What are the advantages of the max volt box vs the msd box?

CPPerformance 09-17-2012 03:16 PM

The Deluxe MAX Volt systems are an alternative to the MSD product. The advantages is to those that understand the technologies advancements best. The MAX VOLT product is a very high end digital technology box built here in the USA. This technology is faster and more responsive providing crisper cleaner performance than analog.

Digital technology is vastly superior to the analog technology the MSD offer's the marine market. While MSD offers digital technology they do not offer it to the marine industry at this time. These systems feature an integrated rev control in the box so there are no external rev control chips to buy. These boxes are the only current multi spark digital technology ignition systems available in the marine market today that feature USCG approval. MSD makes an excellent product as well, it just doesn't offer some of these features or value at this time.

Run-Ready distributor kits are a single fire reliable electronic ignition option for those not seeking the benefits of a higher performance system but just need a reliable standard electronic ignition system at a MUCH more affordable option to a similar MSD system.

Does the system use a programmable ignition curve or is it mechanical like the MSD?

CPPerformance 09-17-2012 05:26 PM

The box comes pre-programmed with a single program or curve similar to what a standard MSD curve is at this time. A custom curve can be loaded into the box during manufacturing but this particular box is not consumer programmable. They plan to release a programmable unit for 2013 I expect it will be out by the PRI Show or Key West World Finals.

Well I can't attest to what Sterling uses but I know Teague still assembles engines using V-Belts and MSD so I do know he doesn't use them. The Digital technology comes from the same firm that builds a popular ignition brand that is marketed under their camshaft company's name. The product has been around for about ten years but it wasn't until MAXVOLT made the investment to have the units potted and sealed and USCG tested and approved that they could be used successfully in a marine environment.

how many degrees of advance curve is built into the box right now and at what RPM does it begin to increas and what RPM is full advance. Can an existing MSD billet distributor be used if the timing is locked out?

This info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have latency comparison tests been made, that is, Analog to Digital ?

Also, though the new box is potted, is surface mount or through hole technology used ?

Finally, is there a comparison between the HI-6, and knock sensor provisions ?

CPPerformance 09-27-2012 02:41 PM

Here's some answers from the product developer.

Latency better known as (signal delay) times are insignificant for either system compared to cylinder-cylinder timing jitter in a real functional engine.

In regards to mounting of the ignition box With the exception of a few high powered electronic devices (Not ignition boxes) , everything we are aware of in this product demographic is surface mount.

We have no comparison's to the HI-6 product since most of the original development team of the HI-6 was involved in the MAXVOLT development. Because of this they found it a mute point.

There is not a knock sensor provision.
