Canadian Customs

I boat in the 1K Islands and I heard that even if you are passing thru Canadian waters, you better be heading to customs or else you could be fined.

Local NY paper told a story of a US citize, fishing in Canadian waters, (Gananoque area), was drifting, no anchor, had a Canadian fishing license, was approached by Canadian customs, asked if he "checked in", he replied no, they were going to take his boat unless he paid 1,000 on the spot as a fine.

He had to call and get a charge card number from a family member as he didn't fish with 1,000 dollars in his pocket.

I have to wonder how strict they will enforce this law.

ok i boat in the 1000 islands every weekend. I have never heard of this. I am on the canadian side and never here of americans be charged just for boating in canadian waters. I boat all the time in american waters without checking in.

So, i would say you are safe without checking in and chances are that the OPP officer was just being a moron.

It's all true. Unbelievable.

Could someone post a link to this story? I can't seem to find anything on it, thanks.

Never mind, I found the story, pretty straight forward to me, $1000 FINE is not the same as demanding $1000 CASH, they seized the baot AND fined him, what part of the law did he not get?

The one that nobody knows about! It's always been that all of the Great Lakes waterways were open as long as you didn't anchor or go ashore.

it was the Canadian customs officer that impounded the boat.
might be more to the story. I suspect it was some rookie on a power trip. our local Senator is looking into it and someone will have their ass handed to them.
the last thing the Canadian gov wants is to deter tourism
