From what I hear only 3 were made and they were really flighty, good for small water but not ocean. But damn it looks bad azzzz! |

I have worked on that cat or one just like it. It ended up in chicago and had a trick paint job over the black, bubbles and ugly birthday party design. The boat is an active cat Built by MIDNITE . It was built light and the deck had delamination problems with giant blisters all over the deck. I put a partial floor in the boat and yellow pirelli flooring. The four outboards on the back never ran very long because the center two would blow because of no water pressure I tried to talk him into a water tank style pick ups but all the owner wanted ,was to look cool. I think it saw almost 80mph once for a couple of seconds. Last I heard it was abandoned in some marina and in very rough shape. Wasn't worth even attemping to repair. Maybe it will end up as an open fish. I think it was built as a movie boat for that made for tv movie thunder row.

I cast my vote for the 1980's as the decade of the 20th century!!!!

I am such a fan of the show that after 24 years my dream finally came true and I now own the Stinger 390X with the paint scheme of the "Miami Vice Edition" of that boat.

Watching those vids makes me understand what was missing from the movie. They never seemed like friends. Partners sure, but not friends. In the TV series you knew they were truly friends, not just working together.

Didnt the boat in season one had a different paint sceam but same colors, and the boat didnt have a fiberglass molded in swim platfrom?
With that being said Ive been looking for the hull number of the orginal Chris Craft stinger from the show, only reason im after that is my dad has a Chris craft stinger same paint sceam but with new colors, had a radar arch and side buy side seating for drive and co-pilot. Now the story on my dads boat was it was sent back to Chris Craft in 1987 and had the paint colors changed from the Same Miami vice colors to black gray and silver. the factory then removed the radar arch and split up the seats. still has the repair spots in the floor and where the radar arch was mounted. So i think he actually owns the real miami vice boat. but... if anyone else knows anything about this boat let me know? Being 22 now and the show being replayed on Sluth its a great show but the family is really into boat and growing up around all the go fast boats. so Dad has the Chris Craft Stinger, Uncle has a Cig. Cafe racer, and I have a Checkmate Sprotfire looking to upgrade to a 28ft Pantera, Oh and Step dad was the Real life Don Johnson, In the mid 80s He Worked for the Detroit Police officer, He had a 87 Wellcraft "38 special" which was the same as the KV boats but not in the miami vice colors. also had a 1977 Porshe 930 turbo and a 944, |
Your step dad sounds pretty cool.
You'll like the Pantera. Good luck on getting that. :) |

Great video and fantastic boat. That was the best show on TV at the time.
Boats, Hot women and Florida... What a combination! |
[QUOTE=slpcamaross97;2656898]Didnt the boat in season one had a different paint sceam but same colors, and the boat didnt have a fiberglass molded in swim platfrom?
QUOTE] Your partly correct... The boat(s) in season one were exactly that paint scheme however the race boat did NOT have a swim platform and also had a solid radar arch where mine is split on the sides. Here is the story I have been told (don't know how accurate it is?) Murry (Chris Craft) built 201 boats that year in many configurations. They made twelve in the "Miami Vice" format, although they did not get that "tag" until after the show aired. Of the original twelve units, two were leased to Universal studios for the filming of season one and two and the other ten went into public hands. One of the two leased boats had the power package with the 1171 blowers on a pair of 570's I beleive??? This was apparently the boat used in the episode "The Great McCarthy" (the boat race for the MV fans) If you look very carefully in the latter part of the race when they get back into the channel the Carey and the Stinger are neck and neck, and the camera boat has the teak windshield on the port side showing for only a mere second or two, so you can tell it is the exact twin boat! This twin boat apparently is in Ottawa Ontario with all the holes filled in on the top of the deck where the cameras were mounted. It was a stock CC unit and was not hot rodded as the other boat was. That unit was used for all the closeups of Don Johnson and Philip Micheal Thomas and all other camera shots requiring the actors to be on the boat. From what I understand right at the end of season two Chris Craft dropped the ball and Wellcraft glahmed in with the KV offering the Florida Colour Schemes which the producers liked. Back to the original season one CC's. Mine is boat number #102 of the years production and the paint is original. If you watch the DVD's of MV you will notice the paint scheme is the same. (to answer your question regarding that) To add more confusion to this Miami vice issue, they actually used a 1984 Stinger in the pilot episode the "Tubbs stole" and it was a plain white boat with the word "Stinger" written down the side. They did not pick up the white with blue stripes until the series was picked up by NBC and they signed for more episodes. So actually....there have been three boats used in the series! The actual original boat is in pretty rough shape (if it is actually the real one?) as I have seen pictures of it and it has fading bottom paint and an absolutely aweful interior? It has seen some aging for sure? It has been rumored to be in Florida and others say Texas yet others say CT. The answer lies to the owner if he shows himself?:Whatever: Now you can tell your friends all of this useless trivia...... |
Miami Vice Forever!!!!!!!!
|
I am not shure how thru this is , but in germany about 4-5 years back was a guy that claimed he has the original MIAMI VICE Chriscraft.
It was for sale and he had all the paperwork for it to proof the origin, plus a statement from chriscraft and a signiture from DJ. But like i said , i do not know how thru this is/or was ?! I just think its cool. Wonder what DJ does today, would love to give him a ride in my boat. LOL |
I just wanted to say what a great thread, I got into powerboating because of Miami Vice as well and I always try and catch the re-runs when they are on TV.

