28 maltese help

Freind of mine is going to look at a 1976 28. It is still owned by the original owners.
It will need some major refreshening and updating.

1. When he goes to look at it, are there any specific things he should look for? any weak points?

2. Does anyone have any pictures of the 28s that have been updated? so he can get some ideas?

Thanks for the help.

Re: 28 maltese help

There is a 28 for sale that has been updated on the Boat trader, nothing unusual to look for. Check stringers, bulkheads and transom for soft spots.

Just and educated guess but I would say around 6500 lbs.

Owner said 5000... sounds a bit light to me.
Is there a place where I could see a an origianl write up or brochure on this boat?

Re: 28 maltese help

With twin engines there is NO way it weighs 5000 pounds. A single engine big block in a 27 will still weigh more than 5000 pounds. You need to contact Evertt Sutton at Magnum. He will be able to send you all kinds of info and brochures on the boat. If you have the vin # he might even be able to tell you some history on it. They have a huge filing cabinet full of info on the magnums. He is a great guy to talk to. His number is (305) 931-4292.

I posted an ad I picked up on e-bay over on speedwake. Look under the dock area under magnums.

Re: 28 maltese help

I dontknow how to measure and set the x but that gearcase better be at least 4 inches below the bottom, cause i did one with the centerline of the propshaft even with the bottom and the prop 48 inches from the transom, the hull would lift in the front,it was a sedan,a little heavier in the front, itwent 70 with 680 horsepower at 5700 rpm with a sternpower speedmaster outdrive and bw 72 tranny. there were no front lift props for that drive, which took speedy 3 props. i was alittle dissapointed in the performance after all the work i did converting from twins to a single,so itook it apart, bought a 30 velocity with tripple mercs and have alot of fun with it!!! good luck tripps
