Default Key for 36 Supercat Question

Does the key under the dash on the port side of the shifter console actually do anything? If I turn it and pull the key out, the ignition still comes on when I flip the switch. Also, is there only one key switch for the boat? I would expect there would be one for each motor. Thanks in advance.

Mine has two key one for each engine and the ignition will not come on unless the keys are turned to on also mine are both up under the dash not along the console by the shifters

Thanks Nate and Spicy. That's where mine is too. You mention two keys. Is there one on each side, or are they on the same side next to each other? Maybe I need to stand on my head and get a better look.
