Nordic 28SS after a year, feedback.

As many know i picked up a SS at the start of this year moving away from the Heat. When we picked it up i had zero drive time in a cat besides a test drive. Every trip this year it became more and more fun with seat time. The last trip of the year we had a few chances to go up river to Pirates with very little traffic, and i think it is one of the funnest things i have ever done.

We went with the 600SCI and i have been very pleased with the performance. In excellent conditions full of fuel and 4 people we where able to run 96mph. I have nothing but great things to say about the performance and how good the folks at Nordic have been. Now i am left to cruising the forum and waiting for the sun to return. And making pointless threads on OSO....

Here is a little fly by vid.

Great Boat ! I m looking in to 26-28 ft cat to swap my both boats I narrowed my search to the 28 speedster ,redline and the nordic . I talked whit Thane about the 28 ss as I m in europe I planned to visit the miami boat show but none of the builders are there so now try to schedule a round trip thru the USA to see al 3 .

It is hard for me to give you cat to cat feedback since this is my first and really the only one i have been in. I do know you will have a hard time finding a faster hull in this size.

I love the way the boat rides and drives. This boat runs at it's best with very little trim. The boat will turn really easily and you can make it drift easily once you get a feel for it. It loves chop into the wind, i have been cruising across the lake turn into a slight wind or ripple and the boat will start to accelerate without any more throttle or trim. It stays on plane until about 15 to 20 mph, i have been in slot canyons with lots of tight turns and have no problem staying on plane, this surprised me more than anything about the SS.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. I will also post some more pics.

Beautiful boat!

Steve Zuckerman 12-19-2012 10:45 AM

Great looking boat JD. I can see why you like it so much.
One thing Nordic is doing that I don't see on anyone else's cats, is a built in swim platform on the back deck.
If you think of how much eyeryone uses their swim platforms on vee hull hulls, it's obvious they are handy to have on cats too. And they keep the deck lines sleek.
Best Regards,
Steve

Funny you mention that. When we where shopping i was thinking Thor but my wife got all obsessed with the swim deck so i say OK! hahaha. I like the SS because of the edges, everyone is rounding everything off and i don't really love that.

Ya you need to make a trip to Powell. It's a good time, but I do miss my Heat for some things.

Eroc5150 12-21-2012 11:08 AM

What's your best cruising speed in that JD?
Sounds real nice with the mufflers too. Hopefully I can run into you next summer and see this thing up close. I didn't get out much last summer due to having a kid. Can't wait to take her to Powell in the spring.

It is pretty happy at 50mph and it is stress free at that speed for the most part. Ya i am plannign on making a couple trips up your way next year. I am sure we could work something out.

Jason Scott 01-08-2013 04:58 PM

Nice Pictures JD. Hope to see you many times on the water this year!

VegasNordic 01-10-2013 01:02 AM

Boat looks amazing. I would love to get into a cat or more power in my heat one day. Can"t wait to get back down to Havasu in march as well. I saw you towing it up the grade in into boulder city NV sometime in end november or december. See you on the water!

JD could you elaborate a little on the advantages and disadvantages of the SS as it compares to your old Heat?

JD Dearden 07-18-2013 12:38 PM

Sure,

The SS is a better performing boat in almost all aspects, rough water, speed, etc... It is an absolute blast if it is you and wife / girlfriend just out for a run. Once you start to add people it gets tougher, 4 people is still ok, 6 gets crowded. The SS is a coupe and that is really the best way to describe it. The Heat was and is a great boat, more room etc. It really just comes down to what you put your value in the most, if you want pure performance get an SS if you want to focus more on comfort the Heat would be a better option...

Amazing boats! the 28ss is at the top of the cat list and I am surprised it has not received more attention. Nordic is becoming even more a TOP NOTCH company with and excellent product.

Super happy for you and your new toy.

My buddy bought that Orange 28ss in your pic with the Teague 900 in it. I will start a thread this winter with lots of pics and video!

Enjoy!

Yep I know the boat. The previous owner is a friend of mine, I have actually towed that SS with another friend.

JD Dearden 09-16-2013 10:47 AM

575cat 09-16-2013 10:58 AM

What kind of power & numbers are you seeing now ?

JD Dearden 09-16-2013 11:16 AM

Boat should be around 750HP....I have not had a chance to take it to Havasu yet, and I really have not been in good conditions since the upgrade. I did hit a little over 90 up in Utah about 500 RPM's low...

Possibly , I have been talking to Thane a little bit , I have to sell my fountain first , I would get one complete less power and use one of my own engines .

JD Dearden 09-16-2013 11:51 AM

Oh right on, if you have any questions feel free to ask me.
