000 worth of damage, South Haven Area Emer*gency Services reported.
SHAES responded to a 1:54 p.m. call at the Black River Yacht Club at 290 Oak St. to find three boats on fire and four people hurt, Chief Ronald Wise reported in a news release. Several people had been blown into the riv*er by the explosion’s force and were pulled from the water by other boaters.
The four, whose names were not released, were tak*en to South Haven Commu*nity Hospital and then trans*ferred to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.
Wise said the blast and fire extensively damaged three boats and caused mod*erate damage to two others.
Wise said it appears one of the vessels was being re*fueled when the blast oc*curred.
The state police Fire Mar*hal’s Division has been asked to join the SHAES in*vestigation, Wise said. The exact cause of the explosion has not been determined.

A reminder to everyone...run your blower for 5 mins. &/or open that hatch, prior to turning that ignition switch/key....

that happen 2 slips down from a friend of mine. thank goodness he took his boat out friday. he said they would fuel that boat with a 30 or 40gal gas tote on wheels. he also said you could always smell fuel for a while after fueling that boat. like a vent or something was not right.

Does anyone else reading this tread use the portable gas tote??

I've seen many variations of this type of fueling...

I'm curious as to your experience with same...

In Fla a truck pulls up to my bro's house, runs long hose out to his boat on hoist & fills up. Kind of like heating oil trucks up north.

Yeah, there used to be a hitter with an Apache who would pull into the marina (near the gas dock) and do the same...

Stated that he wanted the highest octane fuel straight from the source...

Never any problems...
