Chesapeake Bay

We will probably be hanging out around Still Pond Saturday and maybe Joel's or Tolchester late in the afternoon if anyone is around.

Yellow & Orange 42' Fountain

Would love to meet up, still have yet to explore out that way. Haven't been to either of those places either. The farthest we've gone past Chesapeake city is elk river. Unfortunately, we can't make it out Saturday and are hoping to get out Sunday. I'd love to meet up with some folks on here at some point! Maybe I can talk the wife into skipping Saturday plans to join you. :)

Black Baja 07-15-2016 03:10 PM

Might be at still pond tomorrow in an almost 35' Fountain Miss Demeanor.

myfirsttwins 07-16-2016 07:41 AM

Well, the wife didn't buy in, off to run our errands and chores for the day, haha. Enjoy the day out there. Weather looks great!

badmonkey 07-16-2016 08:48 AM

Have to attend wedding today....we will be out on the water tomorrow...if anyone is out and about.

myfirsttwins 07-16-2016 11:10 AM

We will be out tomorrow, planning to start at chesapeake inn for lunch and see what's going on from there.

If anyone ever heads down towards Cambridge or wants to meet around Kent Island, give me a holler.

So, long story short had an issue last weekend that cost me time and $$ on the boat. Either way it's back up and running, and got a chance to take it out yesterday. Overall ran well, made it down to Joel's just to check out the trip. Couple questions for you all though. Not knowing the waters, we kept pretty close to the channel from elk river down. Took about 40 mins from Chesapeake Inn to where we turned off the channel to head towards Joels. We averaged 35-40 mph. Does this seem right for other folks that have made the trip? Is there any place along the waters to watch out for, or are safe to travel farther off the channel? We did notice some larger fishing boats running much closer to shore than us.

One thing we noticed is the water in general has a variety of currents and rouge wakes. Part of what kept our speeds down a bit besides not knowing the waters. A question did come up about our size boat traveling in that area. Its a heavier hull for sure, but nothing like the larger fishers/cruisers we saw and not really long enough to take some of the beatings from the wake. I'd be OK with them but the wife and kids not so much. Honest feedback here, is the 280 sport too small to be trying to get up and down that area on a weekend (more traffic, more wake, etc)?

Last question, not ever having anchored to the floating ball tie-offs they have at Joels, how does that work? Obv the dock isn't for docking there (may drop passenger drop off?) so I assume you tie off to the anchor balls and swim/walk in to the shore? Any insight on that would be great.

Twins....I would say 40min is about average for 30-40mph. Its a fairly straight shot from the Inn so no real place I could see you "losing time"...the common areas for rouge waves tend to be around the Bohemia River entrance, Susquehanna Flats/North East River, Elk River and Sassafrass River entrance. Outside of that - its normal upper bay traffic and wave action. Be cautious around "Crystal Beach" area just South of the Bohemia River because lots of people tend to water ski, tube and basically do circles for no reason in the middle of the channel - had enough close calls in that area over the years to bring my sticks back when I pass the Bohemia. Your 28ft boat is fine for that trip - I did it in a 22zx last year with no issues. Just watch the weather closely. We were rafted up at Joel's on Saturday the 16th - then that massive wall of weather started over on the Western Shore. We along with quite a few others split quick and outran the weather. If you do not have a boat capable of speed - prepare accordingly and have a plan for anchorage if weather blows up quick. The basin at Joel's is fine for bad weather and if 30-40mph is your top end....your not going to find any safe haven further North of there without having substantial time to make it. If you see me out come say hello.

myfirsttwins 07-27-2016 11:06 AM

Ok, thanks for the info. I agree, that is where we saw the most rouge waves as well. Something more to get used to as we make the trip more often. Ideally, I'd like to get the cruise speed up some more, but we have some other issues with the boat we are sorting out. On the way home that day we were able to run approx. 50 cruising which was better.

I'll def stop by and say hi if we see you out. I've been hoping to meet up with other power boaters in the area. Right now we just go out by ourselves and stick to places we know.

We were coming down the bay and saw the storm. We ducked into Fairlee also and tied up to the fuel dock to wait out the storm. The cutness of my wife gained us access into another couples (complete, but friendly strangers) sedan style boat with snacks, a/c & cable tv until the storm passed.

Looks like Sunday will be the better of the two days this weekend.

ShootinRopes35z 07-29-2016 09:50 AM

My MILF has gained us entry in similar situations.

I don't know about this weekend.....I am hoping for Sunday at this point but I wont count on it until less than 24hrs out. This time of year the weather flips around so quickly.

We stayed in PA - weather looked too iffy to bother driving South. Besides, I just had it detailed last week - I wanted that NEW CAR shine for at least another week. lol

mummaiv 08-01-2016 01:24 PM

You should plan on the poker run this Saturday leaving from Red Eyes.

Nah, I have plans this weekend elsewhere. I will be back out next weekend (8/13). Have fun this weekend and be safe.

myfirsttwins 08-02-2016 09:58 AM

What poker run is this weekend? I might be able to talk a buddy into joining me in my boat. Wife will have to watch the kids since our built in babysitters (i.e. parents) are away this weekend. We may also be out the 13th, have to see what the weather looks like and what the schedule looks like, but I think right now its free that weekend.

Off topic, and a long shot at best...BUT is anyone familiar with this 33ZX 496ho MD Registration? It came from Maryland, went to NY, and my friend is looking at buying it and bringing it back to MD later this week. Just wondering if anyone knows this boat or has any info on it?

Looks like a great poker run, sadly my boat isn't big enough to run in those waters. We tend to stay at the north end of the bay, middle river is as far down as we have gone. Looking forward to joining a run or two though. Never had a change to participate in the past, but have seen a lot in the bay area!

mummaiv 08-03-2016 02:03 PM

If you come to Middle River - red eyes is only 20 more minutes...

myfirsttwins 08-04-2016 07:13 AM

Hmm, interesting. I've heard that anything south of Middle river should really be in a 35' or more if you don't want to get beat to death or can't wait for that "perfect day" weather wise. Something to consider for sure, looks like a good event!

I run our from the South river in a 31' and its fine. Anything over 30' is just my opinion. South of the bay bridge the chop changes sometimes right at the bridge. I never really understood it, but its how it is. I've been out in some pretty nasty stuff. I try to avoid the real bad days, but sometimes it hits and you don't know its coming. I know a couple occasions that were supposed to be no more than 2' chop, but coming back weather changed and it was a lot more.

Going to try and get out this weekend.....

My 25.5 IMP did well leaving from Joppa to C&D and out towards Red eye. But it definitely had gained some flyer miles! Lol

I'll be there in the morning just to watch them leave and get a few nice shots. Since mine is out this season. I just go for the sounds and the smells.

The Bay is no joke.....I have been all over the Caribbean through some rough weather..and the Chesapeake or worse yet the Delaware Bay will prove your skills when the weather turns.

On a brighter note....heading out all day tomorrow.

badmonkey 08-18-2016 06:41 PM

I've got a Ice hockey team meeting for my daughter on Saturday at 11 or 1130am. It will be probably take an hour and a half...I am certainly interested to do something when I get done with that...or Sunday wherever. Get me some cell phone numbers and I'll call you guys and see where everyone is. Josh let me know what you're thinking for Sunday or even Saturday evening if you may go out then.

Thanks, Chris
