Default Michigan Boating question

My parents have a place on St Clair. I was curious as to why most larger boats up there seem to be state registered vs CG documented. Is the state registration cheap in MI?

Here on the Ohio River it seems most larger boats are documented. Especially the ones from KY since the state charges a property tax on boats annually.

Just wondering.

The state reg. is mandatory even if the boat is documented. The only advantage of documentation in Michigan is you do not have to display MC#'s on the hull.

And if you don't display MC#'s it just gives them another excuse to harass you.
