Re: let it breathe
Bill,
Unfortunately, our decks don't have any air intakes on the sides. Unless you are willing to do some glass work, this doesn't apply. You really don't need to go to that much trouble anyway. The deck vents made by Monstaa should work just as well, and I think they look great. The advantage here is that they are in a high pressure area on the deck sides and should have a ram effect. Maybe not as trick, but still effective are the hatch vents that my friends and I are using. The vents I'm using came from Eddie Marine. www.eddiemarine.com Regards, Steve |
Re: let it breathe
Steve,
I really like the looks of your hatch vents. The Monstaa deck vents are nice but I like the way yours work with the stock color trim. I am leaning toward a direct cold air feed to the TB rather than adding cooling air to the engine compartment. Do you have pictures of your hatch vents from the interior side of the hatch? Bill |

Re: let it breathe
Steve,
What tools did you use to cut the holes in the lid? |
Re: let it breathe
Bill,
I used a 1.5" hole saw to cut the ends. And then used a circular saw to cut the long straight sections. Get some safety glasses, and cover your motor. There's going to be a lot of glass flyin' around............. Regards, Steve |
Re: let it breathe
A ROTO Zip would work well :evilb:

Re: let it breathe
Rage,
I used a black sharpie to outline the cut. A 1 1/2" hole saw to give me nice radiused ends, and then I did a plunge cut with a circular saw to do the straight sections, and that worked well. I have a roto zip and did use it to install 3 pop up cleats (1 on the nose, 2 on the side decks). You would have to have a steadier hand than mine to use the roto zip to make those long straight cuts. Maybe if you installed a temporary guide, like a small 1/2" X 1/2" X 18" board, screwed to the hatch. You may want to reread my specific instructions earlier in this thread. Regards, Steve |
Steve,
Where did you get the purple vents?? Those are great and I would like to add them. My boat is all stock but.... The subwoofer is in the engine department!! Brad |

Hey Steve,
I was looking at this again. Do you have two of the Eddie Marine 2.5 x 17 large vents ? I can't tell from the photo if you have one on each side. Thanks - Brad |

I'll measure them today. Eddie Marine should have my ordering records. You can get the part #s from them if you need to. Regards, Steve |
Steve,
Anything new on getting cool air to the engine intake in a Nordic? In my case a Rage. I have finished the engine work and back to the air intake improvement issue. |

Other alternatives are an engine hatch scoop (not practical on a "lake/non-race boat") or Monstaa's deck side induction vents, which I like a lot. I think the advantage his sytem has over my setup is there's probably a better ram effect on the side decks, and you wouldn't get as much engine noise in the cockpit. Personally I don't mind the noise, but I have friends who cover their ears due to the blower whine on my boat at speed. If you're coming to the Jamboree this weekend, I'll show you my setup. Regards, Steve |
Yes, the engine noise will be an issue for me so I am only considering intake designs that would come from the gunnels or below the rear bench seat. I plan on doing some testing of air pressure differential between the engine intake with the hatch closed versus various potential air intake access points with a jurry rigged manometer. Are you aware of anyone having done this kind of testing before and if yes what were the findings?
No we will not be at the Jamboree. I would like to see your set up first hand. |

I thought I would bring this back up and see if anyone has done anything else. I am trying to get rid of some of this under hatch heat. Even the wife complains when she opens it up to get something after we stop, "damn its hot in here". I have the lightning headers and think the added surface area adds even more heat. I would like to add some vents to the outside because the Whipple is already loud enough in the cockpit area.
Any more thoughts? Tom |
