Re: question for the mag pros

Nocig,Sounds like your off to a good start.I cant tell you a whole lot,I dont know your set up,X dimension gear ratio prop size totel advance on the dist.type of ignition your running how much trim your using how much tab you use,all makes a big diff.I had Vixen out yesterday to run chase boat for a new boat being tested here in fort myers and i ran my 15.25x16 prop with my 540 mech eng.this is my hottest set up and built almost like yours. It will turn up 6200 at 85 gps,now if i put on my 15.25x28 prop she will turn 5400 at 79 gps,so you can see props make a big diff. How does it react if you hit the throttles at 30 mph,it should set you back in the seat or you got to much prop.As far as temp.goes i run 110-120 and oil pressure 70 to80 while iam running hard and 60 when i come off plane, but thats the way I like it. Re: question for the mag pros

the motor is rich as hell i know i can lean way more, but i am waiting for my tuning guy to come back in to town.....The boat was bought from a propeller builder and he has a bunch of numbers stamped in the prop..

I will take a picture of the numbers if ya guys want to know pitch,

One thing i will say is holy f%(* does that boat love ruff water, you could see the speedo jump as soon as i got in 3 footers, just chewed them up.

My timing isnt quite right yet either i know i can see an honest 82-85 with more tuning

Re: question for the mag pros

posting at the same time mel.....

Your right pins ya in the seat from 35-40 to about 70 then it is all in the drive trim... tuning guy said the same thing....(this winter you need more oil pressure 50 pounds is hoarse sheet)

Re: question for the mag pros

Re: question for the mag pros

Nocig, sounds like your having fun now.My props are both Bravo 1 four blade lab finnished,i had a hydro motive 15.5ox26 and wouldnt work at all and got rid of it.I only ever run one race with my 540 that was in 2002 in P4 and got a DQ and went back to the 502 an 509 engines in Vixen.I know 80-90 is a real rush in open boat, but things can happen so fast, and you cant do anything but ride it out.Have fun but keep it safe.I guess i sound like a old woman but i been their and i know that feeling when seconds seem like hours and your on your own. Re: question for the mag pros

Nocig,Sorry about that, but i would feel awful if anything went wrong after i went and said go with the biggest engine you can.Enough said about that, just dont forget some of the pointers i gave you.Now that prop is a 15an half diameter by 25 pitch, that was about right back when they used those drives but i would try a 15.25x26 bravo 1 4blade if i could borrow one from someone,in my book the 3 blade is outdated for your boat an power.I tried one on Vixen and didnt work anything like a 4 blade. Thought this was a good tread name to use. These are a dummy set of Lighting Headers to try for fit in my Sport. They are about 1/2" too wide at the elbows and do not clear the outside rim of the hatch opening. The engine hatch is about 3/4" thick there too and angles in a little, so they just do not fit. Any other manuf. that you guy's have had luck with that fit? I have Sm. Blk.s 450hp with pretty big cam. It would be great if the elbows would fit down under the hatch too... I guess this is why they made the Starfire. ... any help would be great...

nocigarette 05-04-2007 05:00 AM

i would try stainless marine gen 11......They are a lot more narrow in the body....Plus they can due anything with your tail pipes......Give them a call and ask for brownie....

Mag27 05-04-2007 10:27 AM

No Cig,did you ever get that new 540 in the water yet to see how she runs?I just got finished with Vixen, changed controles, new carpet, new seat bases, new exh.gaskets and a good tune up.Last time we were out she didnt seem like her old self, when dave started giving me a hard time with his Phantom i knew somthing wasnt right, and she idled like s--t too.Found the hold down bolt had gotten loose ,was running 28 totel instead of 38.Man is he in for a surprise on the next outting. If i could figure out how to post pics on this thing now id be all set. Mel

Nocig you are right, I called Eddie, Imco and Stainless today, Stainless has the most narrow manifold and a low elbow height too. Thanks to the great advise from Jan at Lightning Headers I am only out the shipping cost to trial fit a dummy set. I had no idea that option existed, wow was it worth it. I would be cutting into my Mag and making hatch mod's too if I would have just ordered the custom pipes based on transom measurements. Its too bad they don't fit, tubular headers would have looked great.

nocigarette 05-05-2007 05:51 AM

tudular headers will look grat but the just done last like stainless marine....It will be the last set you buy, plus the gen 111 make more power on the dyno than any tubulars..

Do you know anything about how IMCO performs or Eddie Marine ? I hear Stainless is a 2pc casting, but what is the Generation III? I looked at their website but must have missed the Gen III... I guess I can get an S pipe from them dry to the transom...

Good Luck on that run today, I am on my back in the half cabin wiring.
