Maltese
Can someone post all the real specs on a mid-70's Maltese??
Were they Kevlar built?? Or standard glasss?? What drive packages were used?? I see both volvo's and TRS. Only small blocks?? I would imagine BBC's would be too heavy. Any out there with a recessed floor at the helm/passenger to increase the freeboard?? I have questions. |
I have some brochures with specs but I'd have to scan them. It looks like Magnum would build whatever you wanted.
|
My bud has his for sale in the classies.
Doesn't need much cosmetic work, and bbcs would sag her even more in the rear. |
I found the below on iboats, which is a little less than what I was looking for.
5200#'s sounds light for this size. Kevlar?? 1976 Magnum Marine 28 Maltese The 1976, 28 Maltese is a 27.5 foot inboard/outboard boat. The weight of the boat is 5200 lbs. which does not include passengers, aftermarket boating accessories, or fuel. While this sports cruiser does have a hull made of fiberglass, it is beneficial to keep the boat clean and dry by covering it properly while not in use. Good maintenance and care can help your vessel stay in good condition and have a higher value at resale. Applicable engine information has been included below since a boat needs reliable power. Information on this page is provided to you as a free service of iboats.com. Because this information has come from many sources we can not guarantee its accuracy. Even if this information is the same as the original factory specs, boats are sometimes modified. Thus, for safety and other reasons, it is a good idea to verify information here to make sure it matches up with your boat. Engine Information: This boat may have come with the following or other engines : (In the interest of safety, never exceed the manufacturer's maximum horsepower rating for your boat.) 500 hp with 2 engines ( 250 hp per engine) 560 hp with 2 engines ( 280 hp per engine) 600 hp with 2 engines ( 300 hp per engine) |
i doubt its kevlar. As a 76 its one of the last boats delivered by don, or 1st by ted.
Brownie was there during this time, and would know if kevlar was used. But 5200lbs... no way. |

This one's on ebay, a fixer uper bids at $3000.00 looks a little rough. Hence, all the questions. I've been e-mailing back and forth with the guy, and I'm on the bubble - $3000 won't get it, but it's reasonable. Motor's are toast. Need at least full rebuilds, if not just replaced. Exhaust is shot. Interior shot. TRS II drives - not necessarily a bad thing. I had a TRS in my single Baja 454, and loved it. So, what makes it a Maltese?? I've studied so many offshore boats, and want something a little unique and old school cool. Is it a Maltese because of the rounded fairing?? is that the difference?? I know I sound like I know nothing of the history of Magnum, but I do know a good bit, just never studied them as hard as some of the other classic boats (donzi, Cigarette, etc..). |
maltese: 28ft, a bit larger cabin, and a bit more freeboard.
more cruiser than the sport. but its not a cruiser. |

more cruiser than the sport. but its not a cruiser. I DO intend to overnight. I prefer a little bit more freeboard, I was even considering recessing the floor in the helm area's. I'm not looking for a race boat, but a Classic. It needs the lifeline put back on!! I'd never refer to it as a cruiser - certainly doesn't look like what I have in my mind as a cruiser. |

If you want more cabin than a sport but not ready for a sedan Mag, a Maltese is the ticket. One of the local Magnum old school racer's said the Maltese was faster than a sport, with same power in a race set up ? The bigest draw back to the Trs drive is the Trs trans, not as tuff as the BW 72 trans but if you keep the fluid cool & clean and dont over rev it they will hold up. If they have the electric shift change it to the mech linkage. My 9mm Mirage has them with big blocks and they still work well after 27 years. Good luck with ebay.
I'm not sure what this one has. |
24degrees - Thanks for more pics!! (BTW- love the name - 24degrees:D )

My old one had the BW velvet drive. And I loved it. Especially around the docks - very smooth in and out of gear.
I'm not sure what this one has. |

Most 1976 Mag's came with trs trans unless it was changed out, a Bw would move the motors forward some. I see that it has Hynautic steering thats a plus.

Thank you for the interest in my project - it helps me realize I'm not the only crazy one. I think I'm about to buy myself a second job that I don't get paid for, and spend money to do. I'm nervous as hell getting into this, and it's post like yours that push me on.
Yeah still fishing, but I've got a hook in it, and need to reel it in. We're really close. Talk me out of this!!! Or, talk me into it. I really want to do it. I just think I'm nuckin futz for doing this. Yet, I still wanna do it. |
Its all part of it, I have 3 corvetts and 3 boats, cant use but 1 at a time BUT YOU CAN KEEP TRYING !!!!!!!!!
|
Alright guys.
I had a sobering moment - and I have to walk away from this one. It's just more of a project than I'm ready for. NoCig - if you're still looking for a project, I'll give you the contact info. Helluva nice guy. I was just staring at the pictures last night for a few hours, and it's just too big of a project for my budget/space/time, and I can't give it the justice it deserves. |
Good move.......I always say a boat in good condition is still a project......:D
|
I second that emotion. WAY too much work unless journey is the destination.
|
Ya know bitting off more than ya can chew is fun.........Dont rule it out......That boat needs a good home, who cares if it takes ya ten years to finish it.......It will be even cooler in ten years because it will be a 40 year old bad arse boat instead of a 30yer...........
Thanks for the contact info offer........I want to due a twin small block catamaran next....... |

Thanks for the contact info offer........I want to due a twin small block catamaran next....... You're right, it does need a good home. That's why I thought of you. You did an incredible job on yours. I don't have a shop to take on a project this big. I've been divorced once, and don't want to go through that again - and I kinda like my wife alot:D If the boat sat in the backyard for ten years, I'd be living in it for five of them. I'm gonna keep shopping for a project, just one that doesn't need as much as this one. It could be a really nice boat - just gonna gonna take more money and time than I have |
It's like Clint Eastwood (Dirty Harry) says......"A man's got to know his limitations."
:D |
I agree, know your limitations.....Then when ya hit them buy better parts so you can exceed them...
