yup that's what they are volvos. thoese are OLDDDDDDDDDDDDDD. i wouldn't daught it if their the original the boat came with in 74

The Sport is a 1973...not 74 as listed...and the drives are original 270 Volvos. They are painted black to make people think they are Merc's. Since you don't see eggshell grey outdrives on newer boats anymore, a new boater could be fooled and buy the boat...just cause they look new. It really is deceiving. That's probably why they are not mentiond on the equipment list.... like everything else is.

What drives would you prefer.... and why? And, how much are new/used ones going for?

Whats wrong w/ the volvo drives? were they bad?

And I'd replace w/ konrads, especially if the volvos had transmissions(about $11-12k ea w/o trannies).
Which would be alotta coin to put into that boat.
I'd run the volvos till they go, then replace.
If it ain't broke dont fix it.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Volvo drives...Volvo invented I/O's. And on top of that.... they invented the counter rotating "Duo-Prop" system too....which took them seven years to develop.

We've all been brainwashed with Mercury over the last twenty five years...and automaticaly think they're better than anything else, because Volvo never got into the high performance boat engine market like Mercury did. Even Merc has the "Duo-Prop" available, offering no-torque, for single engine boats...and they pay Volvo royalties for using it.

I have a 74 27' Sport for sale with original 280 Volvos and hydraulic trim...never had a problem. I'll say the same thing....run'em till they break...then replace them with whatever you like.

The volvo's are horsepower and hydrodynamically limited. My father had the first 20' Cigarette Don made it had a volvo drive. The drive failed, upper gear case. Volvo made a speedmaster foot as an option which helped blowout. They were good drives till about 400 hp. Our Magnum had TRS, which were huge drives compared to the Volvo 270 or 280.
