Use caution off the CT shore this summer
The state of CT is working hard on the ODW (Operation Dry Water) project which started this weekend.
They are enforcing the alcohol laws big time.
We were boarded twice today on a friends Sundancer just leaving the harbor at idle doing nothing wrong other than having more women on board than men I guess.
Watched them go from boat to boat at a mooring field all day checking for BWI. Apparently, (according to the officer who boarded our boat) even when at mooring the driver can still be charged with BWI. With no keys in ignition and no motors running.
They seem to be taking it more seriously this year than in the past.
Figured I'd let everyone know they are definitely out there this summer looking to enforce the laws so be safe.

Sounds like they may be pushing the envelope, and I'm sure they will be challenged when they cross the "wrong" party. It's going to be difficult for them to prove who the "driver" if the boat is moored, not running, and no keys in the ignition. Who will they ticket? The owner? Doesn't seem likely if he was not operating the vessel, which I'm sure will require a definition of what is involved in "operating" said vessel. It sounds more like they are looking to push the boundary of law enforcement straight into harassment & increase revenues while they're at it. Were they also boarding blow boats? It would seem discriminatory if they only focused on powerboats...

1st Coast Guard District to implement Operation Dry Water July 27-29 in the Northeast
Jun 26th, 2014
BOSTON — The 1st Coast Guard District is scheduled to start Operation Dry Water from July 27-29th in the Northeast.
The operation is intended to reduce the number of alcohol related accidents, injuries and deaths among recreational boaters.
A collaborative effort with local and state partners will focus on boating under the influence.
Last year in the 1st District area of responsibility, which covers an area from the Canadian border to Northern New Jersey, boating under the influence was a contributing factor in 29 recreational boating accidents, resulting in nine fatalities and 31 injuries.
Enforcement of this operation is to coincide with normal law enforcement and will not result in blockades or “checkpoints.”
“In 2013, alcohol use was a contributing factor in 21% of recreational boater deaths in the 1st Coast Guard District,” said Walt Taylor, a boating safety specialist at the 1st Coast Guard District in Boston, Massachusetts. “Alcohol use can impair a boater’s judgment, balance, vision and reaction time. Combine alcohol and the environmental stressors associated with boating such as wind, sun, vibration, noise, and motion of the boat can cause fatigue, dehydration and may unknowingly intensify the affects of alcohol on boaters. Boat Responsibly: boat sober, and always wear your life jacket.”

Not just CT here in Oklahoma they were participating in that as well. I live within earshot of a couple areas on the lake and sunday morning while I was getting the boat ready I heard no fewer than 5 lake patrol sirens go off in less than an hour. they supposedly had around 10-12 boats out here this weekend. Luckily they had all pretty much loaded up before we got out there sunday afternoon late.

It gets worse. In Atlanta, Ga they have a No Refusal traffic stop.
To cut down on DUI they now have so called authority to take anyone who refuses the breathalyzer tests to be taken to the local police station, held down on a stretcher, strapped down and then a blood sample is taken from the person.
Both men and women are treated the same way, both people who give permission and act calmly and those who refuse to give permission and scream things like...What country is this?
Sad commentary on our country and what is now being forced on all of us.