Actually the Chris Craft was swapped for the Scarab at the end of season one. What I heard was that Chris Craft wanted NBC to pay for the boats again whereas Wellcraft gave them the boats as a promotional tool. It was a great move on Wellcraft's part and really propelled the Scarab name to the top of the performance boat heap.

Nice video there "Sea-Dated"
I don't mean to pick at it, but the actual video did not have Sonny and Caroline in it, as it was Tubbs hearing "Voices" of revenge for his brothers death in NY. Russ Ballard also re-wrote the beginning of the song for the video (I know this as I have the original copy of the MTV video):party-smiley-004: Anyway enough about that as it is a great montage of stuff related to Miami Vice............. One neat little tid-bit of trivia that you may like to check out is in season one in the episode "Calderone's Return" where these boat sequences were actually shot out in th Ocean they were heading into the sunset (just like a cowboy I suppose?) Well, on the way back from the Bahamas when all was done at the end of the episode, you see the boat heading back to Miami.........or so you think. If you look real close you can see Sonny driving the boat on the wrong side!!! WTF? What they did was reverse the film backwards and play it so it looked like the boat was heading the other direction but actually it was the original film footage... :food-smiley-007: hahahahaha - I know many of you are out the door heading to Blockbuster to rent season one to see for yourselves! |

I was also inspired by MV so I started small and worked my way up over the last 20 years or so. I have been very "brand loyal" and had a Chris Craft 210, 230, 245, 260 and finally my dream boat the 390X. Call me crazy but I have all five seasons on DVD. Thank goodness for DVD's ...............:food-smiley-007: |

Congrats on the 390X... I too fell in love with that boat from watching the show. You have an extremely cool boat and a piece of 80s Americana as far as I'm concerned. I'm thinking of making a trip far north, just to see if I can convince you to give me a ride... That would literally be a dream come true!!! Take care of that bad-boy... - Chris
I hang around a bunch of other guys with go-fasts so we can have a hell of a raft up! One of my buddies owns a Fountain and the other a Profile...just to name a few. Lots of fast boats to go for a ride in on a nice sunny day. Speaking of "Americana", I went to Toronto Island for a couple of days this past July and hung out at the Island resort hotspots. You would not believe how many people recognise the boat!!! Young and old alike?!? I get compliments everywhere I go. I went in the Thousand Island Poker Run but navigated for my friend in his Profile. At the big dinner galla I was talking to people and they all tried to convince me to bring the boat out next year for the event ...even if I don't race it. I will definitely bring it next year, but I am only going to run it from Kingston to Brockville and back and leave out the rest of the run. In all honesty my boat is too slow for that event, but everyone thought it would be "uber cool" if I show up with it, as it is the biggest Poker Run in all of North America. Reggie Fountain himself was there in person! Anyway I can't compete with 120mph boats, so I'll just be a cruiser! |

Well Chris, if you ever come to Niagara for a holiday I'm only a ten minute drive from the Honeymoon City. I am right on Lake Ontario at the St.Catharines Marina and you are VERY welcome to pop by anytime next summer for a ride. I would be happy to take you and your wife (girlfriend...or both) out for a ride anytime. I live right at the Marina in the summer months.

I will come out and run with you guys. All black Pantera 28 F1. We are probably hitting up Baranga's this weekend running across from Toronto. |
Note that "Expressly built for DJ" is spelled wrong, not too mention one of those pictures is of a boat based in Ohio.
--I'm JUST SAYING--- Come on over to the Scarab section as we have several "Miami Vice Edition" 38KV's and ONE we know 100% that was one of the camera boats. |
