38 slingshot info?
My Fountain friends will hang me if they see this thread but I am looking for info from other board members who own slingshots. I have been considering one and am curious about some things. #1 ride quality in the rough (3-4).#2 Speed on stock power(500efis). #3 resale. Please help me with some of these. I am sonsidering this boat as my next one.
Thanks raf |

#1, #2 and #3 all better that a 38 Fountain and much more. Mine is for sale if your interested. Let me know.
#1) Ride is good in 3-4's, anything bigger in any boat is uncomfortable, but the boat can take it. #2) Speed is 82-85 with stock 500EFI's, 95+ with them Whippled. #3) Resale is decent. Better than Fountain, but not Cigarette. |

Re: 38 slingshot info?
Currently have a 38 Fountain. Love the boat but want to change it up a bit.

Re: 38 slingshot info?
I have heard that the slingshots at wot get a little squirly? Is this true. Every 38-42 Fountain I have been in including my own is straight as an arrow. I am looking for info on handling as well.

Mine runs good up to about 96-97 then ya have to drive it.When it was stock low 80s it never felt anything weird.I would even sit on the hatch while my buddy drove it wfo in smooth water. The Hustler is deeper, has more room in the cockpit and the v birth is bigger, it doesn't have glued in carpet up front or in the bathroom. I would think the newer 05-06 staggered 38-42 Fountains would be faster.Hustler hasn't change the bottom since 97.I like the new 2006 Fountain cockpit interior.I still don't like the flat dash or the throttles. |
Re: 38 slingshot info?
I'm looking for good rough water capability but something a little different. I am looking at 99 through 01 slingshots. Need more cabin space which is not offered on fountain models. Just curious more about performance and handling of the boat. Thanks for your input Strippoker

Re: 38 slingshot info?
Oh. I currently run a 99 38 Fever. 500hps. Looking for more cabin space and a little more freeboard.

Before I bought my 2001 Hustler I looked at the 38 Fountains 99-2001 and they said 42's were faster, had a better bottom.I think they changed the 38 F in 2005 to the new bottom.I still like the 42's better. If they could put a 42 Fountain bottom on a 388 hustler :drink: |
Re: 38 slingshot info?
I appreciate your thoughts but that still does not tell me a whole lot. In fact you are confusing me more than ever. Would I be happy with a 38 sling knowing what you know vs. current package I have? Are you happy with yours?
|
Re: 38 slingshot info?
If you are going to run stock power such as 500 efi's you should be very pleased with the 38 Hustler. The 38 in the 80's will ride and handle awesome. To me there's no better all around boat than the Hustler Slingshot for the money. I have a friend with another 38 up here and he runs the crap out of it. He was going to sell it but then he decided to keep it being he liked it to much. They spend every other weekend on it too. Up here when I used to run my 38, we always ran with 2 42 Fountains and my buddies Slingshot. I must say though that the 42 Fountains have a great ride. I can convert my motors back to 500 efi's if desired.:D:D
Good luck on your search. Dan |

Re: 38 slingshot info?
Thank you both for taking the time to answer some of my questions. You guys are great!

Re: 38 slingshot info?
I have two good friends who both own 388 Slingshots. One has 575SCs and the other has 800HP big power blower motors. They are great boats and run very well with aforementioned power.
What's your price range? |

Runafever, 500 EFI's best we have seen on GPS 82-84 depending on conditions. We whippled in April 2006 and after a little tweaking best we have seen 97.8 GPS, half a bag of fuel three people spinning herring 5 blade 32's in at 5600-5700 rpm.
Fountains are great but to common. My wife, four daughters and myself absolutely love this boat.We are going into our fifth season with no complaints. You do have to learn to drive this beauty past the 94 mark with a little tab help. We cruise all day long 4500-4700 @ 80-85mph GPS.The Whipple's are great on fuel to. No complaints. |

Re: 38 slingshot info?
A good friend of mine is on his 3rd or 4th Hustler...I cant remember, they all run together..lol Anyway, he loves them and has upgraded every year and wouldnt change for anything.
His first was with 500's and the numbers stated earlier are correct. His newest has 950's with Arnenson ASD-6's, which is the most insane thing Ive ever seen... It will run 90 at 3800rpm, and we have no idea what WOT would do...it gets waayyyy to squirrely above 100 cause of the Arnesons. I would really be surprised if there was any other boat out there faster from 40 to 100, its absolutely incredible I rode in it at Smoke on the Water in 2006 and it was a rough day. I think we had 6' to 8's a lot of the day. The boat handled good around 80 in 4' to 6's, but it was beating us pretty good so we slowed it down. I agree with the people here, IMO,if I was going to choose between a 388 and a 38 Fountain, I'd go with the 388 |

Re: 38 slingshot info?
I agree with you Jeff, I think they were designed to run in the 90's max, and they do it VERY well...Im no expert on them, this is just what little time Ive been on it, but I know I like it better than the 38 beaker
Yes, that is the latest 388 that my buddy owns. Was that pic taken in NO?? |
Re: 38 slingshot info?
I believe the fastest 388 is Black Cloud. His is most likely the second though. That boat is sweet.
|
Re: 38 slingshot info?
The 388 was built to run max 90mph......they now change the bottom for higher speed boats....which eliminates the squilyness of it.

There strakes on the bottom of 2006 and up are solid, it can be cut out when the hull has big power. All the new 388's have the strakes on them ,if it will do 100plus there cutting the straks. Joe said they just did a 388 with 650hp arnisons, did 105mph.They cut the second strake on that one.Maybe it will be at Miami. He also said they did a 388 with the 700's no info on it though. He said the NEW 41 will be there. The older ones 2001-2005 the strakes are not filed youll have to build it up on the inside when cutting. I am guessing when you make this mod it would slow down the cruz speed ,maybe up to 90 something ,being its taking lift out of the bottom , But in larger power it settles it down above 100mph Theres one in NY I know of that been cut 98-99 model,Big power claims around 110? There another in KY thats been cut and changed over to arni, havent heard back on that one . I have a pick of the strake cut somewere |

Re: 38 slingshot info?
In the show, there will be a 625 Ilmor with the #7's. I don't know about a 650 hp package, but I certainly do not know everything.

What's the new 41??? We didn't go over to the factory this year, so I dont know what's been going on. I need some Slingshot shirts for Miami, so I'll ask them then. Our last ride of the season was in the Hustler and the acceleration of those whipples, never gets old!!!

Rob:drink: I'm readier than you think.:drink: Waiting on different props as well as Mastry to get over their and find someone to dial in his motors to make sure they are making full power. Presently they are not. Then on top of it someone wants the boat that saw it at Nortech. Jeff |
