1986 Magnum Marine 27 Center Console Build
#1
I posted build threads on previous Sonic, Velocity, and Spectre boats so I'll do the same with this 1986 Magnum Marine 27 I picked up in June. Per a Magnum Marine build sheet posted online, this appears to be one of only nine 27's ever built by the factory as a center console. The original invoice lists a P.O. box in Bogota, Columbia as the address for the buyer. One can only imagine what the boat was up to in late 1980's Miami. Maybe someone here knows Mr. Harry Beda.

Someone spent a lot of money on it back in 2023 doing all new tanks and hoses, new wiring, new electronics and stereo, Coosa flooring, Awl Grip paint, new upholstery, a Kevlar-reinforced transom and new 300R outboards with DTS controls and power steering. The engines only showed 95 hours when I bought it.

The boat didn't have a trailer. I had to get one made within a week to make the deal on the boat before the owner was off to the Bahamas for a month. Bluefin Trailers got the job done in only 2 days!

The boat didn't originally have a back seat. While the previous owner had the right idea when he built one, his use of wood was a big mistake as the seat was warped after less than a year. I rebuilt it with King Starboard, new legs and some additional hinges.

The engines were mounted all the way down when I got the boat and I could tell that wasn't necessary. I moved them all the way up and the handling felt great. Water pressure was 20 psi at WOT. I also gained about 3.5 MPH. Even all the way up, the prop shafts are still 3" below the hull. I don't know the top speed, yet. The boat came with full twin 100-gallon tanks which weighs well over 1,000 pounds. I need to burn some of this weight off to see how it will really run, but I'm hoping for mid to upper 70's. My real goal for this boat was something that could handle rough water and cruise at 50 MPH.

I like a paracord wrapped wheel on a CC. The boat also didn't have any way to adjust the engine trim separately, so I added a remote switch as well.

In order to use the boat in SW Florida, my pale skin needed some shade. It recently got a Concept-style arch with a red bimini that's hinged for low bridges or the garage.

Immediately following the arch installation, it got a new Sunbrella cover.

That's where I'm at as of today. My next priority is finding someone to build a windshield for the boat as this is the windiest ride I've ever owned. I've spoken with numerous shops on the gulf coast of Florida and none of them can handle the compound curve of the console. I found one place on the other side of the state that can do oven forming and say they'd be willing to give it a try. That may be my best bet.

That was a fantastic buy. A timeless classic turned into a tasteful resto-performance-boat.

P.S. It's impressive to see Kuwait order 20 Sedans for duty in their Coast Guard. D.S.
