Need Engine Help --- ATECO Engines ???
Hello from LOTO
Do any of you have experience with an ATECO engine package? Looking at the 540/700. I have 320 hours on factory 500HPs with carbs in a Formula 353. Thinking of rebuilding but the ATECO may make sense if the quality and depenability are there. If I rebuild mine; any suggestions as to engine specs or who is the best at LOTO or KC / STL area ? Thanks, appreciate all the experienced input here !!! ...watchin' the leaves fall in Omaha Jack353 |
I'm looking to do the same as you, would like to hear what people have experienced. Also what about Dyno-flow engines.

Jack353 and Wildthing357, fyi...if you're looking for reliable offshore performance engines, there are people who bring their engines all the way from the Detroit area and from LOTO to WESCO (Dave Wesseldyk's shop) in the western Michigan area. He is at least worth a phone call or stop in his shop and see some of the wild stuff he builds. Dave's phone is...616-662-2250

Be carefull with At@co :angry-smiley-038: Be prepared to wait forever 4 your chit:eek::eek: |
I visited the Dyno-flow folks a year or so ago. I think I'm going to look elsewhere although I've never run their product. Sounds like people are happy with Wesco and Riss. I'll contact both
|
Jack,
Several good places at LOTO to do the work. People like CPR or you can call Doug at http://performanceboatbrokerage.com/ and he can help you out. |
A couple of things to consider about Wesco.....Dave does not advertise...he does not need to and he is always busy and his work/offshore engines speak for themselves.
Another thing is unless he has his hands full, Dave will always answer his phone. He doesn't run from or avoid people---he has no need to. He is a true professional. |

im for ateco
i took my 502 carb motors out of my cafe racer and brought them to bill. his estimate was they were not 415 hp more like 385 the way they were rigged. they are now 525 hp 502 cu carb motors. not a hick up boat has never sounded or run so good. bills estimate was right on the money. and so was the time. start now dont wait till all engine builders are busy. my vote is ateco

Hey Jack, been a while, your boat has always been one of the best running 353's I've ever driven or sold. Alot of good recomendations on here. Is the boat still in the same place down here?
|
I've known Bill for years. He builds all of my engines and gives a 2 year warranty. Talk to him before you decide.
|
+1 for Doug at Performance boat brokers. great people to deal with and very fair !!!!
|
If you choose Ateco, make sure to get a finished time in writing !!!! Bill is fair and knowledgeable, but is not always timely.
|
Hey, Hope you're doing well !
Yea, its still in the same place. I think I put on a total of 15 hours on it this YEAR ! Take Care |

Sounds like the norm coming out of AT@CO BIG Daddy :eek:,there the only engine shop i ever heard of that did'nt know what to charge for a short block when it was done and when i asked for the bill they had to get the employees time card who assembled it and add up all his hours and phone calls to Dart & Larrys to get ring gaps sizes, piston wall clearances, coated wrist pin questions answered, plateau hone procedures,,to do the assembly . i would think if your building a fresh motor and done it before would'nt need to spend hours and hours on the phone calling around on a customers nickel at $95.00 an hour ... And why the H@LL would you call Isky to custom grind a new cam when Comp has them on the shelf ready to ship ??? WTF Like Diesel said RUN AS FAST AS YA CAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:kiss : |
If you're looking for a shop at LOTO Lightning Performance would be my choice for engines. Gene builds a fantastic motor.

Lightning Performance 31205 Highway 5 Gravois Mills, MO 65037-3871 (573) 374-7974 I'm not sure if Perf Boat Brokerage builds there own engines or does the assembly and specs them out. I have only heard excellent reviews about them as well. There customer service is second none. |
Lightning Performance built up my 502s several years ago. Gene knows his stuff and is connected with a great machinist in KC. He, also warranties his work.

Bill at ATECO is a proven builder. He's not the quickest but he makes up for it on thoroughness. His engines are rock solid and he stands behind them. As with all good craftsmen the can be a little quirkey, but thats how it goes. If you search way back on these boards, you will find a lot of great things said about his engines. Right now there is some scorned moron trying to ruin his reputation, funny thing is this guy was burned by someone else, NOT BILL!!!. Well, as they say a "happy sailor is a *****in sailor. Good luck.
|
Bill built the engines in my Cig Bullet you can see the boat on his web site
The boat is run hard and never had a problem in 5 years. he will soon be building me a 540 for the cig 20 |

+1 for Gene at Lightning Performance. Since you are local to LOTO it makes sense to stay local. I looked at Bill too, and while he seemed very nice, knowledgeable and was always easy to get him on the phone, I had qualms about dragging the boat way up there to him and then if there was a warranty issue, I would have to drag it back. Maybe more than once? no thanks.
gene was great. He was fair, timely, and he built me two rock solid supercharged 502's. communication was great, and he warrantied his work. had a couple minor issues and he arrived at my dock to take care of them. he cares very much about his reputation and it showed in his service. I would definitley use him again. |
I bought a long block this summer from Bill and was in a hurry he delivered what he promised in time and on the $ he mentioned.
PS; I have not blown up that one yet, not for lack of trying! With it in our MTI. http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._6889722_n.jpg |

No Harm meant :party-smiley-004:we just boated around a lot of sail boats where we used to live and they usually did not like any boat with through hull exhaust,
If I win the lotto a 40 sail boat with 1500 sterlings / first thing I will order just to go back and go sailing:lolhit: Thumper |
