in fear of sounding like a idiot...how do i set a pic of my boat as my Avatar?

go into settings and on the left side it says edit avatar. upload a pic and your done

I wish it were that easy but no where on any screen does it say that. i see "edit profile but that doesnt seem to get me anywhere either. i tried general settings i tried everything. i clicked every option on the left side looking for Edit avatar or edit profile pic or anything of that nature. do i have to be more than a "REGISTERED" member? do i need to upgrade just to get a pic? i do feel as though i should be able to figure this out.. ...
