Your sleds suck! Mine are better!

Hell...just look...one of yours is on fire, even!

MonkeySea2 01-15-2015 11:25 AM

I have a 2010 Yamaha Nitro 4-stroke and 2 old Yamaha Phazers. I ride mainly on our land or on the State trails at Thornhurst, PA. That is if we have snow. I'm looking to go to Old Forge this year.

JamesGang 01-15-2015 12:54 PM

Hey Gladhe8er We currently ride Cats and go out of Long Lake NY. Usually go down through the Old Forge system and sometimes out to the hill. Sometimes head north and go out through Cranberry Lake. Headin up tomorrow AM

Dude...your sleds don't even burn oil. You don't count. 2 strokes forever!

Scagburner 01-15-2015 04:31 PM

Still riding my old 2014 Pro R Switchback 800. I put a whopping 128 miles on it last year due to neck surgery.

This year isn't starting off any better! No snow here in PA...

Planning to head up to New Hampshire this Wednesday for a few days if conditions are ok. Going to Salamanca NY the first weekend in February for the Amsoil Snoncross plus riding in the mornings. After that I'm off to the UP of Michigan for 10 days at the end of February.

Bottom half of the state not good. Top half (not counting Central) good. The further North, the better.

Edit in: Anyone with a Polaris is a good man by me.

Thanks for the update! We're waiting to see what you get out of the storm Sunday into Monday. The plan is to head to the "North Woods" around Pittsburgh.

I'm a Polaris guy but have a couple Club owned SkiDon'ts cluttering up the garage. Lol

Again, top 1/3 rd is all good. Gorham to Colebrook to Pits. is all good. Staying to east side up there even better.

Hopefully accuweather is 'accu' on Sunday night.

This is our first trip to the “Yoop” so it’s usually a learning experience. We’re staying at the Pine Bluff Resort in Curtis. We should arrive on the 20th and depart on March 1st. We typically do 200 – 300 mile day loops and get back in time to support the local bars…

We will also do an overnight loop sometime during the trip. I would think it would be a run to the west side, grab some rooms, support some bars and head back to Curtis in the morning…

We have been riding Ontario and Maine for the last 15 years so we’re way overdue for a change of scenery.

Cool stuff to see...Pictured Rocks and Miner's Castle up in Munising, Tahquemenon Falls and Sault Ste. Marie (about the ONLY place we HAVEN'T been...hoping to get there this year!), Kitch-iti-kipi Hot Springs, and if you head west...Gwinn has an abandoned Air Force base that was staging for Cold War era B-52s...there are a bunch of planes there on display and you can pull your sled right up to them. Between Marquette and Munising, there is Lakenenland (http://lakenenland.com/), which is just about the coolest thing you will ever see on the side of a sled trail...if you can get there...DO IT!

Just to your north, the Crazy 8s trails around Grand Marais are spectacular...if you stop in the town of GM, take a pic by the giant pickle barrel.

Word of advice...DO NOT pass a gas station in the UP...even if you are at 1/2 tank...FILL IT.

Enjoy...it's beautiful up there.

Sommer - Thanks! This is great infromation and just what I need going into a new trail system! We will most likely hit all of your suggestions. I haven't seen Magic (Andy) since the 2008 Sunsation Rally.

No sweat dude. Andy is currently kicking it as the service manager for Performance Boat Center in Lake of the Ozarks...lucky dog!

If you need any more info, feel free to hit me up...but if by chance I don't know what you need, here is an EXCELLENT resource for you: http://www.johndee.com/ John Dee is a meteorologist that moved up to the Keeweenau Peninsula in the Yoop years ago, and he runs the site, providing detailed sledder-focused forecasts. The forum there will be able to help you with just about anything you could possibly ask.

Subjective. If I wanna go steep and deep, it's on a snowboard. Digging sleds out from being stuck is among the things I hate most in life, lol. I LOVE my trails, and Wisconsin's Northwoods and Da Yoop are hard to beat...between the two states, there is almost 50,000 miles of trail.

Our club and trail system are small compared to the guys up north but we do our best with a limited budget and smaller equipment. We currently have a 2009/Skandic WT and just took delivery of a 2015 Skandic WT. I've been busy getting it ready for the season and since I'm the president, I get to do all the work. Lol

I designed and built my own hitch for the sled that will accommodate either a bumper drag or gooseneck style drag. After that, I needed to rebuild the front end on one of the drags to be pulled either way. Everything seems to work well in the little bit of snow in my yard.

