Organized Down River Run - Potomac

I feel like a lot of us Potomac boaters get stuck in the Gilligans/Tims area (I know I did). Late last season I was making a lot of runs to Cobb Island and Coles Point and really enjoyed it. Anyone interested in perhaps doing a day run down that way, or an overnight down that way? Non holiday, non poker run weekend? River is very nice down there and very laid back.

Potomac Fever 03-26-2011 03:02 PM

im in!

Dave M 03-26-2011 03:41 PM

I'm in too! I'm all over the river(s) and bay. St. Clements, Tall Timbers, St. George Is. are a few others. I like to head north too, National Harbor, Old Town, G-Town, Maine Ave. :drink:

Jpzaluski 03-26-2011 05:41 PM

Love the up north run too. Bill with the 45 Sonic put together a real nice trip up north at the end of last season. Let's all pick some dates and get this on our calendars. Any ideas on dates, stops? South of the 301 we have Cobb Island, Colonial Beach, Cobb Island, Coles Pointe... anything else notable?

Brian C 03-26-2011 08:44 PM

Good luck finding a group to commit to a overnight trip, never worked for me but maybe you'll have better luck and I'll be glad to join in.

45sonic 03-27-2011 09:28 AM

Fitzies, Tall Timbers, Kinsale, St Mary's Yacht Center (Dennis Pt Marina), Spinnakers at Pt Lookout, to add a few more

We are wanting to go to Tangier Isl and Tides Inn on the Rappahanock as well as some other trips plus poker runs this year. We will keep everyone informed as the more the merrier.

And the north run to DC will be held again this year just not on OC's bike weekend, whenever that is :)

We have a great beach at the mouth of the Potomac where we hang out, deep water right up to the beach. If you make it that far let's hook up.

We plan to run up your way more this summer:drink:

Pt Lookout State Park has a nice 1/2 mile beach near the mouth of the Potomac that you can get close enough to drop anchor and wade in. There is no park road access to that beach, so perfect for a group of boats. The park marina is just behind the beach for snacks, bathrooms, or gas (and boat ramps)...

I spent the night in that harbor many yrs. ago. We stayed tied up to the campground docks. Nice diocks, showers, etc.

Jpzaluski 03-27-2011 01:56 PM

Let's put it together here then. No better people to make up the run then the people attending. Assuming we'll start the run around Tims/Gilligans (so we can collect the northerners)... what would you guys propose as some stops? Everyone want a long day trip or an overnight? Let's hear it. We'll get it organized and get a date together. I'm easy going, down for anything. Just like to cruise at a comfortable pace, stop at a spot for a while, then move on when everyones ready. No stress, no to the minute schedule. You guys fill in the blanks.

frisky 03-27-2011 06:27 PM

I'm in . Could hit Kinsale Va. They got the best pizza around plus Chuckles would kill me if i didn't do the run.

chuckels 03-27-2011 09:27 PM

kims riding me , i mean with me :lolhit:

Beak Boater 03-28-2011 06:31 AM

Sounds like a plan. We did a run like that overnite to Solomons. Left Gilligan's went to Kinsale for lunch and went around to Solomons.
A couple of things to consider. With all the different sizes of boats, water conditions can take all the fun out of the ride if it gets rough. The south end of the Potomac can be a rough ride. but thats the chance you take to do it. Going north to G-Town, or Alexandria, the water is never going to get so rough to prevent anyone from doing the run. I wonder how they would like to see this group rafted off the wall at G-Town?

45SS 03-28-2011 06:39 AM

We rafted up about eight deep last year. We had a good reception, stayed about two to three hours. Then back to Old Town to stay the night. We had a great time.

Jpzaluski 03-28-2011 06:54 AM

Randy I went to Georgetown quite a bit last year, and like Bill said, even with a group of boats we had no troubles.

