Well... After about 500 texts today and a few dozen calls, the trip is still on with a net loss of one guy. Two dropped out but one of the guys is now taking his son. Pulling out tomorrrow after work. Thanks for all your help. I'll be sure to post some photos in the evenings.

SB 01-19-2015 08:35 PM

Well, if itmeans anything, I have less snow than up there, and even with all our rain, we lost very little snow #1, and #2, we still have powder under the crusty top layer. So......hopefully the groomers work there majic up there. Again, they have unbelievably good groomer operators and equipment#1, and #2, thursday's and fridays 9usually Thursday's, are the best day to ride.

So...even if you have great riding - hopefully you do - remember to think about a return trip as that area is truly wonderful during normal winter conditions. Those towns are there for hunting and snowmobiling....they love to accomodate both.

Hope you enjoy your visit to our wonderfully 'outdoor' state.

Wave as you pass Exit 23 on Rte 93, and make sure you slow down and enjoy the steep Mtn Sides of Cannon Mtn in the 'Notch' a little ways before you turn off to go up to Colebrook. If you don't see the notch and say 'Holy Schit !', well, you where sleeping or in a white out.

Have a good trip !

PS: 'The Notch' im referring too is Franconia Notch. Part of my semi-local snowmobile area. A trail follows right along Rte 93 as it goes thru it.
Here's part of the 'Wow' part of the notch as seen on the highway. Way better in person....as is most photos....and as you get closer to it.

Damn SB, they never showed this type footage on the Bob Newhart Show. You live in a beautiful section there. Don't know why you guys b!tch about winter, at least you've got something to do. I've never even sat on a sled. There's a joke about a southern boy that went up north to work when he was young and when he retired he loaded up his sled and told his wife to get in the car they were going back home down south. His wife asked why do you have the sled and where will home be? He told her to get in the car and shut up. They traveled a few days until they were deep into Mississippi and had stopped for gas and one of the locals walked up and pointed to the sled and said "wtf is that thing you're hauling? The husband told the wife, "honey we're home".

Scagburner 01-20-2015 06:11 AM

Wow - Thats awsome! Hopefully it's daylight when we pass thru the Notch. You're off Exit 23, is that southern NH?

Once again, you have been a great help!:ernaehrung004:

Nope, dead nutz in the center of the state. Literally at the beginning of the White Mountains. I'm at the base of the Ossipee Mtn Range on Lake Winni. Snowmobile trail galore...when there is ridable snow.

Don't go by the Exit #'s on where we are at. Once you get up to our area there are lots of miles in between exits....so, it can take a while for the Exit #'s to increase (or decrease.)

Once you get to our Exit the scenery becomes a lot better to look at it.

And yes, the permanent "Caution: High Wind" signs are there for a reason. It's not always windy before and into the Notch, but when it is, hold the f*k on ! Lol.

===============================

Here's a vid I made when we went riding south of Pittsburgh 2 yrs ago when there was supposedly no snow. Yup, all reports said zero. The parking lot we left was all concrete and the trails coming to the lot where complete high grass. We rode up a 400yard goat path, plump right onto snow and for the next 100+miles of the same.

Trailers where pulling in and right out of this parking lot. I told them there was snow up this trail and then all the way up north, but they didn't believe. All CT plates. Felt bad for them, such a long trip not to believe a semi-local. LOL.

Always, always ask the locals for where the sno is at...and don't forget the people inside the stores as they may have been told by riders where the good snow is at.

How's this for - no snow ? :drink:

That's cooler than the other side of the pillow. How fast will your machine run?

SB 01-20-2015 11:38 AM

38 !!!!!!

And it's scary once past 35 !

SB 01-20-2015 11:48 AM

Here's a vid of me and the POS for a many mile wide open run down the lake. It was lunch time. Some vendors really pissed me off. I had to make a run where I didn't care if I broke myself or the machine. I just had to cool down !
No need for my customers to see my anger.

Look for the ice houses I past. See ya !

That is a screamin 38mph !!!!

Scagburner 01-20-2015 12:20 PM

The trail looked pretty bad around 7:40 & 8:25 in that first clip...Perhaps I should stay home...

That looks like the black/orange Pro R - always likes that color combo but I had the red/black 2011 before my 2014.

So much for the 45mph speed limit... I'm going to play it safe and keep it under 40mph...

SB 01-20-2015 01:26 PM

The trail video was on only about 2" hardpack with 2" powder on top. Those 100+ miles where all very good condition logging roads underneath. Good logging roads don't need much cover. Hopefully that's the type you'll be on. Ck with locals and NH HCS'rs best trails to be on. I haven't been to Colebrook / Pitts since seemingly forever so I'd be no good to remember what trail #'s to stay with. South of Errol, I could help.

Gladhe8er 01-21-2015 10:40 AM

I only have 1 mile on so far this year. Hoping to get some real riding done this weekend.

And it is god-awful, lol. I actually got punched in the face with a tit a couple years ago...and it was NOT a good tit. LMAO.

