Oil Cooler Installation Ideas
I will be installing this Hardin Marine thermostatically controlled oil cooler:
http://www.hardin-marine.com/detail~ID~858.aspx The current oil system routing is a stock 2004 496HO with the exception of an aluminum oil filter bracket that came with the DANA Vortex Torque Flow exhaust system which did retain the stock oil filter location and hoses. I am very interested in any and all layouts and experiences, especially with pictures of any and all add on oil cooler installs especially that are hull/floor mounted I would prefer to retain the existing oil filter mounting and remove the stock 496HO oil cooler but I am interested in anything others have done. Nordic Rage and Nordic Heat installs are particularly of interest. Thanks in advance. |

I'm not falmilure with the 496,. Mine a 500efi, I mounted mine to the 2 upper bellhousing bolts.made a little extension to raise it some,Mine also has a 1/2 spacer to space the cooler back some. there a lot of wire in that area on the 500.My oil thermostat on on the port side.
the other pick is using the 2 block upper holes, not mine Hope this gives ya some ideas Rob:drink: |

Mine uses the bellhousion to block bolt holes, around 2 1/2 x3/8 bolt, because I needed the space up and out, the other that uses just the 2 upper block holes was made by a friend , he didn't need the clearance, so he had a tighter, more com pack looking install.
My bracket ,plate steel silver color.mounted to the oil cooler c clamps. also try and get the One that have the o ring in the clamp mine doesn't ,I put some black tape trying to cushion the cooler, mine dents it some I'm not good at whats in my head then putting it into print:drink: oil thermostat pick |
Hey Strip,
Very nice work!! Guess you spoke with my buddy Jason about the Slingshot 540/Whipple 4.0 builds I'll be doing for him. Hopefully you won't mind if I pick your brain a bit about the rigging in that boat :drink: Thanks, Dave |

Anyone with hull or floor mount approaches for the oil cooler?

Thanks, that will probably be the approach I will use since there is no room on the back of my engine and the decking of a Rage for a rear engine mount. Where do your inlet and outlet oil lines to the cooler connect to the engine? Where did you get the oil cooler hold down clamps? Thanks in advance. Bill |

Heres my old Scarab, its a big industrial cooler from Teague,if I had to do it again, i would prob mount it to the motor or on the stringer below the motor, i like the idear on everything mounted to the motor, self contained, you can pull it off the dyno and put in boat and be running in a hour, keeps it simple.
Its brass in the pick:ernaehrung004: |
Rob,
I see you went to AFR heads in one photo. How much did they help over the GM heads you had? |

He stepped out of the Nordic box with his choice and I think he made a good one :ernaehrung004: Guess I'll be learning a bit more about these Slingshots; I actually have a 525EFI Whipple motor from another one on my operating table :D Talk to you soon, Dave |

I also have a remote oil filter mounted to the transom and those are the lines that run to the oil cooler.
What oil line size did you run to and from the cooler? |
Rob
I was hoping to find some Merc 575SC tops complete with blowers & throttle bodies. None seem to be moving around. May look for some whplles or go bigger |

I used 3/4 inch lines on my oil cooler and thermostat. The cooler didn't have a built-in thermostat so I used a Hardin Marine billet filter block/thermostat. The set-up worked really well, but spent a fortune on Russell hoses and fittings to make it look pretty!

If yes where did you get them? |
Thanks for all your help. Bill |
Sorry I can't help much with the mount. The Tbolt clamps are made to the floor mounts. I'm sure CPperformance or Eddie Marine carry something like them.

Is the water supposed to go to the sea pump first then to the oil cooler or can I run the water through the oil cooler on the way to the sea pump?
