Ask here, don't know of any local forums. Not a whole lot of water to run offshore style with but a fun party lake. Watch out for shallow areas.
If you stay overnight at Dirty Turtle and have to pinch a loaf early in the mornin', pack an extra roll of paper towels for the woods :drink: |
Nah, quick early morning swim. No paper needed.:grinser010:

Just wondering what kinds of boats are out there? Are there a lot of restaurants/bars? Places to get gas? How many boats go out to that sand bar on the weekends? Is it family orientated or is it a party?
How long does it take to get from one side of the lake to the other? Is the water clean? Has to be better than our mud hole... lol I'm used to boating on the Chain O lakes every weekend were there's everything from 16' jon boats to 40 cruisers, a lot of bars/restaurants and probably 100+ boats at our sandbar every weekend. Thanks guys! |
I've been there a few times but don't know of a sandbar other than running upstream and hanging out along the banks of the river.
Is there a sandbar somewhere on Castle Rock Lake? Hey Someguy have you tried the Mississippi River out? It's also a really fun place to go boating...one of these days I want to get down by you and check out the Chain. |
Boats vary just like the Chain but maybe not as many performance boats at Castle. Usually no real big hardware.
Castle is actually 4th largest lake in WI, kind of hard to believe. Crusin 70-80 you will be end to end to end in about 15 min. Be careful at night, old utlity structures not lit. Several bars/grills and a very nice restaurant all by boat if you wish. Lot's of N IL folks so you'll feel at home haha. Many families with kids of all ages, however seems like most parents drink, nothing wrong with that. :drink: Used to be a great sandbar with large beach parties at Gilligan's but I think that is gone. We always stayed there in the cabins for 100 nt with free slip but they tore 'em down and built condos :angry-smiley-038: Another sandbar on the north west side of the lake. Don't go past the northern railroad bridge, lots of stumps and fisherman. Splash bar is just before the bridge on the east, gets shallow there too. Nice thing is most is all sand bottom so if you stick it, nothing to ruin the weekend except ego. Water is dark, iron-ore style and will stain the boat good. A good wax on the bottom and waterline will make easier removal when you get home. Very clean I guess, never had any hives, rash, herpes etx. There won't be a hundred boats at one time, maybe 30-50 max hanging out in same area. It can get rough 3+ ft'rs with the right wind, docks can get pounded too. A great place, check it out before end of Aug as it starts to get quiet then. You can launch at the county park sw side of the lake or the Dirty Turtle is probably the best to dunk. Have fun !! :drink: :hitit: |

The power line rocks are gone . The lines were removed but they left the poles as they had nests on top. Now they are all gone. Hazard buoy where the Southern most island was but no problems . You can go all around it just stay a bit away. I think the pile is gone and not an issue unless the water is really low. Even then you would have to run damn close to the buoy. If you run under the bridge , you can run to the Petenwell dam, good haul. Stumps and sand bars everywhere but the DNR put in Center channel markers years ago. Stay by them and you can navigate safely. Lots of bars up the river. Moving constantly with the currents year to year. Always fun in the spring to hit one that was 15' over last year. Brown tannin water and pea soup algae bloom in July but usually over by now. Pine Cove, Dirty Turtle, Shipwreck Bay , Port o Call are all bar/restaurants on the south west corner. Minutes from each other. There is actually a Castle Rock boaters club that a friend had started by himself. They run on weekends and hang out on the beaches and bars as a group. Fun bunch. |

I miss the old days. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...42-35/35-6.jpg A local business mans kid ran the boat into the rock islands heading home from the bars at wee hrs of the morning. Cant remember for sure but I think a kid died. He had a lake house a few down from ours in Half Moon Bay. |
