The Horny Toad

I just booked a week vacation at Toad Cove from June 28 to July 5th in a Grand Suite wth a boat slip for the week. Looks like a very fun place to stay. Has anybody stayed there and what did you think?

glassdave 04-21-2009 01:44 AM

Great place, we stayed in a condo just across the street. I dont know much about the lake but we had a good time at the Toad.

da Toad

I Have not stayed there because we live here but its cool to go to multi level bars resturant onsite sand volleyball court entertainment on weekends and close to all the things a boater needs.

Never stayed there, but I've been there plenty of times. Its a nice place, but just does not have that fun, casual lake atmosphere that it used to before it "accidentally" caught fire and was rebuilt. There are plenty more places I would rather go when at the lake.

bajaholic 04-21-2009 01:01 PM

I think it is fair to say, those of us that remember the "old Toad" complex, change is always hard to take.

That being said; The "current Toad Complex", is a VERY nice place, top shelf accomidations, great food, all the entertainment there is to offer and a large Marina area.

It is also a great home base, then you can travel and see what other places the lake has to offer.. If you get bored, it is definaetly your own fault.

Only thing you really need to beware of, is once you come to the lake it is addictive, next thing, you will be looking at property and want to b there all the time! :ernaehrung004:

Looks like I should have a great time. I figured after a week here i will be highly tempted to be looking at property. Looks like I will be about 12 miles from partycove

And it will be a rough 12 miles on 7/4 weekend. There are several good places to go in that same area of the lake.

If you go out at night be careful. Toads is an area the water patrol hang out after dark since there will be lots of folks hanging out drinking there.

redbud35 04-21-2009 07:05 PM

You'll love it here. There's never a dull moment.

B BOATER 04-21-2009 08:27 PM

The Toad is very nice. Love Lazy days close to party cove and kind of the center of the lake. Have fun we will be down for Memorial day and the 4th of july.

Mentalpause, thanks for the heads up about the water patrol. With where we are staying, there should be plenty to do at night without having to be on the water and then I can just stumble back to my room.

fountain4play 04-21-2009 10:35 PM

The Toad and Shady Gators are just around the corner from us....we've never stayed their but the new condo's and swim up pool are pretty cool.... It can be a money pit at times but it is what you want it to be...you can have fun just about anywhere down at LOTO.....Shady Gators is only a little walk away and then you have Dog Day's, Frankie and Louies, Docknockers, Backwater Jack's & Jolly Rogers right in the area to have a good time....

Mentalpause is correct the WP like to lurk just outside the breakers at night looking for anything that they can stop you for but so does all of the other popular places after dark....If you take care of business and don't get crazy around the places they usually don't bother people too much....that is unless your in a flashy boat....then you will get stopped just to check things out...have fun and enjoy the lake...

Rebel_Heart 04-21-2009 11:52 PM

Always stop in several times during the summer. Never spoken to anyone that has stayed there, but it looks top notch. A lot of other places in the general area to explore.

sommerfliesby 04-22-2009 06:16 AM

The Toad is nice, but for a better atmosphere, take the walk over to Shady Gators come drinkytime! We usually stay at the AquaFin, right across the street from the Toad complex, so we frequent both places when the boats are tied up for the evening.

outlawinil 04-22-2009 12:33 PM

Yeah I'd go to the Horny Toad if I didn't have anything better to do. But like others here have said, there are alot of better places to go at the Lake. The WP love to watch the place for a reason

rvtransport 04-22-2009 02:10 PM

I have stayed at toad its a great place! I also partied at Gators and two boats in are group got pulled over right outside of the break water late in the evening and they where both drinking not falling over drunk but proubly over the legal limit. The water patrol was very forgiving and let both drive 1 mile back to house we had rented. If they where looking just to give tickets they would have been in trouble, but they where looking out for safty.

You are by far the exception to the rule! The LOTO WP isn't known for leniency when it comes to alcohol related matters. 229 citations last year, 276 and 316 in the prior years.

The BAL also was lowered to .08 last year.

I've never know the MSWP to be lenient when it comes to boating and drinking.

