Jeff, your best bet (IMO) is to trailer your boat out towards the Orient point area and then launch from there. It's a short run from Orient over to Old Lyme (The Pavilion). Ideally it would be nice if you could find someone from LI to run with you, but as long as you have a GPS you should be fine solo.

No reason you can't be a little late.

I don't have a gps yet, but I am ordering one today and will see if the guys at the marina can get it installed for me this week.

Depends on work too. But yeah trailering is the best idea I think.

Still playing it by ear.

I a, trying to work out insurance too. Apparently I ain't covered in the ocean. Having to make some adjustments.

Do you have a smart phone or an ipad? If so, DL the Navionics GPS app... it works fantastic and it's cheap. This app will not only give you the GPS you need, but it also has all the charts built in once you DL them. It is a little hard to read on a small screen and it drains the battery faily quickly (keep your charger on board), but it works and it's a lot better than nothing! I know it's been a great back up and has saved my azz more than once in the dark on other boats that didn't have a GPS!

I'm gonna do a little research on that. I see they have it for an IPAD. I need one of those for work anyway. Do they make a waterproof box for IPAD? I could velcrow it to the dash, and then take it with me.

The Garmin that I want is over 3grand.

I believe Otterbox as well as others make an ipad case that's waterproof. The big challange with using an Ipad or even an iphone on the dash is they are very tough to see in bright sunlight... but they work great if you can solve that issue... as well as find a way to plug them in becasue using the GPS feature will wear the battery down fairly quickly if it's left on.

Power inverter from the battery and run an outlet under the dash, or just use a cig adapter?

Idk? Going to research it a little. Working on insurance right now. Might not have the problem solved by this weekend.

Stacy is working hard for me though.

You can just use the cig adapter, but keep in mind most (all?)waterproof cases will not have an access port to allow you to plug the device in.

I've played with the idea of replacing my dash mounted GPS with a dash mounted ipad, but until someone can solve the sunlight issue and also come up with a case that's waterproof, removable, and allows docking, I don't see how it's really all that fiesable... At this point it either has to be mounted in the cabin or just used as just a back up.

I have confidence in Stacy coming through for you, she's always been very responsive!
