Joker Powerboats/CRC 611 Post Race Report: Long Beach, NY
The Joker Powerboats/CRC 611 team had a successful return to competition at this weekend’s event in Long Beach, Long Island. Starting from the outside position in an 8 boat fleet, the team quickly moved into second place before the first turn. While the waves were not what you would call big, the Atlantic was fairly choppy with unpredictable rogue waves thrown in just to keep it challenging. And it got challenging for the team on the first lap when a hydraulic ram for a trim tab blew out. After that, as the handling of the boat went away, the team managed to hold onto second place in the 32 mile, 5 lap event, but was unable to close on the eventual winners, Wazzup 2. “We had second place by a good margin and were forced to lie back due to the poor handling,” said Pete Smith. “We just couldn’t run fast enough to catch them with the broken trim tab.”
In an example of the sportsmanship that is a big part of the Offshore Powerboat Association, the team towed the winning boat 10 miles back to the pit area after their motor failed soon after taking the checkered.
All in all it was a very successful weekend for the Smith Brothers team as they continue to develop their new engine. The next event is Solomons Island, Maryland September 13-15.
