Grand Haven

Just a heads up to anyone planning on boating out of Grand Haven. We put in at the municipal marina last night just fine but when we started to head out into the channel we started to drag props bad about 30 yards out, trimmed up all the way. Got through it but was nervous for the return trip. On the way in tried a different approach and got the boat completely stuck and it took 10 minutes to get it free. Luckily no damage to the props or anything else. Also beware of all the debris in Lake Michigan, even saw what looked like half a telephone pole floating about a half mile out. Won't be going back there for a while, especially since the water is up right now too.

Not sure what was up. I went straight out and straight in from the launch to the channel. Are you talking about those bouys marking the logs. I watched a 30 powerquest come in right behind me same spot didn't get stuck but he was churning mud. Maybe I'm just to fat. Lol

I think it's the nicest ramp around. How many other ramps have like 8 docks and three parking lots. It was dredged a few weeks ago. You need to stay in the middle while going out (between the white markers) all the way to the river. I watched a 41 saber use it yesterday with out any problems. I usually bring my drives up about half way and never have had any problems.

I have been buying season permits for several years and told the city that I would not be back this year unless they dredged. I talked to the municipal staff yesterday, they said that the dredging of the launch has been complete for 3 weeks (end of may). I also have an email from the Harbor Transit facilities manager supporting this.
I haven't tried yet myself, but a friend told me he was seeing 15+ feet on the normal narrow buoy path that leads to the channel. It sounds like the dredged path is not well marked. In passed experience (watching others), there are areas that are 1-2' deep if you stray from the dredged area.
Last year, my engine blocks were half full of silt from sucking up off the bottom (when the main path to the channel was 3-4' deep). I took my freeze plugs out and brought the blocks to a power-washer. The sad thing is that I have transom pickups (not even drive pickups) that are level with the bottom of my boat. So the prop wash from my fully trimmed drives was churning junk up and it was thin enough to get through the sea strainer and started plugging my blocks and oil coolers. I wasn't happy given that I always keep my drives up and know the correct paths to the docks.

I wasnt referring to the docks/ramp, i was referring to the dredging... As much money is around there along with the fee money, it should be well maintained and dredged... Along with proper bouys, not yellowed floating softballs that look like they came out of my septic tank

Couple weeks ago I launched the third dock from the right when going out. I turned around and went straight out to the channel. About 30' out I was turning mud and bouned the prop off a log. I trimmed all they way up and got out with minimal damage. When I got into the channel I saw the white markers which were small and I didn't know I had to stay between them...lesson learned. On my way in a guy was doing the same thing as me and i had to point him towards the markers. I have stayed between the markers since with no issues. Although last week when I went by I didn't see the markers out? Maybe I'm blind.
Also I was about a mile north of Port Sheldon last thursday and saw dam near a whole tree sticking out of the water a little off shore (500' ft maybe?) I turned west for a couple minutes then continued on...