I'm still under 500 miles for the year...and we are struggling for snow anywhere within 5 hours of my house. St. Germain was 6 hours one way, and the snow only became good about an hour before we got there...then we got to experience the crowds of the Derby PLUS the families that always come up for 3 day weekends...Saturday was a total cluster. 32 degrees, bumps like crazy start to finish, got lost, one sled broke a secondary spring, almost got run off the trail by three azzholes (found them at a gas station and almost started swinging)...yet we still had a great time, lol.

Sunday was great...smooth trails (with the exception of the Land o Lakes area), no getting lost, light snow all day.

Staying home this weekend...I am sooooooo sick of driving! I've put over 3000 miles in the last 4 weekends on my truck!

Hope all went well up here !

Looks like you missed the big snow by a week.

If things shape up we could get 20" or more Mon night thru Wed AM and then maybe a foot on Friday.

We'll see if it really happens or not. We really need it !

I ride your area a lot. I come from Moult , over Squam Lake, into Plymouth and then up thru Rumney and etc.

Ride back, stop at Common Man Plymouth (it's right on the trails as you know) for some grub. Sometimes we just go to the Common Man Plymouth at night for grub and shoot back. Yeh, I have GPS to make the Squam Lake trek safe in the midle of the night.

That's cool...I grew up riding all those trails...I usually spent a lot of time over on newfound lake. It's not like up north though...you ride 100-150 miles around plymouth in a day you are beat. Those trails aren't like the snow highways north of the notch. Squam and the big lake can be tricky with all the coves to get lost in at night.

SB 01-25-2015 10:30 AM

I spent a night two different times out on Squam when I was young. We couldn't find the other trail...14 miles from one trailhead to the other.I live at the big lake, so, yes, been lost out in the frt of the house a few times. Easy to do at night ! Especially when snowing.

Vowd never again on squam...I got a color GPS as soon as they became available. Peole laughed at me back then....now fast forward, alot have them. Now it's no issue. I drop a 'breadcrumb' every 40 ft on the lakes.

Anyhow, our big ride is from here (I'm at b ase of Castle in the clouds) to N Conway, up to thru Evans Notch (ME) over to Gorham, over to Twin, down past CAnnon to Plymouth, back to Holderness, over Squam, and then back home. About 220 miles. Many of which are very twisty. Here and N Conway into ME, especially. It's an all day affair ! Great ride ! Sleep mot of the next day. LOL.

Anyway - Glad to see someone else that is/was from the area.

When we actually have snow riding out of my backyard from Clinton down to Madison is an awesome open fields ride when we actually have snow but more often than not I've found my fav spot is to drop at Highmarket or Constableville which is lower Tug Hill region. From there can shoot up to Montague or Flat Rock or also head east to Turin. Went this past weekend to Highmarket. The closest decent place with snow and well groomed trails north of Utica. Mine is a 2013 600 Indy and my GF rides my sons 2011 Shift 550F.

A good friend has a camp on Piseco Lake and the lake rides north to Speculator are awesome. Not a fan of their tight trails. I'll take open fields by me or the seasonal rodes on the Hill anyday.

I figured I should take a few minutes to post a winter update... We headed to New Hampshire for a four day trip a couple weeks ago and everything went great! The trails were way better than expected. Returned from there to finally have good snow here at home. Here are a couple photos from NH.

Between work and all the playing in the snow, I managed to negotiate a deal with DCNR to run their large groomer across and back a 10 mile stretch of Gamelands that the Snowmobile Club tries to maintain with our smaller machines. It's a high traffic trail that connects about everything here on our limited trail system. What an amazing job they have done with it! I never thought I would see this section flat in my lifetime!

I'm getting ready to head to the UP of Michigan this Thursday evening for the next 10 days. After that, I may be ready to get the boat back out!:D

Hey Scag...how did you like the UP?

We are all done for the year...low mileage for us....only got about 1400...BUT...most of our riding was in Wisconsin, where the trails are CRAZY tight and twisty...even the fastest riders would have a hard time averaging 30 mph. Rode last weekend...and it was in the 50s all week in the Northwoods...trails are toast. Just need to dump some StaBil in the sleds and put them away 'til next year!

Scagburner 03-14-2015 09:44 AM

Great trip - Thanks for asking! We covered ~ 1400 miles of the east side from Christmas to the Mackinac Island. We lost most of day due to an Apex throwing a stud thru the heat exchanger. Even though I told him the track was spent (9000 miles) before the trip, he insisted it would be fine... We towed him back, patched it with JB Weld and sent him up to Sault Ste Marie to trade it in on a new Viper. The trails were great all week due to lots of grooming, sub zero temperatures and low traffic. The Yoop is on the short list for next year!

We're done here too. I have over 2400 miles for the year, I just cleaned up the sled to drop it off at the dealer to snow check a new 2016 Axis Switchback 800.

I'll post some photos later today - it appears that my OSO membership expired out this morning. Lol