We also have two club members that own tracked Snocats and 6'-7' wide drags. They also groom the public land.

I had a Yamaha V-Max mountain sled when I lived out west. We used to hit serious deep powder in the Tahoe region. After getting stuck in powder up to my shoulders a few times, I decided I hated it. I much prefer a groomed trail!! You really need to know how to ride in the deep stuff and you have to have the right machine. It's very easy to sink and bury it!

SB - Whats going on up there?? We are all set to head up to Colebrook on Wednesday and seems that a lot of areas fell victim to the rain. What's the latest on the trails out of Clobrook and Northwoods areas?

Thanks,

SB 01-19-2015 10:19 AM

It rained like a Muthufker yestrday and last night.

Hit the ground and turned to ice. Inches deep.

I never put so much salt on my parking lot and it still has about an inch to go.

I had some lunatic friends ride from Twin to Errol yesterday. Said trails where real good, but then they had to turn around and come back in the downpours. Yuk !

So...........not much snow melted but I'd hate to guess on the conditions of the trails just a little further north.

I'd go to Hardcoresledder.com and go to NH section and see if anybody is reporting anything from today.

Wh were -F sat Morning. All day rain on Sunday from 10:00AM into evening.

Mother nature needs an attitude readjusment.

SB 01-19-2015 10:29 AM

LO, I just went over there to check and you have already gone there. Good man !

I'd stay tuned as supposedly there's supposed to be snow showers up there today. Ya never know what those can bring.

Good luck !

Smart thing to do is check webcams in the area for live weather conditions.

Here are the one's in Pittsburg, NH (just north of Colebrook)

http://www.nhtourguide.com/live_webcam_pittsburg_nh.htm

315duramax 01-19-2015 01:53 PM

went out riding this weekend with a few fellow OSO'rs this weekend up at tug hill. trails were terrible! washboards all day.

SB 01-19-2015 02:37 PM

During the week is the time in big ride places.

If week-ends only - get up early on Saturday ! And don't mind a bumpy ride back.

SB 01-19-2015 02:48 PM

Time lapse in Pittsburgh today from here:

That doesn't look too bad... Still want to make this trip happen if we can get some decent riding in. Getting some mixed reviews but crappy there is probably GREAT here! This is driving me crazy!

Welcome to my world !

======================

I live/work where I do so I can ride right from home and work. Worst case, trailer 1-2hrs to the hot snow parts. Some years, it doesn't happen !

======================

You'll like this story:
I was apparently born mentally retarded when it comes to wishing for snow.

I was young...say 7-8yrs old. I t was fall but still warm. I asked my mom "Mom, when will it snow?"

My mother says "Honey, it will snow when all the leaves come down."

I sat and thinked about it for a bit....and guess what I then did ?

I went out in the yard and beat every freakin leaf I could reach off the trees. I then got longer poles and attached my hockey stick to it and got the leaves further up.

I then proceeded to go over a neighbors house and start to do that to their trees/leaves until one of the adults came out and brought me home.

Ha ! True story !

Scagburner 01-19-2015 04:58 PM

Sounds perfectly logical to me! lol

SB 01-19-2015 05:47 PM

Hey Scagburner - there is an older guy that lives in Pittsburgh that is constantly going on NH section of HCS to give trail updates and weather conditions. His page is: http://www.hardcoresledder.com/forum...iperrider.html
He's been doing this for years. Pretty hardcore into riding up there.

His handle is oldviperrider .

Maybe give him a PM ?

BTW, those responding seem to think it will be fine.

BTW#2: up here you can have center of towns with pretty much nothing, but a few hundred yards into the woods or a few hundred feet of elevation and have tons of snow. Pittsburgh NH and Rangeley Me (it's near Pitts) are big time that way.

BTW#3: That area has the best of the best groomer operators. They can get stuff (snow conditions) to work big time.

SB 01-19-2015 05:50 PM

That didn't work. See next post.

SB 01-19-2015 06:14 PM

Go here: Look at webcam for the day. Yeh, whole day was recorder. So fast forward into afternoon.

Same website is there local forecaster.
