Pulled the trigger on a 2008 Heat

Just got home from Oregon Custom Marine, where I pulled the trigger on a wood-free, open-bow, 2008 Heat, with a 525 EFI. Both Kevin and Tim, have been extremely helpful and professional in helping me with my boat buying experience. I am stoked!!

I opted for the 525 package being that I am definately a performance oriented kind of guy.

Are the 525's still having problems with header issues? I am worried about some of the horror stories I have heard about leaking headers toasting motors.

Any guesses on top end speed?

My guess... about 78

Any info would be appreciated.

Chris

Congrats on the purchase! I'm oh so close to getting a 28 Heat also! which one did you get? They have a closed bow Heat I like there.

CB-BLR 07-29-2008 09:31 AM

I ordered one out of the factory in Havasu. They didn't have an 08 open bow on the floor at OCM. Really like the idea of a all-composite boat. I am worried about my choice of power, as I have read some disturbing stories about the exhaust on the 525 EFI's .

Dont be. Lots of new 525's out there. New ones should be just fine. Enjoy!

bobl 07-29-2008 11:01 AM

Congratulations! You'll love the boat.

Keep in mind there are many 525s in service with just a handful having problems. You should not have any issues with a new 525.

raytart 07-29-2008 10:42 PM

My 28 heat with 525 has 165 hours of trouble free performance. Lots of luck with your new ride.

Nordicflame 07-30-2008 10:15 AM

Congrats!!!

You'll love it!

Thinking about really pushing the budget and getting a
600sci :evilb:

Any thoughts?

How fast do you want or can you afford to go.

If your thinking 600, you'll never be happy with the 525.
If you can afford it, buy it.

I'm a little suprised that nobody chimed in on the speed thing.......

My guess is ( depending on conditions of course) 73-76...

I've heard of much better but have never seen it with power in that range.

CB-BLR 08-03-2008 12:59 AM

Southocg,

What do you think it would run for speed with the 600?
I would guess about 5 or 6 mph slower than you do... the 08 is a lighter boat than the 07

Chris

OCM 08-03-2008 12:41 PM

Maybe i look at the Glass half full. I bet the new boat will run 80 on GPS. (With the Merc Racing 525)

Tim,

Ha ha ..... But you are supposed to say that..... right?

I sure appreciate all your help and patience with the build of my boat project. You guys are awsome there at OCM!!

I will give you a call Monday morning about the 600sci. It is a definate GO, on my end. We will just have to see if we can make the numbers work.

Thanks again,

Chris

Chris

15 hp per 1 mph.... 5-7ish sounds about right.

The 08's are lighter but the merc motor package is heavier.
Now an 08 with an ILMOR package, your looking at a weight savings of roughly 700 pounds (450 hull, 250 motor)....

If I had it to do over again... I'd throw in more power.
It just never really seems to be enough... If you want to run over for the CDA Perf. Boat Regatta, I give you a ride and let you see how the boat rides/handles with the IMCO drive and ILMOR Power is you'd like.

CB-BLR 08-03-2008 10:29 PM

Thanks southocg,

Unfortunately I wiil have to pass on that one, other time constraints.

My boat will have an IMCO SC drive on it regardless of what power I go with, as I am supplying the drive unit.

What is your best speed to date?

Chris

IMCO SC on mine as well...

88.5 GPS....

The PB write up showed the boat at 89.9

CB-BLR 08-03-2008 11:53 PM

Possibly the reduction in speed because of your elevation?

I have noticed that my boats are typically 2-3 mph faster here in Seattle, at sea level and cool air, than when I take them to Havasu to visit family.

Chris

rlj676 08-04-2008 09:40 AM

CB-BLR,

Have you looked into the Raylar 550? It's a small block and considerably lighter than the Merc's, and I think cheaper. I really think it'd be a great application in a single 28. The weight savings could result in performance similar to the 600sc, but at lower cost.:drink:

Of course, it's easy for me to speculate with your money.:party-smiley-004:

I do hope someone puts one of these in a Heat, AT, Pantera 28 though to see how it runs.:evilb:

bobl 08-04-2008 10:21 AM

Keep in mind insurance will be more and harder to get once you go past the 525.

Hadn't thought about that. I will have to call my insurance guy, and get a quote both ways.

Try to stay away from "boat specific" insurance.
Try and run it through your home owners.

It's always seemed to work better for me that way.

I got a quote through State Farm, (they insure both my homes, all three vehicles, and my current boat), and they gave me a quote of $538.00/year for the boat with the 600 motor.

Tim of OCM did a fantastic job of getting me hooked up with financing for the 600sci, so that is the way I am going.

That is cheap as $hit.... did they even ask the HP or was it based soley on the value of the boat?

