Kelleys Island ?

Planning a trip to PIB or Kelleys over the 4th for the first time. Where is the best place to put in at around Sandusky area for the truck and trlr to be safe for several days.I have found slips at Kelleys Portside but nothing at PIB, which is better Kelleys or PIB. Any advice or tips would be great Thanks

Ebay Ed 05-29-2013 02:25 PM

PIB state docks are first come first served as for launch there is Dempseys and Mazuriks on the Marblehead peninsula and west harbor and east harbor state parks east harbor has people working there most of the time so it is probably a little safer but i have parked at both mazuricks and dempseys over night and longer with no issues PIB has more to do than Kellys but if you dock at the state docks at PIB you wont want to leave because they will not save your spot and pretty much guarantee you will loose your spot

Never stopped at Kelleys Island, just drove around it. heard the casino there is pretty cool though. we always launch at East Harbor (Port Clinton) and have had no problems with leaving our rig their. Love PIB, beautiful scenery there. we always stay on B Dock. Have a safe trip,

tom

I like kelleys better then pib. If u like the more leaded back fun good times go to kelleys. If u like more of a collage seen then pib would be better. If u go to kelleys the casino has docking for gofast boats and is a fun time thats where we dock all the time and never have a peoblem geting in. But eather place will be a good time.

I've never launched anywhere near Sandusky, just Muzurik and Catawba State Park. Never had a issue at either place and we've gone up for 3-5 days at a time. There are docks on Middle Bass Island that are setup like Portside at Kelley's, you pay for a spot and come and go as you please, once your in at PIB your in. Maybe durning the week you can leave and come back, but you can't get mad if someone pulls in where you were. If you want to do some boating then you'll have to go to Middle Bass and and the Sonny S back and forth to PIB, a lot cheaper then taking the jet express from kelleys to the bay. You also have the option of anchoring in the harbor just north of Perrys Monument and having the water taxi come get you if you just plan on coming for the day, hope you have a good anchor.

I'm with Fishin Sucks when it comes to Kelleys. It does have its positives but the entertainmnet is at the Bay. B dock guys have there heads on straight and will look out for your boat when your not around, just be sure to get there when they are there for help tieing up, I believe there channel 68.

Have fun, always a great time at the Bay.

scarab600 05-29-2013 05:24 PM

How early do you have to be to get on B dock on a holiday week and can you stay the night.

scarab600 05-29-2013 05:30 PM

Are there places boats hang out other then on the island

if the weather is nice people go to the sandbar in the Sandusky bay across form cedar point or another good spot is on the north side of Kelley's. both good spots to anchor and have a good time.

Ebay Ed 05-29-2013 05:54 PM

yes you can stay the night on B dock that is the state docks at PIB i have stayed on A, B and C with no problems but just so you know if you are first in line in the tie off you will have people walking on your boat to get to theirs been a couple of years since i have been there but i would say July 4th you would want to get there early afternoon

Ebay Ed 05-29-2013 05:57 PM

DO NOT go between the point and the channel marker out at the sand bar or you will be getting towed off the sand you have to go out east of the channel marker a pretty good distance if you are anchored at the sand bar you will see what i am talking about as someone will try cutting between and get stuck happenes just about every weekend

boat us sites there waiting most of the time for people to run aground lol. I was told that the west side of the sandbar is really shallow this year so go in slow.

Ebay Ed 05-29-2013 06:07 PM

if you put in at Dempseys dont put your drive all the way down until after you clear the break wall there is a rock or something on the bottom just about right in the middle at the end of the breakwall and it will trash your prop if you hit it

s022mag 05-30-2013 10:32 AM

Also, don't go west out of PIB unless you go north of Gibraltar island first it may look like a neat way to go but it is very very shallow in between the sw point of Gibraltar and the closest point of south bass island.

a buddy tore up the bottom of his jet boat trying to go thru there a few years ago when the water was even deeper than what it is now best thing to do is follow the jet express if you are unsure of where to go

Just get on the right side of the green marker coming in the bay on the eastside of the island and your fine. You want to be between the green marker and Gibraltar island. Then stay in between the markers and it will take you right downtown!! Spent this last weekend at the bay and had a great time like always. Kellys is fun and more laid back but the bay has wayyyy better bars, food and night life! Have Fun!!!

