A West Virginia couple's vacation at Monroe Bay Campground near Colonial Beach ended in a tragic boating crash yesterday.
Lyle Hartman and his wife, Margaret, were boating on Monroe Bay when another boat crashed into them. The second boat became airborne and landed on the Hartmans' boat, said John Bull, spokesman for the Virginia Marine Resources Police.
The incident happened about 4 p.m. Lyle Hartman was piloting his boat, and another boat was trailing them, Bull said.
A jet ski appeared, and Hartman slowed "fairly quickly and dramatically," but the second boat did not, Bull said.
The second boat ran over the Hartmans' vessel, killing 53-year-old Margaret Hartman and seriously injuring her husband, Bull said.
Lyle Hartman, who suffered head injuries, was taken to Mary Washington Hospital. No one else was injured in the crash. No charges have been filed.
"We haven't seen anything like this in quite some time," Bull said.
Russell Gouldman, whose family owns Monroe Bay Campground, said in a telephone interview last night that he saw the two capsized boats in the bay after the crash. He also was told that a visitor to his campground had been killed.
The Hartmans' family has been notified, Bull said.
The Virginia Marine Resources Police crash team is investigating the incident.

Our prayers go out to the family's. Thats terrible.
I have noticed an absence of police or marine police presence around Fairview and Port Tobacco. Dont know where they are, but while anchored at Fairview, this weekend, on several occasions, PWC's got on plane while still in between
the anchored boats and very close to folks in the water. One was pulling children on a tube, trying to weave between the anchored boats.
Its not just PWC's, was floating at Gilligans's and 24 foot boat came out of the slip and hammered it to get on plane 10 feet out of the slip, then flipped everyone on the pier the bird, that was yelling at them to slow down.
A little education about the water go's a long way to keeping folks safe.

Heard about this from Charles Co officers on the water @ Gilligan's on Sunday.
Jetski owners REALLY need to learn how to operate their vessels in a whole lot safer way than some of the ones I've witessed recently.
Hey Randy, you didn't see the guy and his wife come into Gilligans Sun afternoon. Barely missed the Searay then bounced off a Wellcraft tied side to next to us, ran into the dock and ended up tying side to taking up two back in slips.