Make sure they run it thru under writing...
That is where it gets kicked out; not the agent level. This is a very common problem and one State Farm is somewhat (un)popular for.
More than likely, if you can't run it thru the Progressive online quote, State Farm won't write it when it comes time.

I found this just in time when I was looking at deck boats over the winter.

Just a freindly warning... Hopefully they write it because that would be a very nice package!!

Dave

CB-BLR 08-05-2008 09:44 PM

The underwriter wanted $582.00 a year for the 600 motor and it was solely on the value of the boat. It is still considered a pleasure boat instead of a performance boat because of the open bow. The insurance information was faxed to the bank today along with the paperwork we signed down at OCM. Looks like it is a done deal.

Special thanks to Tim at Oregon Custom Marine for making my "dream boat" come true.

Tim...................You Rock!! :ernaehrung004:

Steve Zuckerman 08-05-2008 11:06 PM

Chris,
Congratulations. You've bought a great boat, and I think I need your insurance agent's phone #. Just Kidding, but that is a terrific quote. I'm paying $725 for a 575 hard deck Heat.
Welcome to the Nordic Navy:drink:..............
Regards,
Steve

bobl 08-06-2008 09:55 AM

I was paying around $900 on my 28 with the stock 496. State Farm quoted $1000. Must be the location where you boat. You have a pretty short season up there.

Southocg 08-06-2008 11:38 AM

I thought I was getting a smoking deal @ $800.00 a year with the 710...... Holy Schiat.

CB-BLR 08-06-2008 04:04 PM

Maybe it is because I insure through them:

Two homes
One condo
Three cars
Two quads
four motorcycles
two jetski's
all my buisness equipment

and my boat.

Besides which, I have been with the same agency for the last 15 years, and have only had a couple of auto claims.

I dunno..... but it works for me :ernaehrung004:

Chris

p.s. Cant wait to get that thing on the water !!

Rage 08-06-2008 11:27 PM

Progressive Insurance policies:

"Maximum horsepower is 1000 for twin engines and 500 for a single engine. If more than one engine add the horsepower of all engines to determine total horsepower."

I was also asked if "Engine/outdrive modified to enhance performance?
"Answer 'yes' if your watercraft has any engine or outdrive components installed to enhance performance beyond hull and/or engine manufacturer stock configurations (i.e. blowers, superchargers, performance outdrives, performance props, etc.) "

I plugged in my boat "Nordic Rage" and was informed that "Horsepower cannot exceed 425 on this model."

Lucky that State Farm is available.

CB-BLR 08-07-2008 01:32 AM

Wow....

I am feeling like I must have lucked out or something on the insurance thing. I did not realize that I was getting such a good deal. I hope it stays that way. Makes me a little worried.

Chris

bobl 08-07-2008 09:58 AM

I'm no expert on insurance, but I think it has more to do with where you boat. I also have everything with State Farm and have been there for 30 years. So I'm sure our treatment was pretty equal in the quotes. I'm in Texas and we boat all year with no lay up period.

Rage 08-07-2008 12:12 PM

An addendum on Progressive Insurance. Check out this list of exclusions: http://watercraft.progressive.com/bo...insurance.aspx

I love the 75 mph max speed for runabouts but up to 90 mph max speed for bass boats

Not the case.... there are plenty of Heats up here and I've heard of insurance ranging from the $550 to $1800 with a 525 in an 07 boat. Just depends on who you go with I guess.

CB-BLR 08-07-2008 06:17 PM

Thanks southocg, that makes me feel a little better.

Bobl, we can boat here aprox 8 months out of the year depending where you go. Eastern Washington is quite warm.

Congrates you will love her. We have 116 hours on ours and only had a oil leak in a hose and Tim took care of it.We just spent a week on her went to the dam . We put 467 miles and some fuel. With all my caming gear two ice chest 5 gal propane 2 stoves and food with the water tank full and fuel we could still hit 70 mph.Ask Tim we keep this boat full.We LOVE her. We just got our insur. and we could not find any less than $1800.They said we were high risk because we had not owed a performance boat. I told them I had owned a boat for over 20 years and even work and tested boats for a living. We had to go with Dallar Insur.Send pics. as you get them. Hey Chris are you the guy that called me on Nordic boats?? Thank you C n T Smith:ernaehrung004:

CB-BLR 08-15-2008 12:21 PM

Yes,

I talked to you about your 525 boat that you got from Tim.
I sure appreciate you taking the time to talk to me.

I went for the 600sci motor.

Tim is absolutely awsome!
I could not imagine a better boat dealership.
So far, he has done everything to the n-th degree as far as customer service goes.

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Oregon Custom Marine!

Thanks.