I second that. but then with Von Bongo's post of 229 citations last year - I'd argue you could do that on one good holiday Saturday if you wanted to. There is a lot of crazy drunks on the lake.

That is why we quit boating after dark.:drink:

Therapy, also be careful leaving the toad area by road after dark. Most of the road is about 35 mph speed limit until you get to HH, and lots of curves and places where the local police can surprise you.

Just drive the speed limit and you will be fine.

omerta one 04-23-2009 04:21 PM

Just a reminder that their is also a 30mph night time speed limit on the lake.

It's tough to keep the Cig on plane at 30mph so we don't go out at night in it very often. Always feel safer in the crusier at night.

Therapy Session 04-23-2009 07:11 PM

Well after all the great info everybody has given me I ended up changing places today. I found a 3br/2ba condo at Lands End which I booked today and cancelled my reservation at Toadcove. Much better price and I get a full 3 bed rooms. At toad cove the rooms only had 1 king size bed and a sleeper pullout. Looks like the more relaxed lake atmosphere I am looking for. Also I will be much closer to partycove now which sounds like will be a big plus.

Now I sure hope nobody tells me Lands End sucks. From the lady I talked to today and the pictures I have seen looks like a very nice place.

Griff 04-23-2009 07:21 PM

Excellent choice. Lands End is one of the nicest complexes on the lake and close to everything.

redbud35 04-23-2009 07:21 PM

Your going to like Lands' End. I have a condo there. It's close to everything.

Looks like I made a good choice. Will you be there the week of the 4th. I see you are from Rud Bud. I am orginally form Pinckneyville. Hope to meet some new people down there at the lake.

redbud35 04-23-2009 08:40 PM

We will be there. Going down for the MWBP Poker Run and staying through the fourth. Do you know Allen MCcree from Herrin?

Therapy Session 04-23-2009 09:14 PM

I have heard of the name, but have never met him. I now live in Marion IL. Mostly boat on Kentucky Lake or if time is limited we go to Lake Kinkaid in Murphysboro

outlawinil 04-23-2009 09:22 PM

Much better choice, great location

BDiggity 04-23-2009 09:26 PM

We stayed at lands end last memorial weekend. was a great place.

baywatch 04-23-2009 09:56 PM

Good choice and much closer to stuff by land as well.

I can't wait for the poker run the weekend of the 26th
and the 4th.

FYI, If you go to Fireworks for the 4th by water be very careful when you leave. Everyone takes off when they are over @ 30mph and it makes for some of the scariest water I have ever experienced. The issue is visibility and the close proximity off all the boats. It is best to dodge into a cove while the traffic dies out.

Have fun!!!

Ditto of the water after the fireworks. It is some of the scariest chit you could ever get into. I saw 50 ft cruisers leaning side to side with their rub rails almost in the water and I was in my 28 Pantera:eek: Powerboats would actually disappear from sight between wakes.

Great choice. I've stayed there a few times. The breakwall does a good job of knocking down the main channel waves around the docks. You will get a little movement but it is not too bad. Depending what building you are in, you'll have a great view.

We stay at a house in Porta Cima at the 14MM over the 4th. We sit at the mouth of the cove (the old party cove from back in the mid 90's) and can see the fireworks perfectly. We then just putz back to the dock so we miss all the big water. That is a great cove to wait out the traffic in if you go out by boat to see the fireworks from Land's End.

I am in building number 5. Would you be able to see the fireworks show from the patio of the condo at Lands End or are the fireworks shows quite a ways from Lands end?

Griff 04-24-2009 10:19 PM

You might be able to see them a little bit, but they are about 5 miles away by water and around a curve in the lake. The FW's are about the 13mm and Lands End is at the 19mm.

cullen_11 05-17-2009 06:31 PM

You wont be able to see most from building 5, I own one in 5 and in 3 and can't see much from either, just the very high ones. Only about a 5 mile cruise over and back (after the crowd clears of course) though....

12 miles is a long way on Memorial Day weekend. Water will be like a washing machine. Go early ...stay late. I'll be wachin for ya.
