Boxes
Anyone else have boxes on a 388???
Mine came from the factory with them and didnt know if the boat performed better with or with out them. |
Re: Boxes
my buds old 388 came w/ them also. not sure if it made a difference or not. it was a 2000 PR edition. whippled 500EFI's from Hustler. Is yours similar?
|
Re: Boxes
Yes, mines a 99 pleasure edition with whippled 500EFI's.
|
Re: Boxes
Yours came from hustler that way?
his was a 1/2 cabin poker run edition. no deck hatches either. |
Re: Boxes
No, teague custom marine installed them after the fact.
|
Re: Boxes
Ill have to ask him. Hes got plenty of seat time in a 98 388 w/ hp500's w/ no boxes and had some time in the whippled w/ boxes before rerigging it w/ 6's. i was in the 98 myself and it handled great. never rode in the 2000 when it had bravos.
|
Re: Boxes
Just talked to my buddy. His boat, when it still had the bravos, porpoised pretty bad around 98 or so. the 98, w/ no boxes, rode like a dream, but, only ran 85-86 mpg. he also mentioned another guy had a 388 w/ bulldogs & boxes that ran 90mph and smooth as well.. so, as for the boxes being a culprit, cant make a verifiable answer. hows does yours ride at 100?
|
Re: Boxes
I haven't had it to 100 yet only 96. Hopefully next season. The motors have just been rebuilt. The boat tends to chine walk alot at higher speeds and not so much a porpoised but a hop in calmer water.
|
Re: Boxes
Chip and Joe said they dont help. But in 2003 that started putting the ITS on them>
388 Hustler Ben has them on his. |

Re: Boxes
Thanks for the info. A number 6 boat should handle and drive completely different from a bravo one. I am currently in the process in trying to sell mine so if you know anyone that wants one let me know.
Thanks again Dan |
Re: Boxes
it did ride a lot different.. what tabs are you running? 280's or 380's? he said the 380's were way to big for it w/ the bravo setup..
he said it did hop in the calm over 90 w/ the bravos.. what are asking for yours? |
Re: Boxes
Im running the 280 tabs but thinking about installing some 380's.
I think that's the first time i've heard a negative response to the 380's on a hustler. |

Thanks again Dan They do... LMarth has one with 5's does 104 like a Cadillac :drink: |
Re: Boxes
I think it's the weight in the back to compensate for some of the stern lift that does it.
|
Re: Boxes
Could be. The SSM's also have a larger skeg which should give extra stability albeit with more drag. I've got a really high 'x' dimension. Maybe Rob stilll has a picture of G Force's stern. Rob and I put the 380 tabs on last spring. They definitely help get me on plane which has been a challenge, especially with a full load of fuel. Didn't get enough experience this last summer at high speeds to comment on how they affect stability with full/light fuel loads.

Re: Boxes
You're correct. Rick Merola, the owner of Aqua Mania originally sold the boat to Mark. Since then, the 800SC's were rebuilt by Sterling and the Hubers upgraded to 1330's. I bought the boat in August of 2000.Long story, but last year Mark briefly owned a 42' Outer Limits with Sterling 1500's. He's had some wild toys. I know I'm biased, but I count my blessings that I stumbled onto such a fun ride. Rob's got some pictures he's promised to post shortly.

Re: Boxes
Rob-Thanks for posting the pictures. They were from the 2000 Cleveland Poker Run. Ugly 6'+ waves. Literally, there was blood in the boat from some gashes getting tossed around plus a smoked transmission. The boat really is unique with every conceivable option (tv/vcr,fridge,shower,ultra suede trim, grafic efx paint etc). The prior owner had a custom three person bolster setup with footrest installed in the back after a few ribs got broken at the 1000 Island Poker Run. It's probably the same option available now in the Cheetah. It's really a solid, well built boat that's well suited for the Great Lakes. Never satisfied, I wish it had a little more power. Joe knows the boat well and said there's a sister boat to it out there somewhere. Hustler also built some with stock power with Number 6's. I saw one at Aqua-Mania a few years ago. Certainly simplifies upgrades. Rob's boat is really sharp and goes!! Thanks again buddy..Lou

Re: Boxes
Lmarth, you arent kidding. Mark has some serious coin. Remember Team Scream, the 40 Skater him and Merola raced a couple years. Then he had the 50 Hustler w/ trip Sterlings.. Some serious hardware.
Didnt know Hustler rigged another 388 w/ 5's.. hmm. They only rigged one 388 w/ 6's which went to Las Vegas. Had natural 1000's in it. The one at Aquamania is my buds old boat. It originally had bravos. he rerigged it w/ the 6's. Rick has it listed again for the current owner. |
Re: Boxes
I only saw the Skater on the Team Scream web site. The 50 with the triple 1050 Sterlings was one impressive boat to see up on a Hydro-Hoist. The Slingshot with 6's I saw in Merola's parking lot I think was plain white with the black Aqua-Mania 'For Sale' sign painted on the side of the bow. I did a double take when I saw the 6's. I sent Rob some pictures of the triple Sterlings under the hatch.

Re: Boxes
Does Lake Cumberland still have that 50? They did that Spiderman or whatever it is paint scheme on it. I remember it as all white from the Abay run in I think 2000 maybe.
Yes, that 388 was all white w/ the upper fairing painted blue. i have a bunch of pics, but, am basic, so, no posting allowed. Here it is listed though: http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/7/0/81326370.htm |
Re: Boxes
When Mark's 50 was delivered to LCM, the boat was still white. It had a message painted on the side to the effect that, I believe,"Paint coming by Color Graphics". The boat was a 2000 and was named "Cosmic Voyager".

Here's the #6 SlingShot currently for sale....

I would like to see all the Hustler pictures you have anyway. Thanks Rob :drink: |
Re: Boxes
Being a stickler for accuracy, I'd like to clarify my last post so no one gets an incorrect impression. I know the boat was white at LCM because it was on their web site that way. What I don't know is whether the Cosmic Voyager/Color Graphics references were still on it. They might have been removed at that time.

Re: Boxes
That's it-Kolorcraft. I think Geg Smith is the owner. I called him about 4-5 years ago. He was very familiar with my boat and was willing to touch it up any time I was interested. The old brain cells have trouble remembering all this stuff. I sent Rob some pictures last year of Cosmic Voyager.Green accents on million dollar plus boats are referred to as...teal!

Re: Boxes
Yup. Greg Smith. He owned that 35 Cafe Racer w/ big power and sweet paint also. Greg didnt paint your boat did he?
|
Re: Boxes
I honestly don't know. The paint design on the sides and deck were by Grafic efx. They supposedly cut the stencils. I don't remember if Joe, Greg or Grafic efx shot it.

Re: Boxes
Whoever did it, did one hell of a job.. That paint is sweet..
These guys did a lot of work for Hustler also... www.ipaintfx.com |
