Coming around Sandy Hook can be a biotch! And with a west wind the bay can also be rough! If you dock at the Navesink you could also walk to Donovan's (which is on the ocean) or even Ichabod's. Let us know when you are coming over! I did notice boats running outside the channel, at speed but like I said I still need some time to learn the area. I just want to correct something, I didn't mean to imply the area is "wimpy", it's actually beautiful, I meant to say it's a good place to take non-boating (scared) or first timers who are not crazy about boats to begin with for a pleasant ride down the two rivers. :) I just assumed "stormrider" liked to run hard based on his handle and his boat (pantera). Hope to see you in the area! |
Re: Northern NJ spots
Guys, thanks for all the offers, you are all great!
Not sure when, or with whom I'll be coming down with. The wife & kids may be with me. Name is Reiter... pronounced rider... hence the handle. The whaler was E-Z Reiter. And I can run hard, but not crazy/stupid. I will let you know when I come down. And when you guys run the LI sound, you should drop into Port Wash. You've got 3 restaurants to choose from, and 93 octane. |

There is another cove to go to, it is in between the Clam Hut (Restaurant) and Windansea, you take a left at the "A Frame" House, it's an unmarked channel but plenty of water. You can nose the boat up right onto the beach and it's protected from waves wind etc. A lot of people go there to hang out, it's a really good time. Navesink Marina is where I keep my boat (93 Octane), so if you need anything just let me know. I'll PM you my phone number. By the way, I was out in the sound a few years ago and went to an awesome cove, I think it was called the sand pit, it was near port washington or port Jeff, I can't remember. There was a little 30 ft. wide channel to get in there but once you got in there was something like 20 ft of water. Lots of horseflies though... Panther |

Re: Northern NJ spots
All the coves mentioned are great, however most are tricky to get into. The one in the Navesink at the base of Hartshorne woods is great however you need to enter from the west. Between the 2 rivers (Navesink and Shrewsbury) is low water and all rocks. If you run from one river to the other make sure you go all the way around in the channel, the white bouys are not your friend stay away from them. The channel in the Navesink can also be very tricky, is like a snake getting to the oceanic bridge. Although it is a soft sandy bottom leave the channel and your in 6" of water before you know what happened. The cove (island) Panther mentioned is the new hangout now that Horseshoe cove is gone. Don't try and find that unmarked channel, water on either side is less than 1' and you will find the bottom. Approach the island from the North (bayside) and you'll be fine, don't try to do it from the river side, you'll be stuck. If you decide to beach stay to the west side of the island or you'll be the entertainment for the afternoon. The is an old unmarked seawall about 2' below the water, you'll be fine a full high tide, at any other time you'll hit it. The wall runs between the island and sandy hook.
If you run into the rivers, coming from the bay keep to the east side of the channel all the way to the Highlands bridge. It is usually "OK" to run there but really depends who is on duty and if he "got some" the night before. Very unpredicable. I usually run hard there but if I see the little blue light I'll slow down before I get to him. After the highlands bridge take it easy to the point where the rivers split, they WILL nail you here. At the point whre the rivers split, if you keep left (Shrewsbury) you can run just outside the channel on the west side, however slow down when you get past the islands to where the houses are or you will get nailed. Also don't go crazy, if they see you again it's questionable if you will get stopped or not. If you say just outside the channel and keep it under 50 mph you'll be fine. If you have dry exhaust and see a cop idle and stay to the west. Everything in this area is questionable. They do tend to stop the smaller boats more often than the bigger boats. How old are the kids? |
Re: Northern NJ spots
My kids are 6 1/2 & 5.
Wife gets a bit nervous about all the "axe murderers" I meet on the net, but it sure would be fun to run w/ you guys who have kids too so it would be easy to hang! So who has little ones? |
