Re: 77 Starfire Freshening

Thanks Guys ,
She runs and handles great !
Power is around 650 Hp @ around 5500 RPM - She has gobs of torque down low and still pulls to 5900 RPM (Thanks to the Tyler Crocket head work ) In pleasure trim she turns a 28B1 like nothing , and in race trim a 25 Rev 4 .
Speeds are from 78 to 80 mph depending on the chop with a full tank of gas and wet exhaust . This 570CI runs a solid roller , sweet idle and tons of power up top . Not bad for a 6000 lb boat .
The Point race was cancelled due to fog so we didnt get to race her . Next race for us is in Maryland .

Re: 77 Starfire Freshening

Jerry, sounds like yu got the old girl dialed in real good.Never put together a 570 because i never needed more then a 540,but always wanted to,just to see what it would do in Vixen.Still thinking about it,so i have some questions.Did you use a tall deck or standard,if a standard what lenght rods did you use?Im taking it for granted you used a 4 an three eights stroke.I know they usually use a tall deck for a 570 but all i got is a short deck merlyn blk,to work with,so it will have to due. Have fun and be safe.

Re: 77 Starfire Freshening

Hi Mel ,
I had the short deck merli block from George , so I used it with a 4.620 bore and 4.25" stroke .
The cam is a mellow solid roller , 236/242 @ .050 with .680 lift . CMI tubes , 9.4:1 compression , wet tail pipes .
The heads are pretty trick and have the ports epoxied into oval ports with 300cc runners .
The torque is incredible and it winds up to 5900 RPM .
Mel , the short deck block is OK for 4.25" strokes - the rods were 6.385 (as i recall ) . All you have to do is bring your bore out to a 4.60" .
Albert on the Pantera board can help you in the power department as he has lots of experience with the big cube motors .
I hope this helps .
Oh yeah , I took the 12 " box off the boat - It runs very stable now - no tabs needed .

Re: 77 Starfire Freshening

Jerry, thanks for the comeback.Interesting combination of parts, specially the ovell ports with that bore size. That set back box really brought back some doubts i had when i was trying to figure out were i was going to set the drive on Vixen and if i wanted a set back.Back in 2000 when i put Vixen togeher there were two 27 sutphans racing 1 in p4 an 1 set up for fact.1 with a set back box, both owned by the same man. When i went to see Richy about some advice on were to set the X on Vixen he had the 27 with the box in his shop and said that as good as the p4 boat went was as bad as the one with the box went, and nobody wanted to push it past 60.so that made my mind up on the set back for Vixen.I knew the Mags were good straight hulls so if i didnt have the speed i could always go with more power and still have a good handling boat. Thanks again and be safe. Mel