Jpzaluski 03-28-2011 07:49 AM

Seems like we have some interest... I guess for the first order of business, who wants to overnight and who wants a day trip? I've never been to Kinsale... so I'm not sure what they have to offer as far as slip space (hopefully someone can elaborate). I know that Coles Point has a good number of slips, albeit some are small, but they do have shore power, etc.

Dave M 03-28-2011 08:13 AM

I like going up North in the spring or fall when it's not too hot. I NEVER swim north of Ft. Washington.

I'm probably more open to day trips. Most of the time I have my kids with me and try to limit their exposure to certain things.

Anybody else boat with kids?

Shah Mat 03-28-2011 09:59 AM

Me and two other boating couples (not on OSO) do overnight runs below 301 all the time. Kinsale, Fitzies, Coles Point, Tall Timbers etc. It's like camping trips on the water. Fri afternoon thru Sunday usually. Since most places have a picnic area, we coordinate with each other on food and drinks and have a huge barbeque/dinner buffet each night. Sometimes we'll, eat at the marina restaurant one night and grill out the other. Either way we can enjoy the night life and stumble back to the boat afterward and hit the cabin.

Kinsale usually has enough dock space. Coles Point Poker run ran in their with 20-25 boats. The resturant can be hit or miss, as far as if its open. Would have to get a date and call ahead to check.
Anyone ever get stopped going to G-Town looking for safe boating course documentation? Got mine online, but have never heard anyone getting stopped. Was told it could be a big fine, if you dont have it.

Kinsale is nice.... They have a pool and a screened in picnic area. Makes it nice to lounge around all day on those real hot summer weekends. Plenty of slips, the restaurant has GREAT food, and occasionally have some sort of evening entertainment at the outside bar. It's a long ride from 301 and like Randy said, it can get bumpy that far down the river.

In my opinion, Coles Point has gone downhill in the last few years. The docks are falling apart, the food and service is not so good, and the last time we went there the night entertainment attracted a huge local crowd that wasn't fun. The parking lot was full of cars with 20" wheels w/spinner hubcaps and neon lights underneath. The place was packed. Good for business I guess, not fun for boaters.

I've been going up there a few times a yr. for 15+ yrs and NEVER got stopped. I always see CG and DCPD boats too. I have a CGA safety card anyway.

Jpzaluski 03-30-2011 07:43 AM

Yeah... I shoulda said that from the beginning. Hanging out with me is not required, so you're safe Gump

offshoredrillin 03-30-2011 07:59 AM

i'm in for something like this.

Jpzaluski 03-30-2011 01:29 PM

Let's try to make the schedule for starters...

1) Meet Tims/Fairview area for the northern boaters, etc.
2) Gilligans - Pick up/Meet additional boats
3) Meet Colonial Beach boaters out front of Hightide (if there is anyone putting in over there), if not we don't have to make that stop
4) Lunch at Cobb Island
5) Afternoon stop at AC @ Coles Pointe???
6) Evening in Kinsale. Get there early enough so that we could grab some dinner and if some didn't want to stay overnight they could head back. If not slips for overnight there.

Any additions, subtractions, suggestions? I'm just throwing this out there.

Potomac Fever 03-30-2011 02:48 PM

#5 Go to Tall Timbers for a couple of Rick's Bloody Mary's instead of AC's
But doesn't matter I'll roll where you guys roll

Jpzaluski 03-30-2011 04:14 PM

I'm all for Tall Timbers... didn't even think about that. And as said before... AC's is nothing to "rave" about.

chuckels 03-30-2011 05:33 PM

fitzies

Potomac Fever 03-30-2011 06:43 PM

Fitzies has some great crab cakes, HMMMMM Bloody Marys.....
hell stop at both, who's in a hurry:drink:

chuckels 03-30-2011 07:47 PM

45sonic 03-30-2011 08:24 PM

NOW the all important question. WHEN?????

Jason and I are trying to get an idea of when we could do this and not interfere with other runs in or out of the area. We are open to suggestions. I am trying to throw out a few from my side here shortly.
