DC Fun Run 2011

OK, I want to put this out there for some input on when to plan this event.

I usually plan for mid Sept but have found the OC Bike Week draws people away. We always have a great time and want to have as many boats/people attend as possible.

SO .......

Due to conflicting other events and Bike Week I can plan to do this run on August 27 (which may be too soon after Patti has surgery) or on September 17 (which is OC Bike Weekend).

Thoughts and opinions please

Jpzaluski 08-03-2011 01:21 PM

Bill, I vote for the later date. I prefer letting it cool off a little for that run... since taking dips in the Anacostia or upper Potomac isn't exactly on my short list.

45SS 08-03-2011 02:42 PM

Bill a later date is fine with me. Like Jason said, swimming isn't safe until you get to Three Sisters. If we choose to stay in Old Town (which I will) later is better, some of the people that have slips up there start to pull their boats.

seltzer 08-04-2011 12:12 AM

Early date for me. Ill be on the back of Randy's Hog in OC

So u like riding Randys hog now ?

45Tripps 08-09-2011 04:32 PM

Any ramps down that way that can handle the 45 for launching/retreiving that is also safe for the tow vehicle/trailer instead of comming down by water ? Sounds like this may be a good event and sites to take in.

45SS 08-09-2011 08:48 PM

Where are you coming from.

45Tripps 08-10-2011 08:14 AM

Annapolis- Home Port.

45sonic 08-10-2011 05:02 PM

45Tripps,

I would probably suggest Goose Bay Marina as your best bet

Beak Boater 08-11-2011 05:50 AM

Yep.....Pomfret engine shop. Right next to Hunt's Tavern

45Tripps 08-11-2011 07:44 AM

Thanks for the info. Looks like a nice place.

45sonic 08-11-2011 08:48 AM

OK

Date is Sept 17. Details are as follows:

Meet up Tim's II Fairview 11:00
Run up to Tim's 1 arrive 11:30 or so
Leave Tim's 1 between 2:00 and 3:00 or so
Arrive Old Town Alexandria by 4:00 or so.
Tie up get slip assignments, then maybe or not head up to Georgetown "The Wall", go over to National Harbor, whatever we feel like doing or not doing

Dinner to be decided, Lighthorse last time was a great choice.

Then, well you figure it out.

This is a non sponsored fun run for those of us that want to show off our boats to the northern Potomac and have a great time with friends and hopefully meet some new ones. All are welcome.

45Tripps 08-11-2011 03:12 PM

How is the Chart House Restaurant by the marina ?

45SS 08-11-2011 08:00 PM

Not your best choice by far, Old Town Alexandria has some great places to eat. From fine dining to pizza. I have been many times as 45 Sonic has, we can point you in the right direction. Old Town also has a free trolley with great A/C. With a $10.00 refundable deposit, you get very nice bathrooms. Great night life on the docks, and they close the docks to the general public at 10.00 PM, but it is wide open to slip holders.

45Tripps 08-12-2011 01:14 PM

Good Info, Thanks. I know the Chart House in other locations are hit or miss.

I'm going to make this if it kills me. I boat broke the first time out this summer and it's still in the shop but will be out and working by the end of August. I boated down that way some last summer and it was nice. Would be fun to meet up with some others down that way.

Jpzaluski 09-11-2011 12:30 AM

Anyone gotten slips yet? What dock?

Dave M 09-12-2011 07:08 AM

Was anybody out on the Potomac this past weekend? I'm wondering how bad is the debris?

I have a few hours to kill today, but don't want to tear up my boat either.

Jpzaluski 09-12-2011 08:10 AM

DaveM: Take it from me... its NOT worth it. I went out yesterday. Left Aquia Creek and headed to Tim's. Got in the main river and didn't see a thing. I thought man this is perfect. Left Tim's headed for Gilligans. No sooner did I get on plane I found myself in a MASSIVE float of logs, debris, lumber, boxes, shelves, you name it. Took me 30 minutes to idle to the MD side. At that time I had to get in the water, defoul both drives, and made it to Gilligans. On the way home ran into another HUGE float in front of Aquia. This one had some trees 24"-36" around, large logs, etc. Same story again. The rivers passable, but no fun.

Thanks for the report. I figured as much so I decided to go to work and save my vacation time.

Jason.....I am sorry, was getting the information from someone who lives on the water. He also went out, ran into the trash float. Bruce called me to warn me, and I sent you a message asap, but I guess you were already out. I kind of figured that their would be some trash on the river some where.

seltzer 09-12-2011 01:48 PM

Hmmm maybe i should take the plastic boat and check north of the power lines. I feel its my duty.

Jpzaluski 09-12-2011 06:00 PM

It is your duty.

45SS 09-12-2011 07:44 PM

Check out this satellite photo of the bay and the Potomac river. This is whats headed our way.
Click on the map and enlarge it and look at the Potomac river, its just getting down around Fairview now. For the bay its almost down to Solomons Island. Not Good!!

Just like the Appamatox in Richmond. minus the debris

45sonic 09-15-2011 07:47 AM

Ok, everyone.

Due to circumstances out of my control I am left to advise those that want to do this run the following:

1. I will NOT be attending by boat. I will meet everyone at Tims 1 in Dumfries by car. Say around 12:00 or so !!!
2. As far as debris, trash, and whatever else is floating in the river I am leaving the run north up to those that are coming by boat.
3. If there are those that still want to head north I will meet you all at Old Town later in the day.
4. If we have decide to just hang at Tims 1 for the day, that's cool too.

Let's be safe and smart in our decisions and see what comes our way on Saturday.

Dave M 09-15-2011 09:03 AM

How is the river down south of the 301 bridge?

We went out last Sat afternoon/evening to Colonial Beach from Gilligan's. Saw some smaller debris and dirty water.
Not much more than ordinary or for concern. Now a week later I'm sure some of what was up north has made it down to our area, but don't know first hand.

But if you go to Gilligans watch out for the palm tree on the north side of the dock and keep an eye on your depth on that side too. The creek washed away the end of the "island" and deposited a lot of it behind the lifts.

Jpzaluski 09-15-2011 10:26 AM

I'm still going, and I will be sticking to the original schedule for anyone that wants to tag along. I'll see everyone at Tim's II. My cell is 540-273-0669 for anyone that needs it.

I honestly think the river is cleared up just fine.

Dave M 09-15-2011 01:21 PM

I was down by the river in Ft. Washington a few hours ago. The tide was going out fast and there was a pretty steady flow of junk in the water. Keep your eyes open!

With the props you are running, if you hit something it might make them look better.:evilb::drink::evilb:

Boater8987 09-15-2011 05:50 PM

I was out on the Potomac at Tim's 1 and 2 yesterday. Trash was everywhere between and at both places.

Jpzaluski 09-16-2011 09:32 PM

I may forgo the Tim's II stop and head straight to Tim's I as it's in the opposite direction for me. I'm not sure if anyone was planning on meeting down at Tim's II, as it seems like everyone is meeting at Tim's I. If anyone would like me to meet them at Tim's II however, I'd be glad to do so, just give me a call 540-273-0669
