Hopefully this link works...... There is some wiring, plumbing, and upholstery work still to be done. Should be in the water this spring! |
Hotrod62, You are an artist. Great job. That boat is one of my favorites. I grew up a couple docks down from the powder keg in the early to late 70's. I would walk down the docks and just stand next to the keg and wonder why it never left the dock. They left it in the water year after year in the lagoons rotting away under willow trees. only saw it leave the dock once or twice. I remember looking into the water trying to see the drives through all the growth growing from the hull. In the lagoons there where only two performance boats back then. The Powder Keg and a boat called Fly United. Now there is twenty or thirty at a time.

Beautiful boat!
Thanks for sharing. Padraig |
Great job and thanks for sharing pictures. What did you paint the boat with? My sport is primed now on the deck. Trying to figure out the bottom. Previous paint looks like aw grip gone wrong.

That is a class act, great work..Very well done.
Good to see others are like minded when it comes to a classic rebuild. Kalaazar |
Good job ! Awesome boat

Whoa! WOW . . Between you and Kalaazar Magnum restorations have some high marks to shoot for . .
A few questions . . Seat bolster frames . . made by who???? Are these from Great Lakes Skipper? Rub rail . . .who makes this whole set up? Have you completed the exhaust? I presume you'll need to install hose over those ends and the "arched" SS is for water flow? Thank you! Great work! Congrats! |

Yes the frames are from great lakes skipper, they are SS and out of a smaller Baja. They fit the boat well since they are low, narrow, and simple looking. The rub rail I believe is from lewis Marine supply in ft lauderdale, it is a hard plastic capped with a SS insert. I am yet to finish the exhaust, the tips are some 4" Hardin marine and it is going to be tricky to make a quick "s" bend to drop down to them. The arched SS tab is for the rubber connection to maintain water flow. I searched hi-and low for a manifold setup that would allow me to run the factory flat hatch, those Hi-Tek manifolds did the trick. I was a bit skeptical as they are sold in Australia and made in China but they are actually a very high quality looking piece. I cut the flanges off and stood them up more and welded new flanges on to get the motors closer together. |
What are you using on the cockpit floor? Is that teak, or a composite material? Next time I'm in Racine I'm going to pick up a set of those bolster frames myself.

Actually i am going full sit down PPI style seats and a shifter/throttle center console with no door access to the cabin. More of a mini Gladiator sort of layout. This thing is incredible love the colors and the OEM hardware, the old school life line is a must. |

Skippy those are the exact bolsters and stands i tried to sell to you . . . . the exact same ones. I got them from Baja, came out of a twenty something.

Dave, Dont recall seeing any pictures of your 27 Magnum. Any threads on OSO?

Dave..............Honestly I don't remember, but if you say so. To think of all the mistaken decisions I've made recently concerning bolsters & bolster frames .......it figures!

Scippy,
As I recall you also have lowered the floor in your boat. I've been successful at lowering the floor in mine a complete 5 inches. To achieve that my floor intersects with the hull directly below the gunwale. I will be using the frames from Baja and great lakes skipper. I intend to build the bolsters with very minimal padding on the outside to keep them as narrow as possible. |

it is a daunting task to find a bolster that works in a Sport Mag, narrow cockpit and shallow freeboard make it tough. Thats why I'm going PPI full sit down, i just never saw any bolster that looked like you werent hangin out in the wind.
Got it like five or six years ago or so, theres a thread somewhere. I havnt done anything but round up parts, running Arnesons and LS's. Just about ready to start grinding/sanding. It is going to be a full sit down boat with console between the seats like a mini Gladiator. I have a twenty Cig to finish before i dig into this thing :D Dave, These Magnums are like the custom cycles of offshore. I like that Gladiator, Phantom look. I am doing a sit down 3 man bolster center steer with my sport. The main look I am aiming for though is to have the top of the bolster stay low profile, flush to the sides of the fairing. Also to have the engine hatch flush with the top of the back deck and end up at the back of the bolster. The rest of the hull and bow close to stock. My friend that I restore with is restoring two of the 20 Cig's. He just picked up the black one from Toledo. He put the Cig's in front of the Mag also. |

This one with orange interior is on Miami craigslist , looks like a decent job. The white one is mine from 1990 . It felt comfy and safe with 6" thick seat bottoms ( 3" soft foam + 3" high density foam ). Even though I like standing , Magnum stand up bolsters make you look and feel like your on a surfboard ! My seat bottoms only came forward about 12" so you could use your legs to plant yourself in to the bolster ( footrest at 45degree angle at cabin bulkhead ) .HAVE FUN ! |

I will also build an integrated rear bench and hatch that all swings up for easy engine access |
