Sub box in a Nordic Heat
Jay was asking about stereo installs so i thought i'd create a new thread of the install i did
The start http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5222/5...68fed59c_z.jpg Cut off the base http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5068/5...793b1c8c_z.jpg another shot of the base http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5068/5...1355e170_z.jpg New box front http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5030/5...cc641236_z.jpg New box rear http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5021/5...d1534e78_z.jpg Rear panel removed (access to front of motor) (before i installed it i cut out most of the floor area of the new box and attached it to the removable panel in the back so you could get to the batteries easier) http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5185/5...9ff134af_z.jpg Test fit http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5221/5...7c29f42e_z.jpg Storage between speaker boxes http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5267/5...acd66b9e_z.jpg Flushed in battery switch and wrapped w/ Vinyl http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5270/5...4e0c8510_z.jpg |

Looks awesome! Want to build me one? J/k. What a great idea. I'm going to pull my rear seat out soon, I should just do something like that while I have it out. Thanks for sharing.

HAHAHAHA!!!! Thanks for the pics.... That is EXACTLY what I sketched out yesterday lol :) Like literally. Even the subwoofer choice is the same. Did you manage to get 12's in the box? How much air space did you coax out of the boxes? Looks great!

Great work, hopefully you haven’t patented it yet..ha,ha. Not to stray too far but have you ever stepped off the Sun pad onto the front edge of that seat and have it open, kind of funny the first few times. Just trying to find out if it’s common or is there something wrong.

yes, i HATE that back seat hinge... i've seen a few ideas on here but i think i'm going to do a magnetic strip on both sides to keep it from flipping FW. |
I have the same problem. I hate that damn back seat hinge! Magnets are a good idea. I was gonna try Velcro. I can't count how many times I've almost taken a dive inside the boat because of that seat opening up.

I am glad you are pleased with the Solobarics. I was planning on running (2) L7s in there, 2 ohms. I have a JL 1000 Mono that I have used to push a lot of different subs. I have some experience with L7s off that amp, and can only say...wow. Physically hurt my ears to listen to them at full tilt. LOVE IT!! I have a couple set of JL components to use in the cabin (dry area) but will be running something else in the cockpit, we will see where end up there. What did you use for wood? Didnt look like MDF. Marine grade I am assuming. I am excited now to get home and do it up like that. My battery switch is under the seat, I will be trying to keep it concealed, we will see how that works for me. Looks great though man, Love it!

Eric I considered cutting the seat cushion into 3 pieces since the area in the middle is the only spot that needs to fold fw now w the sub boxes on either side. Then the smaller cusion over the sub boxes could be fixed and an easy landing spot off the dock or sunpad |
I hear you on the battery switch. Maybe I will have to work in a trick little door or something and mount it up front, but hidden. Another thing I want to redo is my carpet. I do not like the tan that is in there, but with the older heats, its not a snap in setup either :( We will see how that works out. I know this may be a long shot, but you dont happen to have CAD drawings for that setup you did, do you?

Nice work Ned. Great idea on the sub boxes. That should rock!
My friend Butch has 3 down firing 12s in his rear bench, and it really sounds great. Since the entire seat base is enclosed, he doesn't have any storage there, and he has to install and remove batteries through the engine compartment. You have the enclosures, still have some storage (you can never have enough), and have battery and engine access. Best Regards, Steve |

Best Regards, Steve it really does work out well, enough room for the 2 amps, a good size bag of tools, and a jump box... |
Well, I am looking froward to getting home and doing this myself. I am a draftsman that was pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree, so I like to draw things out. Who knows, maybe I can market something someday lol. My father in law is a wood working guru, and I love to design stereo stuff....hmmm, I may be on to something here.

You store your amps underneath the rear bench? Are they sealed in? Got any pics? Sorry for all the questions.
|
Yea, they are inside the storage area... i've got one on each side, mounted to the sub box side. no pics and my boat is all wrapped up for the winter... i have to get in there at some point tho to take some pics of the gauges i'm going to sell... so i'll try and take a couple then...
i put provisions (3" hole w/ a hole saw) behind the vinyl on the face of the back seat base (between the subs) for some fans but the amps don't seem to get very warm so i decided to just leave it as is. |
Awesome! You have been a great help, bringing all these lingering thoughts together to make a plan :)
|
i know it's been a while but i was installing some new sea strainers last weekend so i snapped a few pics of the amps installed. (please excuse the lack of vacuum) :)
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7078/7...0d54fe9c_b.jpg here it is w/ the access panel removed (makes working on the front of the motor way easier) http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7087/7...9984a7c4_b.jpg |
That's genius! I really need to do this to my heat.
|
it really works out well... you can easily remove the top part of the seat and then it gives you a small bench to sit on while facing the motor when doing oil changes, winterizing, or other random surgery
