Default non- marine related ins. question

i know this is not a marine type question, but i figgered maybe someone here is ins savvy enough to answer it. yesterday morning some SOB came down my side street in a 3/4 ton dodge van, hit 2 of my cars, and careened into a neighbor's garage. the maggot left the truck (engine running and trans in gear) and took off on foot- never to be seen. one (if not both of) of my cars is totalled. the truck was supposedly stolen from a nearby buisness (strange since the keys were in the ignition.) i have comprehensive ins on my cars, and my question is- who's insurance pays? i'm located in maryland if that matters. any help will be greatly appreciated. thanx, Rich.

In this situation, it is treated as a hit and run. Call your insurer and report it to them. They will cover your cars and then go after the registered owner of the vehicle and fight the battle from there. This would be covered under your collision coverage (not comprehensive). The insurance company will charge you your deductibles initially, but if they recover money from the other company, they will reimburse the deductibles to you at a later date.

thanks for the quick reply! i contacted the van's ins. co.- they said the van was reported stolen (well after the time of the crash) and therefore, they denied the claim. my ins. co. said my loss would be covered under my "uninsured motorist" coverage (i have no collision coverage- only comprehensive.) you were right, i'll have to pay a $250 deductible, but on EACH car (2 claims filed.) is this normal?? thanx, Rich.

As far as I know uninsured motorist coverage only covers bodily injury. Am I correct? I had a guy run a stop sign and do lots of damage to my truck. He had no license, nor insurance, and was from mexico. I only have liability on this vehicle since it is an old work truck. I did not realize I did nt have the uninsured motorist coverage. When I talked to my insurance company they told me it would of only helped if someone had been injured (i.e. for hospital bills, ect). They said it would not cover any damage to my vehicle.

If you carry comp or collision coverage, any physical damage to the vehicle (as it applies per comp or coll) would cover your vehicle regardless of fault.

Uninsured/underinsured is a liability coverage, yes.