Ebay Ed 05-30-2013 12:54 PM

there is more " scenery " at PIB than kelly's and choices for places to eat and drink also

scarab600 05-30-2013 04:04 PM

Thanks for all the info

We were going to go to B but it was packed, they run a tight ship over there. We usually stay at A but we couldn't get in and they weren't even half full if that tells you the placement of the boats:angry-smiley-055: they had small boats in between large ones and large ones rafted off of small ones. There was one opening where a 28 foot boat had its bow all the way up next to the stern of another with 10 feet behind him, I couldn't raft off of him because of that but if his boat was back 10 feet it would of been no problem. Had to ask a guy on C if I could raft off of him for the night he was pretty cool for being a Canadian:party-smiley-004:

paul235 05-31-2013 12:40 PM

it was a bit of a joke they had me so close to the guy infront my bow was between his outboards. I moved it back myself later on in the day . I didnt realize they don't have power hookups on A that kinda sucked not gonna lie! Next time ill swing by and we;ll all have to grab a drink. Ill be back in 2 weeks for the old ladys b-day!

I would like to make a trip down this year but with all you guys talking about sand bars and low water i'm a bit nervous. Whit the step hull we get no depth reading under speed and don't want to get stuck on a sand bar.

I dont know if i grew up a little or what but if I want to have a good night Kellys is the place. Never had my own personal boat at PIB at the city docks but be prepared for anything. If you really treasure and care about your boat than PIB docks on a holiday may give you a visit to your shrink. I wont lie, I loved it in my early twenties and still do enjoy going to the bay but now im happy going to kellys, catchin the ferry over to the bay, listening to a little Pat at the end of the nite and finishing my evening at kellys. Its almost like Cheers their. You almost always run into someone that knows your name.

RT we were right over by you guys visiting some people on a cruiser in the row right behind you guys. Saw a guy in a OSO shirt.

Dang Straight Brotha! I could have not said it better myself!

bigboat28 06-01-2013 10:20 AM

That was me in the shirt from what I can remember LOL. We were right behind Artie.

bigboat28 06-01-2013 10:21 AM

A dock has no power anywhere on it?

paul235 06-01-2013 01:35 PM

It has it on the cement docks but we were on that cat walk kinda thing that runs the same direction as the sidewalk. They actually have never let me tie up there before but I guess it was a off day?

JR quit fighting your love for the bay!! Did you ever get that oil changed or are you guys still up there watching it drip into that damn plastic tube? lol

s022mag 06-01-2013 02:19 PM

No power on the finger docks on A, unless you have enough shore power cable to get it there. C dock was very limited too. I was near the end tied up to a Baha Cruiser and there were only 2 hook ups and they were taken, luckly the guy next me had a 30amp to 110 coversion cord and I plugged in to run some small things. It ran the heat which was nice cause it sure got cold that night.:santa:

Apparently you cant have any kind of "big boat" on the finger docks either, I went to PIB a couple weeks ago the A dock guy put me on the wall on the outside, and the boat was hitting the dock kinda hard... so I said hey let me go there (the finger) he said bigger boats cant be there... I said dude for 15 years I been there many timnes with 32 Baja and others, up to a 46 rough rider....he said no not allowed, I was so pissed I left and went to C dock... I *****ed that azzwipe out so bad, reasons like that are why I don't do PIB much....there was zero reason I could not be there and he was a dikhead....

s022mag 06-01-2013 06:30 PM

Those guys really don't know what there doing any more. 4 years ago at xmas in july they did a pretty good job, after that it was down hill. I was on the finger dock and there was a center console with twins at least 30 feet long on the finger and the year after that I saw a 29 scarab on the inside of the finger dock. I also saw the same year them put a 18 foot open bow up against the finger dock and raft no one off it. Everywhere else 4 boats rafted off except where that 18 footer was.

They don't seem smart enough anymore to put the bigger boats up against the docks and raft the smaller ones off of them.

Yea he was a little lit up at that moment. That's Bajaicebreaker on here. I could kill him as he would keeping grabing beer out of my cooler and just start going crazy with it. The best was when his car speaker box vibrated right of his radar arch into the lake, Good times at the bay.

bigboat28 06-02-2013 10:34 AM

Nice Artie nice lol

Yea that dude was bouncing around on the sun pad like it was a trampoline.

s022mag 06-02-2013 10:59 AM

You didn't happen to get that on video, he had those speakers real secure:eek:

Hah! To funny Paul! That oil change took forever! I gotta get some fittings to pull the oil out of the drain hose instead of trying to pull 12 quarts out of a stir straw! And yes I do love they bay but to many good times at Kelleys!
