getting out on the water
My name is nick, I'm looking for anyone in the philadelphia and NJ area that is willing to show me some ins and outs about the performance boating scene. I am willing to give gas money and help with the clean up after. Please let me know if you might be able to get me on the water in highperformance boat. Thank you very much

Hey Nick,
So what are you thinking about? Buying? What are you thinking on getting and when? Budget, skills, ever boat before? Lots of help to be had on this site. I've met some really nice people and made some great friends. I've also recieved some great advice and help and I think I've returned the same. Telling us a little more about yourself and your plans would help. Not to be too personal for instance I'm 53, work for the Philadelphia Fire Dept as a Fireboat Pilot on the Fireboat Independence for 7 years and on the job for 26 years. Married, Wife Vicki loves boating, 2 kids 23 and 20. Get the idea. Someone would be glad to take you out for a ride once they get to know a little more about you if you understand. Please don't take this as being discouraging. Just a little more detail would help. It sounded like you just wanted to pay for a boat ride. A ride in my boat as oposed to some other boat would be 2 different worlds. If your thinking of buying it would be helpful to you to have an idea of what you wanted then try to catch a ride in something close to your wants, needs and abilities. Keep posting and I hope I've been helpful? Bill |
Nick, by the way theres a thread here for the Philadelphia area that has some local guys that run on the Delaware and upper Chesapeke Bay area. Try posting in that thread. lot of the threads in the basic NE are mostly New England, CT Etc.

Yep, what he said. Tell us a bit about yourself. I dont have a problem with scaring the crap out of you if that is what you want....:party-smiley-004:

That's exactly what I mean! Beautiful weekend down the bay guys. Cat ran great, no issues other than needing more prop and breathers misting oil and making a mess. We need to hook up one of these remaining weekends. Jelly's was slow, caught some of the poker run boats later in the afternoon as we where leaving. Scared the crap out of myself. catching a little air at 100 or so. Keeps the heart going!

I dont think we can hang with you for very long. I will be out on the bay all weekend weather permitting.
|
I only get stupid in short bursts. Usually hang back with Mookymonkey and cruise around 50. I know those "V" bottoms get a little beat up out there. Water was a little rough this past weekend. We want to make it down for the fun run on the 14th. Anyone else in?

I want to get some helocopter shots of my boat done at speed.

And I am definitely not just looking to pay for a boat ride. The only reason I put the part about me putting up gas money is because I know how gas goes on the water.

Well I am 25, bought my boat when I was 23. Live in Delaware but work down in the Gulf, or in Singapore, on Drilling rigs.
The only real advice I can give you is make sure you get a boat that you can afford to run, not just afford to buy. Alot of people can spend $20k or $50k or $100k on a boat, but fail to realize the 10% a year on average it costs to run that boat. Mine went WAY over the 10% this year and the season is only half over. Were you planning on coming alone or do you have a girl that you wanted to bring with you? Dont want you to feel like a third wheel. Besides, the girls like fast boats....:evilb: |
Im from mass, 27, got my 1st boat when i was 23. 222 stinger. Id be a little cautious looking for som in the 30+ range for the 1st boat. Not saying you cant handle it or have the exspierence but its a differant game. I went to a 26 Velocity then a 32 Hustlr. I recenly bought a 35 cafe which is in resto. I also have a 272 formula thats is a great boat to bomb around with. There is a lot of great people on here that will give honest advise.

Nick, I think you need to narrow your field down a bit. 27' to 38' is quite a wide market. How about this:
1. What is your budget for purchasing your boat? 2. Where will you be doing most of your boating? 3. Will you keep it in water, on a trailer or at a rack marina? 4. What is your budget for yearly boat expences? 5. What will you use to tow it with if needed? 6. How big is enough and how big is too big? 7. Single or twins? 8. What speeds you lookin for? 9. Your girl or wife interested in the sport? (It matters) 10. Need cabin space, possible sleep aboard? 11. Where will it be stored during winter lay up time? 12. "V" hull or "Cat" I doubt you'll get insurance for a cat being young and new, unless you have bottomless pockets. We don't need to know the answers to some of these, you do. Then we can help you catch some time on a boat that will be close to what you will be looking for. I'd say operating budget is even more important than purchasing budget. I could hit the lottery and buy a boat that I couldn't afford to run if I blow the whole wad on the purchase. As stated earlier the 10% of the value of the boat is a yearly operating expence and I think it's closer to 15% maybe 20% depending on what your running, how often you run, how far you run and condition of the boat. I know I can blow thru $400. in fuel on a good day. Then after that day theres an oil change, both engines, drive oil change every couple trips. It adds up real fast. HMMM, anyone want to buy a cat? I shoulda never started adding it up! Anyway, I'm sure we can hook you up and help you out. And it really is a couples kinda thing. I know my wife would feel kinda weird just having a single dude riding along. She likes to have someone to gab to while the guys talk boat crap, I think the others will agree? The more info we have the better we can provide some answers for you. |
