Most carriers want to know your 5 year claim history but the claim only "counts against you" for 3 years. When I say "counts against you" I am referring to the loss of the loss free discount that most carriers offer.

How's this, owned boats all my life, 50+ yrs, last 3 have been 38 fountains and donzi all 100+ mph, never a claim, bought a 38 cat this summer and the ins. co. wanted me to take a cat driving course to the tune of $2500. Anybody heard of this. Needless to say I told them to kiss my ass after being insured with them for over 10 years.

I agree with the last comment by Tres. A high performance Cat in untrained hands is deadly. I am so glad I got the right training because a Cat is nothing like a V bottom nor is the top speed. You better know what your doing at 140+ mph and respect the machine or you're dead.

Hypothetical question here. Say you purchase a cat and run with no insurance for a couple of seasons (which isn't illegal if you don't owe anything). Now that you have a couple seasons under you belt, will your rate be less when you decide to insure it because of all the cat experience you now have????

Most carriers want to see that you've been insured, however, it's not necessarily a written guideline. They will require no loss statements before binding. They take actual years of ownership and operating experience.
BUT, running without insurance on a boat like that, or any boat for that matter, isn't a good idea.... the amount of personal liability exposure that is out there is far more than any average person could endure should something happen.
